I’ve never come across anyone who loves Night In The Ruts as much as me. Very underrated, solid album, IMO.

In my opinion, Pump ranks as one of their absolute best. It’s strong and powerful from top to bottom. I place it higher than Done With Mirrors, the debut album and Draw The Line. But I love them all.

Permanent vacation is so underrated. Got some GREAT stuff on it. Hearts done time, magic touch, rag doll, dude looks like a lady, hangman jury, permanent vacation. I LOVE those tracks. pump also has some really good stuff. However, that’s where I draw the line, everything after pump I can do without

‘Rocks’ is one of the definitive slabs of hard rock of the ‘70s. When I listen to ‘Rocks’, so do the neighbors!

Pete, as a guitar player you may or may not know that the real story behind producer Douglas and the lp's Wings and Toys is that he brought on session players Wagner and Hunter for a lot more than just Train Kept A Rollin. They in fact played just about every solo on Wings and Toys. If your familiar with Wagner's tone and style you can hear it clearly on Spaced, SOS To Bad, Same Old Song, You See Me Crying, Round And Round, The fantastic solo at the end of No More No More and possibly even the Wah Wah solo on Nobody's Fault from Rocks. This decision was not confined to Aerosmith as Alice Cooper had Wagner and Hunter on some of Schools Out and ALL! of Billion Dollar Babies and ALL of Muscle Of Love even though Glen Buxton was still getting the credit. This was something done at the time to enhance an album when the guitar player/players were not quite of that caliber. Hunter and Wagner were absolutely incredible guitar players and were finally officially part of Cooper's band for Welcome To My Nightmare in 75.

In all fairness, Get a Grip was actually pretty good. Songs like Eat the Rich, Get a Grip, Crying and Shut up and Dance were all barn burners. I think Permanent Vacation also had its moments as did Pump. I saw them during the latter tour and they opened with The Other Side and that was high energy. I agree that their “newer” stuff doesn’t stack up to their classic catalogue, but it shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand either.

Aerosmith’s third LP, ”Toys in the Attic”, was released 45 years ago today.

I really think Rock and a Hard Place is a really underrated album. Jimmy Crespo really stepped up and made that a rocking album. He’s a great player in his own right.

Night In The Ruts....I've seen "sleeper" albums in my day, but this is the all time sleeper. I discovered it a few years ago and I could not believe my ears. Truly one of the great hard rock albums ever. It spent 40 years invisible to me because of the transition to into the 80's when we all started to listen to other music. It got buried AND they got buried. NB

I have discovered Aerosmith when "Pump" was released. I was 14 then and I first loved the late 80's and early 90's era. Now that I have grown up, I'm found of their 70's albums. Here's my ranking :

Hey Pete, I picked em in exactly the same order as you did. Stoked to see you giving the amazing Night in the Ruts the due it mightily deserves! For a band that was in that much chaos at the time they did that album, it’s absolutely mind boggling how they harnessed all that tension into such a bad assed swaggering collection.

I really enjoy this channel for the simple reason that I’ve checked out so much older music I’d never heard. Example - I grew up with Aerosmith starting from Get a Grip, and of course their older greatest hits album. I know I’m gonna check out their first bunch of albums now. Thanks Pete!
