  • With the water level low, some great exploring is available along the shoreline. The Fat Tad can almost keep up with Tilly's excitement. There is still plenty of fall color to enjoy. We spent the afternoon on the west side of Lake Marion.

Looks like a fat tire tadpole is the trike to have. You got a good workout from this ride. I like how Tillie was bugging you for a ride. Thanks for taking us along.

I've broken two sets of idler wheels (referring to the log crossing); saving up to build a stronger solution because at 75 bucks each the OEM ones just aren't cutting it on logs, rocks, etc. I guess a fat tad skidplate would be something a lot of people would use because then you could simply go over obstacles without breaking the drivetrain off. I've also broken two derailleurs and the chain twice as well (I discovered quickly that sand is immediately no good for a chain drive); if I can fit a jackshaft/skidplate assembly where the idler pulley currently mounts, then it will make the belt conversion a lot easier to build. I think there are a lot of people who would do a belt upgrade if it was simple and used common parts, like two standard belts instead of a goofy super long one (Gates already makes belt/pulley/cog sets for tandem bikes). There are several companies that make bottom bracket (the "front" bracket on a bent tad) gear assemblies to get ride of your chain cassette on the back and lighten up your unsprung mass at the same time. 🙂
    thanks for the videos!

I do have sealed ball bearings on the rear jockey wheels which helps with the grit. My worst enemy is the winter salt spray on the roads around here. When winter does arrive, the chain gets a good coating of wet motorcycle chain wax. I stay off the roads as much as possible, and go very slow when crossing them to avoid the spray. (Very corrosive!)
I find if you are able to roll over the log with the front wheels it will clear the center idler. If not, I have get up and lift it over.
I'm running T-cycle Elite idler. They run and run, but one log/ rock strike will take it out.
      Thanks for your comments!

I grew up in lakeville and now live in rosemount . I walk my two dogs with my trike just like that . I'm planning on getting a new E assist ice trike soon . Would like to ride with you and your little girl some time . I have a trident titan now .

You should have looked at the date code on the tire

I really did think of that but it was too mucky to get to it.

Do you think carrying about 50foot of heavy duty string or thin rope would have helped.
Leaving the Trike on the shore and walking and snaking the rope over and threw the woods until you were on the other side and pull the Trike to you or was it too deep? Watching you struggle made me hurt. Lol

Yes, that would have worked! 100ft. of 20# test cord. The steering centering shock will keep it going in a straight line. Or, how about a radio control on the motor throttle and have it drive across on its own? (That'd be sketchy)
      Thanks for your comments!
