Im right now decorating for Halloween 🎃 and I have been purging my 9 year old son toy box getting him sensory toy's and toy car's and toy trucks and I'm almost done with my 8 year old Christmas and my adult daughters and my teenage granddaughters get money
My 4 year old, who reminds me a LOT of Lex, is an eloper. We just got in our Alert Me Band ID bracelet. I'm really excited about it. I plan to put the door alarms on and we have chain locks way up high on all our doors. Also, he sleeps with us, locked in our room. Right there with you sister!
I have a 4 year old runner too, just a heads up. Mine climbs to undo the chains 😉 chairs stacking toys whatever. We had to get a double sided deadbolt, that you open with a key to get out and in. Just wanted to give you a heads up
Noah melts my heart when he talks about Minecraft. Makes me want to try! My son is 4.5 with level 2 Autism and we had no choice but to put one of those chain locks on the outside of his bedroom door. He learned to unlock the kitchen door and front door both leading outside and it scared the heck out of me. Definitely gives my husband and I peace of mind. Getting a security system and video monitors very soon!! Baby No. 2, girl, is arriving in 7 weeks or less, so it’s been our top priority. Thank you for all of your amazing information 💛💛💛💛
I have autism and I now realize that me running out of the house (mostly as a teen when my mom didn’t have as much control) when I got overwhelmed was probably elopement. It was really hard to control the feeling, the need to go and leave and run. I wasn’t diagnosed until 27/28- I’m 29 now - so I can’t imagine the stress my mom must have experienced all those years.
Thank you for showing the elopement ideas. My son is almost 2 with level 3 autism and tries to unlock the doors by hand or with keys. Smart little booger lol I have been looking for more ways to keep him safe! Happy you guys are feeling better.
Glad you made this video. My 17 month old has autism, I didn’t even know elopement is something I have to watch out for. Thanks for bringing awareness to this.
My brother isn’t diagnosed with autism (although I’m almost certain he is ND in some way, most likely autism or ADHD) but he definitely used to be an eloper. Especially from the car, most often after a meltdown while driving. Once he got out of the car near an intersection (the car was going very slow because he had taken his seatbelt off) and my mom had to chase him down. A kind person saw and thought it was an abuse or kidnapping situation and called the police, who showed up at our door quickly. All was ok in the end, but this happened after a long car trip. Not a good way to end it lol. We had to keep the child locks on in the car until he was about 9. I, on the other hand, was never much of an eloper as far as I know despite being diagnosed with autism. I remember a few times that would count where I just sort of left because it didn’t occur to me to tell anyone I was leaving. I had strict rules about how far I was allowed to go from the house, which worked pretty well for me given that I’m pretty stuck on rules.
My nephew he’s 13 now but when he was a little kid it used to scare me so much because he would just run up to people and talk to them and we had to remind him a lot that its not safe to go with strangers or talk to people you do not know, thankfully he outgrew it and he is such an amazing kid, so smart but the therapies and new school have been a huge help for him.
My specialist orthopaedic surgeon was a bit of a jerk about my special needs but my broken leg & shattered ankle healed beautifully despite my inability to follow up with physiotherapy during quarantine. Edit: Those strips that you use to hang pictures without marking the wall could be attached to those door alarm units so you can put them on Hotel doors while travelling. Also use them if you’re renting & the Landlord won’t let you put holes in the wall
Thank you for this! I had asked for help from my child’s therapist and coordinators and they were honest in that they weren’t sure what to use. The stress is soo much so this video is a great resource!
I tried to elope once at 18. This was before my autism diagnosis. I was getting upset because it was Christmas time and everyone was being so loud and obnoxious with a game. I told them all to shut up and got in trouble. I decided I wanted to go for a walk and be alone so I left. My mom and my aunt came after me and told me to get back in the house. I hid in the bedroom for an hour so I could calm down. But that night I knew something wasn’t right with me. That’s when I started doing research on autism in girls. I got my diagnosis a couple years later.
Thank you for this video. I had my first terrifying experience of my 2.7 year old son eloping a few months ago. We live on the ground floor in a flat on busy road and he got out the window and was running up the street, metres away from cars. He has no concept of danger. I've developed some form of OCD from that. We have chains and locks now and I have a ritual where I need to check everything multiple times before bed otherwise I wouldn't sleep :(
Do you know how happy i am to find another person house looking like mine. Our doors look like forth knox. People always looking at it like we are crazy. I have 3 kids asd/adhd
I hope you enjoy your Gaza’s fireplace as much as we enjoy ours. We had electric heat only! Since we put in our gas fireplace, we don’t even turn on our electric heat. We are saving so much money!
We did that, she figured out how to unlock the door , then she figured out how to climb to reach the keys where I had moved them to and she kept getting out , also I’m always worried I’ll forget to lock the door and she’ll take the opportunity to go exploring and then it’s just a few steps and she’s on the main super busy road and she just loves to run in to roads
I feel so dumb 😪 about asking the wrong question 😕 for Q&A. I struggle with "running off" which is what me parents call it wen really it happens and i dont remeber it but its hard to balance my independence with my parents keepin me safe 🤦♀️🙄💙
I’m sorry I really wasn’t attacking u. I really enjoy your program. It’s very real & informative. You have way to much on your plate. I just was asking u to please say it correctly because you are a amazing mom & person. So when you say xcape or whatever u do sound silly. Again I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you. Please forgive me. I really do watch ur show & enjoy you & your beautiful family.
You should do a new room tour of Noah’s room and Liam and Penelope‘s room I love your videos so much LIAM and Lex are so cute and Penelope and Noah is so smart and intelligent and Noah has lots to say I love your whole family
Advice for this upcoming winter don't walk barefoot. I learned the hard way I broke mine a couple years ago and to this day I can't walk barefoot because at night I get really painful foot cramps. also, I tend to wear fluffy socks during winter because the cold also causes cramping.
Oh no, is Lex still feeling bad? He looks so pale and miserable. Poor little bug. I hope you‘ll all feel better soon! And wow, Nellie‘s so good at eating now! She has progressed so so much!
One time my teacher told us a story when she was working in a retail store that the fire alarm suddenly went off and she told the customers who were on there line to leave the store but the customers refused to and still wanted to sop
We are having this issue with my 6 year old. She’s just like Lex, cognitively she’s very fit and smart, but she has very very low danger awareness. She’s waking between 3-5 am and trying to escape.
The only thing that concerns me with things u put on their clothes is.. many kidnappers know to change all their clothes and change the kids haircut sometimes by shaving their heads or from long hair to short hair. Then if ur child pass by u would not even notice it because their clothes and appearances have been changed. Just the thought of my child going missing scares me. Of course having a GPS is still better than nothing... but its sad that kidnappers ar also super smart n crafty too. Good for u tho for having all of these in place.
We live in an apartment complex. When we walk to the mail box I can get my son (20 mo tha old) to hold my hand but he likes to run around In a big grass area... yesterday he was running looking at the moon (in the grass area) & ran right off the curb into the road. Luckily there wasn't a car coming & he didn't get hurt. My question is what would you recommend to keep him safe while running in the grass area? Would it just be wise to put a backpack leash on him so I can stop him in time from running into danger or do you know of another way or device that I can keep him safe but still allow him to run freely?? No matter how much we go outside he still does this.
I think a backpack leash would be the best solution in this scenario. Angelsense is a great GPS device for special needs individuals but won't fix the traffic issue.
I'm going to get the door alarms from amazon because we already changed the lock on the front door to the key only my son is a houdini too and its scary. thanks this gives me some ideas. Its good to think ahead to keep them safe.
Have you considered a safe bed for Liam and Lex? Would you be able to get assistance for funding them? That way they could share a room and be safe at night.
Can you explain the difference between elopement and what kids typically do? Because if I didn't hold onto mine I'm certain he'd see a "squirrel" and make a run for it. He'd stop and come back when I holler for him but still. He'd run off. He's almost 4.
At almost 4, a child should understand to walk by you and not wander off. Most kids do this by 2. Yes if a child sees something exciting they would go to it without really caring but the difference is that they just run with not really going towards anything
A lot of patience. We don’t discipline for things they do that they have no idea that is wrong. So we will do walks (and ABA does walks). If they stay by us, they get a treat. We do have a lot of talks with Lex (4 year old) about why he needs to stay by us but like if you try disciplining a child for something they don’t understand they won’t understand why they’re even in trouble so if they cant understand the consequences then you get them to at least understand if they stay close by you, they get good things.

We have a door alarm because I have PTSD and run when overwhelmed or having a night terror

Thanks for the advice. I babysit a 6 year old with behavioral issues and ran away from me the other day. It was not a good situation at all!

I did elopement when i was kid/teen, espicially when i was overwhelmed, bullied, where my teachers had to come get me
Great video, so helpful for many other family’s .Thank You.🙂🙂🙂🙂👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼💙💙💙💖💖💖
Elopement is scary. Even I'm autistic and don't have these issues I feel for you. Thank you and stay away
I need to do a door lock alarm for my kiddo. She'll learn how to open the door soon. Street safety is non existent still.

We had that same fire alarm in my high school and it was so ear piercing!

What do you use for window locks? If you use them. Anybody can answer. Looking for good ones. Thank you
Honestly elopement is one of the scariest aspects of (some) asd kids for me :/
I may have missed where you said you got your fireplace from?...
Home Depot

We get one later this month :)

Are you concerned that lex might take off the clothing item with the gps on it?
He won’t do that once he’s in public. So at home he would but he never tries to remove clothing in public
♥️♥️♥️♥️
Most kidnappigs are actually done by relatives.
Most, not all so as a parent it’s still a scary thought.
@@OurLANDingCrew8 :) True
Also by divorced parents in a custody dispute.
Most people die in the woods from exposure to the elements. That does not mean you don't prepare for a bear attack. which is very rare
Do you discipline when they do these things? How do show them it's not appropriate
