    about the 米国 = America part, i believe the explanation in the video is correct but there’s an explanation which is more well known-ish here in japan which says that it’s taken from the old way to write America which is 亜米利加(literally just a combination of kanjis that reads “Amerika”), but the first kanji (亜) is already used for the spelling of Asia(亜細亜) so they went for the 2nd kanji, 米 and it turned into 米国

    With Genbaneko, the worker cat meme you've referenced, you actually got his origin backwards ^^;;
    He was originally a meme that formed as a variation of the "phone cat" meme, and evolved into primarily depicting workplace incidents. He became so well known as the "workplace incident cat," that he ended up being co-opted as the mascot for the Japanese equivalent of OSHA, and is used to depict examples of what not to do! So rather than a mascot that became a meme, he was a meme that became a mascot!

    Great video as usual. Your friend’s story reminds me of something similar that happened to me a few years ago.
    Got a visit from a Jehovah’s Witness couple, who wanted to discuss God and stuff. I invited them in to play Mario Party and said if they beat me, I’d attend their group meeting. We talked a lot about religion (I’m agnostic). It was a rather pleasant conversation, even if I didn’t agree with all their views. I fortunately came first and didn’t have to follow through with my gamble.
    They came only once again to give me chocolate and coffee to say thanks for the chat and the game. It was pretty wholesome.
    Also the famous 牛丼 guy makes me a little sad because I lived at Yoshinoya for like a year when I wasn’t good at cooking and I didn’t get any recognition, ha ha.

    Correction - Chinese words are not abbreviate. It is the other way round - other languages used phonetic to say the names of the countries in Chinese. Thus it is longer. 米国 is also not a Japanese only thing. In Chinese dialect Teochew - USA is pronounced as Mi Gou ( phonetic ). The Mi is pronounced the same way as you would pronounce the Chinese word 米 which mean rice.

    America:亜米利加(アメリカamerika)→米国(beikoku)
    France:仏蘭西(フランスfuransu)→仏国(fukkoku)
    UK:英吉利(イギリスigirisu)→英国(eikoku)
    Germany:独逸(ドイツdoitsu)→独国(dokkoku)
    Russia:露西亜(ロシアroshia)→露国(rokoku)

    I got my friend to watch Welcome To The NHK years ago and after he finished watching it, an old class mate of his asked to meet him at a place, it turns out it was exactly a Multi Leveling Marketing Scheme / Pyramid Scheme. I told my friend to be cautious before he went and jokingly said "Hopefully it's not a Pyramid Scheme". Afterwards I tell him that it was definitely a Pyramid scheme and that NHK was right.

    8:07 We Japanese certainly sometimes use kanji to denote the name of a country. However, this is not an imitation of the Chinese naming system, but simply an adaptation of the sounds of the Chinese characters. Therefore, the kanji used are completely different.
    German=独逸 Doitsu(独国 どくこく Dokukoku)
    England=英吉利 Egerisu(英国 えいこく Eikoku)
    France=仏蘭西 Furansu(仏国 ふつこく Futukoku)
    America=亜米利加 Amerika(米国 べいこく Beikoku)
    Canada=加奈陀 Kanada(加国 かこく Kakoku)
    Russia=露西亜 Roshia(露国 ろこく Rokoku)

      @@theKobus In Chinese, all the western country names that has meaning, are made auspicious when possible. France 法國 = Law Country, Germany 德國 = Righteous Country, England 英國 = Hero Country, USA 美國 = Beautiful Country (the 米國 is also still correct, but archaic). There are a lot that is just to immitate the sound, which characters don't have meaning - like Canada 加拿大 (add bigger take?), Portugal 葡萄牙 (grape tooth), Spain 西班牙 (regular western tooth?). But the original pronounciation (Middle Chinese) resembles the Japanese, Cantonese, Hokkien, and Korean more than the modern Mandarin Chinese.

    8:48 正確には"米"の"bei"の発音を採用したのではなく別の読み方である"me"を採用しています
    A"me"ricaの"me"です。
    ちなみになぜ"A"を採用しなかったのかというと、それを採用した場合その漢字は"亞"になり日本人の感覚からするとかなり禍々しい雰囲気となるからという説と、日本語と比べ英語は単語の最初の発音が弱い傾向にあるため日本人がAを聞き取れなかったと言う説があります。
    実際に、日本にはアメリカ人に対する差別用語として"メリケン(Meriken)"というものが存在するのでおそらく後者が正しいです
