Kujan says, "Whoever's sleeping is your man. You see, if you're guilty, you know you're caught, you get some rest, you let your guard down". In the lock up scene with them all in the cell.Hockney is laying down getting rest. Later we find out he hijacked the truck of gun parts.
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. Seen it countless times and I've NEVER made that connection before.. Thank you for pointing that out!
Fuck I never noticed that. Then again, he's not asleep, he's just trying to. Also, Kujan was talking about a murderer, but hijacker could also apply.
What's fun when you really start thinking about this movie is how it ALL unravels the more you think about it. For instance, at the end, you mentioned how Verbal lured Keaton in with the "They won't take me [for this job] if you don't come along," how Verbal was setting up Keaton to be the fall guy, and how Keaton was trying to go straight and just live his life. But remember: All of those moments are part of Verbal's story. None of that might be what happened. They could've been working together long before that. Or never before that. Or Verbal might've been working with Hockney or McManus. Keaton could've been still just as much of a dick as he ever was. His lawyer gf could've been corrupt right along with him. We don't know ANYTHING about any of the characters or anything that actually happened except that this group of guys were together on the boat and now they're all dead, including the guy who ratted on Keyser Soze (which we only know is true because the cops had Soze's name on the list of people Arturro named and that all happened outside of Verbal's narration). All the hows and whys are left in the dark because all we have to go by is Verbal's unreliable narration.
The only things we know for sure outside of the fact that these people all died on the boat are the few things the cops find in their own files. Basically, the stuff the cops already knew. E.g. Keaton's past, Soze's name appearing on a list of 50 people named by Arturro, that the burned guy saw Verbal and named him as Keyser Soze (though, if he'd never seen Keyser Soze before, he may have just assumed Verbal was Soze because Arturro was hiding from Soze and the burned guy saw Verbal shooting up the boat), that NY's Finest Taxi service was hit (though they never caught who did it, so Verbal may have just been claiming credit for it as part of his story even if it wasn't them), and that a conman named Verbal Kint with a picture matching Kevin Spacey had been arrested once before. Everything else is us connecting dots that Verbal laid out for us to connect (and often forgetting they could be fake because we see these moments onscreen and movie language tells us that this means they happened).
Even better: We don't even know if "Verbal" was Keyser Soze or just somebody who worked for Keyser Soze. Or maybe he's not even related to Keyser Soze at all, but just a conman who used the name and reputation to scare people into working a job for him. Maybe "Kobayashi" in the car is the real Keyser Soze. Maybe they were both just conmen using Keyser Soze's name. Does "Kobayashi" even have an accent? We don't hear him talk in the car at the end. And, keeping the mystery alive despite what people think, consider this: In the end credits, Kevin Spacey is credited as "Verbal," not as "Keyser Soze." Everyone who sees it assumes he is -- me included, the first time I saw it -- but it's never verified.
A lot of movies have ambiguous endings. This is one of the few movies where the entire movie is ambiguous.
I like to think it was a mixture of truth and fiction.
You know verbal is soze because of the sketch but that’s all you know at the end.
The sketch was of Verbal, and he was the person Kovash saw "killing many men" on the boat. So he *is* Soze.

Oh wow...fantastic movie choice!!. What a classic this is. This one and "Basic" with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson are 2 of the those movies that left a mark in me.
"Keyser Soze" is a name for some reason I remember very often.
You guys caught the main clue to figuring it out. When Verbal says they are speaking Hungarian. You guys asked "how did he know that?" Now you know. Lol
I was going to point that out until I saw your comment. Well done.
A fun fact about this movie. None of the actors except Kevin Spacey knew he was Keyser Soze. Gabrielle Byrne got so mad at the screening when he found out it wasn’t him that he left the theater.
There were also clues that Verbal was Keyser. He had the gold lighter they gave him back after releasing him. When Keyser pissed on the flame it was thick like Verbal said he gets when he’s dehydrated. Verbal also said he was hiding behind the ropes when Keyser was killing the rest but the camera zooms in on the ropes and there’s never anyone there, in the opening scene or the end.
Singer said that it was the other way around. He said it was hard to get Byrne to do the inserts of him as Soze because he knew he wasn't Soze and didn't understand why they were shooting it that way. Singer said he had to just tell him that he was a big MILLER'S CROSSING fan.
Don't know if you noticed it or not, but the cop who was smoking in the hospital, was played by Giancarlo Esposito, who went on the play Gustavo Frimg in Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul. Going back and watching older 80s & 90s movies and he shows up EVERYWHERE.
The scene where McManus gets hit with the cigarette actually happened by accident. It wasn’t supposed to hit him when redfoot flicked it towards him. Ouch!
Also, I remember they had to cut it quick because the actor who plays Redfoot is actually a REALLY nice guy and immediately ran over to him to make sure he's ok and apologize immensely!

The way Verbal smokes his cigarette is how someone from Eastern Europe would smoke a cigarette while wearing mittens…….it is very cold in Eastern Europe.
"It all makes sense when you look at it right. You gotta, like stand back from it, you know?"
He maybe an unreliable narrator, but I tend to believe most of Verbal's story. He changed the names to protect himself, but on a whole, I don't think he lied much for two reasons. The first is that Verbal is a narcissist. I think he wanted to take credit for the ship job, or rather, he wanted Soze to take the credit. He could have worn a mask, but he didn't expect to leave any survivors, and he wanted his victims to see him, another chapter in the legend of Keyser Soze. Second reason: the cops were so obsessed with Keeton, that no matter what he told them, they wanted to believe that Keeton was behind it all. At least, as far as Dave Kujan was concerned.
The lawyer doesn't mention verbals name either when he names everyone in the room when he talks about the reason why they owe keyser soze he just says it was a cripple that tricked one of his least intelligent contacts..
Also right at the beginning, they focus in on the crates and rope, and there is nobody there, but in Verbal's account that is where he was hiding. as well, when Verbal picks up his stuff right at the end, one of the items is a gold lighter, the same one you see Keyser light the cigarette with right at the start.
Great reaction! I clicked on this so fast when I saw you were reacting to Usual Suspects ^.^ I was worried you'd catch on to things earlier, with how good you folks (especially Madison) are at figuring things out in movies. Glad this one made the list.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, they kept laughing during the line up scene because Del Toro (Fenster) kept farting during the take. Rumor is that Singer (Director) had convinced every actor that they were Soze. Bryne was so upset that he walked outta the premiere.
Del Toro was the only one who knew that his character was dying for sure, so he hammed it up with the really exaggerated Cajun accent.
The cigarette flick was real, it was supposed to be off his chest, but it missed.
Also, what i picked up later on, we saw Verbal kill Sol Berg, i doubt he told the cops that, but we saw it. So at the end when he says
"How do you shoot the devil in the back, what if you miss?" We should have known something was fishy about him.
I mean, shooting a stationary target that is sitting in a parked car is a bit different than shooting a super villain from 100 feet away with a handgun, at the tail end of a massacre. Those scenarios are night and day.
I've noticed that a lot of ppl seem to find non existent clues in this movie. Like the gold lighter. Ppl comment about Kaiser Soze having a gold lighter at the beginning of the movie and then Verbal gets a gold lighter returned to him by the cops at the end but 3 of the 5 main characters have gold lighters in this movie.
I'm not saying any of this as an insult or criticism. People view movies in a very different way now because of movies like this. Back when this first came out, people just accepted what they were shown on screen because this sort of twist was unheard of. No one was looking for a twist that involved an unreliable narrator or criminal mastermind playing possum because it had never been done before... at least not this well. But movies like this and Fight Club sparked a ton of creative twists in future movies.
You watch enough movies with clever twists and you start looking for them. Especially if you are watching a crime thriller sort of movie.

I haven't seen a MAC React video pop up on my feed in quite some time, and when one does...it's an absolute banger like this? My favorite movie of all time. Have seen this so many times. 36:12 - good catch. There's also a quick scene where verbal/Keyser is smirking when he can tell his story is working, which goes away real quick when the Agent comes back in front of him.
Yeah, I like these two but rarely watch.
Kevin spacey's character was kaiser sose, thats how he got away with so much, he acted like a cripple so people underestimated him, he just had people doing stuff for himself as sose, its why thefes all these myths & why he leaves 1 alive.
I do believe he told the truth with the Turkey story, that's why he knew the people on the ship spoke Hungarian, as you commented yourself. That was because of Turkey he knew the language.
How did he know it was Hungarian? That's the Number One clue, and you got it! Kint, btw, is Hungarian for "outside." The clues are linguistic, and "Verbal" is Keyser.

Top 5 ending ever. Everybody like “saw it coming”. No shit, you’ve seen meme’s for the last 20 years and now you know?
Lol. Like guessing the end of Fight Club 25 years later. Anyone who's seen Mr Robot might figure it out because they literally borrowed the main plot.
There have been so many shows and movies that have referenced Usual Suspects in some way. Sometimes they describe someone that is a secret criminal mastermind as being like "Kaiser Soze". I remember a TV show even making a joke where the main character says, "What are you doing later.... hanging out at the video store and telling people that Kevin Spacey is Kaiser Soze". Even Family guy did a funny cut scene that parodies the ending with Verbal going from a limp to a regular walk.
In fairness tho, I don't think people realize that they have absorbed all the memes and references. Some of these classic 90s movies also created a template for twist endings that have been done to death over the last 30 years. You watch enough movies with clever twists, you start watching differently.

The Keyser Soze exists, as the Hungarian who gave the description knew and named him. The question is who was Verbal really? Is he a super genius who created the Keyser Soze story and wore it as a character or just create the myth as a cover and we never really know who he is?
You picked up on something I've missed on previous viewings when you asked how Verbal knew it was hungarian...
Also the story of Keyser killing his family then going after the mobsters and their families is actually the only truthful thing Verbal aka Keyser said.
How is it true?
From my understanding Soze means "to talk too much and cause confusion."

We can’t take any part of his story at face value. Only Soze knows what went down. Maybe he just changed some names but other than the NY Finest Taxi job nothing can be verified.
Even the NY's Finest Taxi job could just be something Verbal/Soze read about in the newspaper and wove into the story. Since they never caught whoever did it, he could easily claim it was them who pulled that job and there's no way to verify that. We know literally nothing about what these people did, how they got involved with the job/each other, etc. The only part we know for sure is that they were on the boat together, and now they're dead. Outside of that, it's all unreliable narration from "Verbal." I mean, hell, Edie might've been a shady lawyer doing dirty deals with her ex-cop bf who was still doing crimes. We have no way of knowing.
The movie were the ending is the best part.
Dear Madison and Christian, please watch Dead Alive (Braindead) 1992. It’s the goriest zombie horror comedy movie ever. It was made by Peter Jackson who later made "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Hobbit". It's kinda like "Evil Dead II" but made in New Zealand.

it really changed the grammar of films and what an unreliable narrator was.
anyone watching this long after its release can never get as pulled in by the twist as when it first dropped.

Unreliable narrators are always lovely.
When all is said and done, and putting aside everything Verbal said (unreliable narrator,)Keyser Söze failed. The goal was to conceal his identity by taking out a witness, but, in the end, the cops had his fingerprints and mug shots, not just an artist's rendering.
Beware the unreliable narrator...
