Alright, so you answered my question from your last video. You have experience.
How much RAM do you expect to install on that board? Just wondering what you do with something like that.
You said you use it as as server, but is it just for your home, or do you allow others to use it as a hub?
I have an older computer I got a hold of, its an original Skylake that runs just four sticks of DDR3 2400 memory.
The cpu is locked. Its a four core part, but it is something to tinker with. I have to check, but I don't think it is hyper threaded.
It was cheap and if I break it, I break it.
I don't expect it to be very easy for me to learn very much upfront.
Your last video helped my take the plunge.

128 GB of ram is more than enough for the intended purpose of running zfs filesystem and perhaps a couple virtual machine instances with qemu. if i ever wanted to add more im not certain what i would realistically use it for. While the old motherboard was dead the "server" has been running on 32GB of ram using an i5-6600k skylake which is just barely enough ram to run an 80TB raidz2 zfs storage pool without using ton of swap virtual memory, powerful but unfortunately overheats significantly faster than the xeon server cpu's and only has 4 cpu cores which is enough at a bare minimum to run plex server transcoding on linux.
This server build was pretty much what i felt was a great compromise between new enough hardware to still be usable yet not extremely expensive yet still have gobs of cpu thread capability, uefi bios support and more than adequate system resource potential for a homelab nas server that's also silent enough to live beside the family entertainment center.
I have that system when fully assembled in a Fractal Design XL R2 full tower with 12 to 14 hard drives some of them ssd's and around 84 TB of disk space.
Most of what i learned was due to immersing myself learning to use and learning from Gentoo Linux.

may I ask how you solve your problem ? is there no OS in that hard drive ? I encounter the same problem that the drive is not recognized nor I can install with usb disk

How did you manage to run 2690v2 on it? What version of BIOS?

I just updated to the most recent ipmi and bios firmwares available from supermicro. I made sure to by a motherboard revision from ebay that supported ivy bridge xeons. The motherboard revision must be rev 1.20 not 1.10
When in doubt trust unix surplus!

You have any advice on further reading?
I don't really know which authors to go with.

linuxjourney.com is pretty decent for online study material. Regarding specific authors none that i'm aware of. I mostly read wiki guides such as arch linux wiki for technical reference regarding whatever subject i'm wanting to learn or study. mostly Linux related.
Chris Titus Tech is pretty good for TH-cam however and i've more recently been lurking around his discord linux-help chat

Hi having a problem with a very similar board X9DRi-LN4F+ it
came with password and just can't find how to clear it, think I have tried almost anything I have found, any suggestions?

there's two config menus on these boards. the bios and ipmi. do you know which has a password?
To update the bios properly using the java ipmi is required but if the bios or ipmi are very old versions those firmware versions will not support modern java jvm's. that java version compatibility issue may be a source of the problem your encountering.
Also last time I attempted to access the ipmi interface only firefox remained as a modern browser option capable of using java jre or jdk in a browser. try downloading and studying the motherboard manual and see if there's a jumper to reset either the ipmi or bios or cmos.
If your still stuck perhaps another server hardware tech youtuber named art of server could offer some advice.

@@xartintv so far can't get into the bios one and can't get the usb to boot to log into the ipmi one :( tried to clear the cmos using the clear cmos contact pins removed the battery, kept a jumper on the power jumper for more than two hours with everything disconnected , so far nothing seems to work with the bios pass

@@parsec3d I recall there was a github project I located to unlock something with the ipmi firmware but what that project offered may be unrelated to what you require or are seeking. Here's the url github.com/bwachter/supermicro-ipmi-key
Also iirc the ipmi as best as i recall was more capable at many things and only accessible via ethernet from a different pc on the same network. the ipmi firmware with these server boards is lord of the roost so to speak.
      th-cam.com/video/piCA2clWaxo/w-d-xo.html
If your unable to remove the password, access the ipmi at all or alter selecting the boot options to boot from a usb stick perhaps you might need to consider returning the motherboard to whomever you purchased it from or claim it as faulty hardware. I'm not aware if the bios password can be removed but supermicro may be able to offer some advice.

@@xartintv I still have fait the seller already approved me to do an RMA but sending it back would be more expensive than getting a new one, will see if I find a solution before the weekend.

It seems from reading the crawls in the TH-cam comments that Linux is the go to system for anyone that wants to get a bit more serious about software. I've read where its more "unlocked" than Windows? It also is supposed to come with less bloatware. Hell, its not till very recently that I ever heard the term bloatware, so you know that I am very much a neophyte. No idea most of the time.
I always did like the look if a board like yours that had two CPU slots verses just one. I kind of like the idea, but would have doubts as to my being able to make it work.
You planning on putting two CPU's in? I admit I like the idea of two CPU's just because of two.
I understand that the newest models have many many cores and threads, however Thread Ripper and the like are way out of my price range, once you build the whole system.
Using older models to get a lot of the same performance makes sense. As long as the price difference could justify it.
My little paycheck makes ever owning the latest and greatest a non starter. Even then I doubt I would pull the trigger, as I have never had much money and might feel bad about spending so much on a computer, being that I do not use one for a living. Its just a hobby for me.
That RAM would be plenty for me. I only recently went to 32 on two sticks when the prices finally came back down enough. I ran 16 till then.
I am not picking at any of the age of your components. To me it would be like souping up a slightly older model car to run with some of the best of the new.
The idea really does appeal to me. I don't know enough about the subject to really say, but like anything else, when you can do things like your doing and make the software work then your own your way.
I've sat on the sidelines for so long, but it is expensive, and its like drinking from a fire hose. So much information out there.
It can get to be kind of discouraging.
Well anyway thanks for answering. I think I will keep up with whatever your doing with yours as a guide for what I should do.
I want to get there myself someday.
I will also go and find those other sources of information that you handed me. Good luck.
