Excellent video even though it is dated. The basics have not changed - skating maneuverability is still more important than pure speed. Being able to change directions and get into position to give or receive a pass is what sets good hockey players apart from weaker players. Americans know how to play hockey extremely well at all levels. I'm a Canadian hockey player. Thanks for posting this video!!
Thanks Suds..... I have a stackful of old USA hockey videos,,,, besides this one,,, and the Skills for Defensemen is only clips of the 2 part series....I've already promised Divenstrike this complete video. Let me know... I also have "Passing and Receiving", "Shooting" Goaltending videos 1 and 2,,,, "Strength training for hockey" and a great one done with Roger Nielson with Borque, Denis Savard, Ron Francis, Greg Millen, Doug Wilson, and Mike Gartner. (one of my favorite skaters).
Rule 55 - Hooking 55.1 Hooking - Hooking is the act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player or goalkeeper to restrain an opponent. When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.
Although some of the terminology and technique is somewhat dated in this older USA Hockey video...many ideas comcepts are good and create some good discussions on 1vs1's.
@blu3sman8 I agree with NHL2nite. Forwards = crossover. Backwards = crossunder. Either way, its just language. Call it something German, who cares. These guys demonstrate good techniques to add to the skating arsenal. Plus, this video is ancient. The names might change, but the skating techniques are still as important as they were 25 years ago.
@yachtzzuuup I dont disagree with you necessarily on the step out. You are fully commited once you do that. All posters need to remember this is an educational video right or wrong. There is no perfect way to do anything. I think they were simply demonstrating some techniques that can be applied both from a skating standpoint and a strategy standpoint, and let you decide which is best to employ in a game situation. Not attacking you Yachtzzupp,,,USA hockey made this vid... not me....
Nahh, I studied world history last year, mon ami. Learned about Russia, Germany, how France had to pull out of Vietnam, how America came to their aid, how the Holocaust came to be. That was all 10th grade, I'm in 11th grade now.
Where did you see the hook? what minute... in the video,,, Its a USA Hockey video, pretty sure they have a clue. get specific on your critique. The video shows examples of proper D,, and some improper D,,,, but keep coaching cause your an expert appartantly. Hook the guy into the boards? How do you hook a guy into the boards? Its called contact. keep up the good work rocklives4.
Men's National titles. That's what I'm counting. Honestly, I really don't feel like looking it up, but I'm really happy that you told me how many medals you have won, I can now sleep at night again. I'll get you the number tomorrow. To be honest, For me, It's all about what I can do. That's all I care about, is what I myself can do in the sport of hockey. That's where all of my pride comes from. But hey, I'm just a stupid American.
I'm not sure why you would "classify" hooking as anything different that is in the rulebook. Are you a ref? If you read the other comments I agree with you,,This is why I outlined rule 55 for the dolts that think it's hooking.
Canadians can proport this bi-lingual thing all they want. Most of the vacation tournaments we have down here, they barely speak a lick of english. Yes, I give you credit for having bi-linguil in your culture, but a great percentage of Americans speak 2 languages also. Does it not count because it's spanish? I could care less, the money is green, english, spanish, french-canadian. Speak swahili for all I care. You'll both note that there are more NHL teams in US.. if we ever have NHL again.
NOW THAT, my friend, is where you totally lost me. That's when this whole war started. I'll end with this. Personal accolades>Country accolades. As John F. Kennedy once quoted "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country". You should know that quote since Canadians delve so far into other country's history ;). Maybe I'll see you on the ice someday, and we can continue this battle, only more of a friendly match style of manner :) until then, Au revoir.
It's only as public as you want to it to be. Last time I checked it's MY CHANNEL! Make one of your own to vent your rambling's on. If you don't like my video then don't watch it or comment on it tough guy! OK your great at hockey, wow! you want a biscuit or something?
*Your contry, *it's your country, *it's mine. The way I'll end this debate is, is the fact that the game of hockey belongs to anyone willing to play. I have a couple Canadians on our team who give a beyond lackluster performance, while me and another American are leading in points. We also have a French Canadien who is a great skater. We also have a Russian who is average, but is still a decent player. Hockey is a sport for anyone and everyone to enjoy. Why so angry?
You know what, maybe I am stupid. I've been arguing with a complete stranger for over an hour. A stranger who I'll never meet, never see, never hear from, and probably never even talk to again. You'll be long gone and forgotten by tomorrow. I've just wasted an hour of my life... Life is too short for this. Way too short.
I don't speak fluent, I'll give you that, but all of that French I used is what I've learned. I'll be going into French 3 next semester. I'm all over the map because you said we only study America. 8 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronze medals. That's not nearing 100, buddy. OUR country's failures? LOL.
@blu3sman8 Thats all you can hang your hat on? What they call the skating. Actually it is called a back cross under because you cross your foot under backskating. No C-cuts were even demonstrated. If you think those are C-cuts, then you have never seen an actual C-cut. Go be a Laura Stamm instructor then get back to me. And troll somewhere else.
I've recently spoken to a few people about our recent conversation, Mr. Stamkos. I got some pretty odd looks, most saying that Canadians generally like Americans. You are indeed a disagreeable Canadian. Most Canadians I meet, whether Quebecois or Ontarians, are pretty kind-hearted and mellow people. Oh well, they can't all be winners, always have to have one asshole in the group, or else things just wouldn't be right. Tu es un vrai vache.
send me your info,,,don't post it here,,, I'll send you a copy. Your only getting about 10 minutes of 45 minute video.... I can straight copy to VHS or put it on a DVD but I lose quality because I am using a cheap VHS to DVD program.... The quality is bad enough to begin with....email and we can discuss. I have some other good ones from USA hockey.... " power skating, stick handling, goaltending 1 and 2, shooting and passing" etc... the quality is pretty low ,,, but I can copy them for you.
I fuckin' get it man, I don't think you are understanding what I'm trying to say, how cute. I will respect your opinion, that's fine. I'm clearly not going to change your opinion, just like how I can't convince you that I know French (Which I actually do, but whatever) because quite frankly, I couldn't care less. You're comparing us to two countries who haven't won shit, but that's fine. I will say, your point is anything BUT straight forward. Bringing up the education system, Americanism...
To an American who studied French last year, and studying Spanish this year, no this is not odd. And if I can offer a tip, you should really mix up words and adjectives. Is ignorant the only word you know? Stupid, naive (French Cognate), dull, misinformed, uninformed, and unintelligent are all synonyms.
I'm done with this conversation, because I'm arguing with a guy who's probably about 10 years old. Nothing wrong with nationalism, but before you start calling people insecure, you need to look at what you're saying. I have not bashed Canada once, I love Canada. Two of my best friends are from Quebec. However, that's all you have done is put down America and Americans. Seems like you're the one who is a little insecure, Monsieur Stamkos.
I brought war into this conversation because you brought up history. War is apart of history. Yeah, we suck, 11 national medals in the sport. We such ass, you're so right. Can I ask you something, what have you personally done in the sport? You talk as if you're gretzky, yet you're trash talking on an instructional video. Have fun being a Stamkos fan, have fun being a fan of another great man. Way to be original. I'm not impressed by your "education", either.
Why in the fuck would you want to join another country's army... it's beyond me. And considering your proximity to America, why wouldn't you just join the American army? This isn't a rhetorical question.
I know the exact difference. Since you insist that hockey is Canada's game, your is appropriate here(meaning possesion). Using you're would imply that YOU are great at hockey. Also, to quote something you posted here, "Somebody who attempts to correct your grammar over the internet = First sign of an insecure person trying to cover up their short comings", How come you don't have any video's of your own? Good or bad, go accomplish something, anything, even if it's wrong.
In 2010 we were second in the world... How are our American players any worse then your players? The best player in the playoffs this year was American... Last year it was also an American, and guess what, the year before that was also an American.
Among other American culture and life traits, your point was not clear at all. Because if it was, We would still not be doing this. Listen, if your point was straight forward, it would have been more like this "Americans suck at hockey, go back to fighting wars and eating hamburgers". OR "Canadians may be average at every other sport, but we dominate hockey, while you guys on the other hand, bend more than a contortionist". I understood your point UNTIL you went into our education system...
When are the times it's okay to correct someone's grammar? Should I check with you first? You said it showed insecurity, but it's okay if you do it correct? Again, you're great at hockey would imply you, your great at hockey meaning Canadians collectively. You may be great at hockey but you stink as a person and you're an oxygen thief. Alright we stink at hockey. Your country is great at hockey, but you stink at everything else, end of story.
not even close ovechkinisbesto8,,,, your another dummy that thinks forwards should not get thier fingernails broken,, are you going to start crying that open ice checks are illegal... its not hooking by the rules,,, but hockey has gone to crap these days,,, you cant touch anybody......
what has Canada done to contribute to the world? Also, what is your anger issue with the United States? I rarely meet an unlikable Canadian(unless they are from Montreal). Both of you need to check your grammar if your both so well educated "you country"? "is about hockey and you country sucks at it. Im not impressed by your high" scho
Excellent video even though it is dated. The basics have not changed - skating maneuverability is still more important than pure speed. Being able to change directions and get into position to give or receive a pass is what sets good hockey players apart from weaker players. I watched this video before reading the comments and immediately thought that you wouldn't get away with that now. Definitely a hook.
Thanks Suds..... I have a stackful of old USA hockey videos,,,, besides this one,,, and the Skills for Defensemen is only clips of the 2 part series....I've already promised Divenstrike this complete video. Let me know... (one of my favorite skaters).
I'd love to see Roger's video's he was an innovator and in my mind at least a genius when it came to teaching the game.
Rule 55 - Hooking
55.1 Hooking - Hooking is the act of using the stick in a manner that enables a player or goalkeeper to restrain an opponent.
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is not to be penalized as hooking.
Very cool, super informative and incredibly helpful. Thank you so much.
Great video, very educative and instructive for defence players, thanks!
Thanks for the possitive comments.. It's nice to see some.
Although some of the terminology and technique is somewhat dated in this older USA Hockey video...many ideas comcepts are good and create some good discussions on 1vs1's.
True, they actually did play ancient forms of hockey, as well as the egyptians.
And by the way, before you call someone ignorant, you should make sure you know the difference between its and it's. Just a friendly heads up.
Damn fine skating
@yachtzzuuup I dont disagree with you necessarily on the step out. You are fully commited once you do that. All posters need to remember this is an educational video right or wrong. Please, can You write here complete name (and year) of this full video? :/ I am looking for that, but can not find :(
what s the name of this video?
Nahh, I studied world history last year, mon ami. Learned about Russia, Germany, how France had to pull out of Vietnam, how America came to their aid, how the Holocaust came to be. That was all 10th grade, I'm in 11th grade now.
Less then 30secs into video I see holding charge.
Where did you see the hook? what minute... in the video,,, Its a USA Hockey video, pretty sure they have a clue. get specific on your critique. I'm not sure why you would "classify" hooking as anything different that is in the rulebook. Are you a ref? If you read the other comments I agree with you,,This is why I outlined rule 55 for the dolts that think it's hooking.
Stamkos is an angry Canadian it appears.
swizzles? c-cuts would have been i name i would have cracked up when i heard it
Lol the technique is good but why go for the stick when you can grab the puck and make a play ? And risk a penalty?

Yes,
no kidding most players are Canadian or European. Now can you go creep on somebody else's You Tube channel.
It's a demonstration video,,, and learn how to spell Defenseman ya dunce. Offenseman?,, how about Forward.
