I love flyfishing in small, beautiful, and clear creeks so much! The one near me is open for fishing after June 30th and I cannot wait to try all sorts of different flies and catch some small rainbows. But sometimes these small creeks can hold larger fish up to 5 lbs and those are usually the ones that produce all of the smaller trout.
That right there is my favorite fishing! A 2wt with a dry/dropper setup for Brookies in these tiny streams. You got some really nice ones. I usually can measure how good the fishing will be by how far I need to hike in! Well done Angler!
Thanks man! Yeah it was fun for sure! Some of my favorite also! And also, technically it was a 2 dry setup, the 2nd fly wasnt an emerger... Just a regular old caddis dry. But yeah, I hear ya. I actually went to just one fly after foul hooking a few. Didnt want to rip the fish up too much.
I love little mountain creeks. Peaceful, lots of fish, and all my own for that moment. I'm swinging up to the San Juans and going to hit my favorite old stream this Sept. Nice vid.
Better check the local regulations. For now they closed down the San Juan’s, started today. Due to fire hazards you can’t even set foot in the forests and they don’t know when it will open up. I went yesterday (that video not edited yet) because I knew they would close it down today.
Wow, thats a new one. I don't remember the rangers closing the whole forest during the Missionary Ridge Fire. Guess I'll get my small stream fishing up here near Salida and up near Leadville. Good luck fishing this summer. San Juan and Animas all summer?
Yeah I know, it’s a little extreme I think, but I don’t make the laws. It might be re-opened by september, and I’m pretty sure it will be. However I was also pretty sure the fire wasn’t going to reach my parents house, and they are on pre-evac. So.....
Depends on the stream and what kinda flies you plan on fishing. Is there lots of brush? Tight casts? A 2-3wt could be better, at least a shorter rod, under 8’. Dry fly only? Or just only light nymphs? Yeah you will have more feel and more fun fishing for smaller creek fish. If you were gonna make the purchase I’d recommend a www.risenfly.com rod called the genesis. $109 and it’s really good. Plus with the discount code McFly at checkout it will be less than $100. Best sub $100 rod I’ve ever fished. Get the 7’6” 3wt and you will be really happy. While your at it, they sell a reel right around the $100 mark also. You could get a 2nd reel to hold the 3wt line so your not reading the line back and forth. It’s a really good reel also.
Totally appreciate that you keep the locations on the 'down low'. That's part of the adventure, pull out the topo maps choose a spot on the map and go! I live in Rye, Co. If ever you'd like some company hit me up man. I'm always planning up my next weekend on the water.
Nice video. By far my favorite kind of fishing. Here in eastern and central PA we have small streams with native brookies and browns. I will give up trips to the larger streams to fish those tiny streams. Nothing like a 2 or 3 wt and no waders. My brother and I just did this a week or ago. Very productive day to say the least.
Oh man that depends on the river. I mean for me, I always used to fish a 6x leader with my sub 3wt rods. But you could go with a 5x if you need the extra strength. I always used a 7.5’ leader vs the 9’, then would tie a small piece of flouro tippet on the end if I wanted extra length. I found the shorter leader helped me be a bit more accurate in the right courters of brush lined small creeks.
What's going on man, I'm headed up to Durango on Saturday for a week and am new to fly fishing and plan on exploring some spots in Durango to give it a go... Just curious if you had any recommendations on a few spots to try... not asking for any honey holes but a little insight would be greatly appreciated!
Right now it’s tough, we had a dry winter and many of the small creeks just aren’t flowing well. The Animas is even low, however I think it’s fishable. Your best bet right now is going to be the San Juan down in new mexico
I have a Sword 11 3/4 1 for my TFO 2wt but it looks a lot smaller than your reel. Maybe it is just the way it looks on the video? I do see a #1 on the reel the same as mine. Enjoyed the video.
Yeah, the camera being a super wide angle has that fishbowl effect. So things closer look really close. Kinda like when your viewing your rear view mirror in the car and it has that sign “things might appear larger than they are” or something like that.
Greetings from Norway! Love your vids. I also consider a 2wt. Do you think a 2wt (graphite rod, loop evotec mf 8,6ft 2wt) would cast dry size 8-10? Just curious and dont want to spoil money....
I’ve not fished the loop ecotec, is it considered moderate or fast action? If fast then yeah it should, depending on the dry fly of course. But a moderate might be difficult if you can’t double haul really well. Maybe jump up to a 3wt
@@McFlyAngler thank you for the reply. Here in Norway we have a lot of small rivers with trout and grayling 500 gram at the most, so a 2wt would be great :)
Great video. So I'm new to fly fishing have a 10 3wt 10 4 wt have done just wade fishing lakes and rivers here in new mexico. Would like to try our smaller streams etc. Your thoughts on 6 6 2wt. Or 7.6 3 wt. For this style fishing. Are mine to long for small streams in tight areas? Thanks in advance
Thanks man, yeah I really don’t care if people don’t like my vids. Haha. I mean, I don’t care if “those” people don’t. Glad you like it though. Most of the thumbs down are people that just don’t like me, not neccisarily the video. Over the past 2 years I’ve gained a few haters for reasons I can’t tell ya. Not sure if they don’t like me giving away spots, or teaching people to fish... but they just don’t. So they have no life and litterally go though just to hit the thumb down on my videos. Go look at my past vids, almost all of them have 4 thumbs down, some a bit more, but most are 4... comes in within a day of the video being live. Then usually nothing much more after that. 4 guys with no life following me around just to thumb me down. Haha. It’s kinda funny really!
Thank you! You should! It’s amazing! You know I come from a saltwater background fly fishing for reds. While I miss the line stripping fights, and big massive fish, but there is something Amazing about this kind of fishing
In the beginning of the video you said there was a fire north of Durango, that is true because Electra lake is just North of Durango and you could see what's left over from the fire and the mud slide from the lake👍👍
The name Columbine In the columbine flower Gives it A new More elegant Meaning Thanks to what happened 20 some odd years ago (I forgot the date) It’s kind of ironic, Since the flower so beautiful
Well the school was named after the flower. Yes that was tragic. Sad how we have become numbed to this type of thing now a days. So sad what has been happening to our youth and general public in America.
That looked like Brookies. Why were they not eaten? I release almost all my trout Brook Trout that is, but they are native. Are there Cuts in these creeks? A good Brook Trout out west is a fried one.
@@McFlyAngler yeah I've noticed when I run really lightweight fly rods I have to run 1/2 otherwise the weight distribution sucks the reel is too heavy. If you want to throw a larger flies just get slightly heavier line 2 WT. We fish a ton of small creeks in my state I only need 30 yards

Yeah, and those big ones are ones you should be extra careful with while handling.

Had the opportunity to fish in and around Durango and Pagosa Springs last fall. Excellent fishing and mind blowing scenery!!
It’s beautiful absolutely! I miss it very much!

I’d like a small stream setup, but I already have a 4wt. Would you recommend jumping to a 2wt over a 3wt, just for variation?

I just purchased a 7’3” 2 weight and I’m excited to hit up some high elevation brook trout streams. Any tips for leaders? Length and diameter?
Oh man that depends on the river. I mean for me, I always used to fish a 6x leader with my sub 3wt rods. But you could go with a 5x if you need the extra strength. I enjoyed that. Tight loops my friend.

Thanks!
Another good video MFA- tight lines brotha!
Thanks man!
How do you like the classic trout I am thinking about getting one for myself
It’s good. Personally I like risen’s genesis better if your looking for a 3wt or 5wt. But I do like the classic trout also.

@@McFlyAngler its a medium-fast rod. They have a 3wt, but it is only in 9ft so a little bit long for me.
Ok then if it’s fast action it probably will work as long as the dry flies aren’t too bulky.

with this shallow creek i think u need to use wt1 fly set .. maybe ..
Naw, don’t need to. Would it be more fun? Maybe. This worked just fine. Still a blast with these fish.
@@McFlyAngler i think it would be more blast for that size of fish u will catch & more fun too ..
Ok, well when you fish go with a 1wt.
great vid what was you using for a leader and length also tippet size and length
7.5” 6x nylon leader with a 6” section of 6x fluorocarbon tippet.
Thanks Mark
I love your background music. Jazzy. Could you please tell me the name of the song?
Thanks man, so right at the end of the video, I listed the music used. There are a few songs.
What's the second song with the guitar
That will be my next rod set up. I want something for small Creeks
Yeah man, nothing better than light rods and tiny bugs! Haha. This Redington isn’t bad either.
McFly Angler I had a 7'6 4wt reddington but I sold it a while back 😔
I’ve sold off some great things I regret also man...
Nice video! There is something about chasing brook trout in small streams.
Yes there is!
I finaly got a chance to fish the La Plata but they closed the forest. Bummer.
SHHHH dont tell people where this is. HAHAHAHA
Another great video Mr. McFly. I've never done any fishing like that before living in Florida, but I hope to some day.

I wasn’t ready to eat them that day. And, I didn’t feel like it. Lol
No matter what we do, gloves will remove the protective layer..... I try to not even touch those little Brooke Trout
Some slime removal isn’t a death sentence for the trout. They make new slime. Just be as careful as possible with them and they should survive.
4'2 or 5'6 with 1/2. 0 weight!
That’s a good option also, just hard to cast larger dry flies…

Should of kept going up that creek there is a really nice waterfall up stream a ways with lots of hungry Brook trout
It got too late... I’ll try next year for sure
