    It's taken my household seven years to bring dead sand and sandstone property to life. I have easily put down 300 cubic meters of tree mulch, the same in mushroom compost. 50cube of blue metal crusher dust and gravel. Grass loves the gravel, everywhere I put the gravel grass spreads to it. Put down about 30 cube of forest mulch and ultra-mix vegetable soil down as well.
    The hardest and most important thing I have found with bringing the land back to life. Is understanding how water moves across the property and complimenting the flow. Trying to change the flow can have unintended consequences.
    Mushroom compost was super important to add to the land to establish the communication network between the plants. I get mushrooms every season now.
    Worms, I have dumped tens of thousands of worms in my yard. They have over the last seven years processed the top 50mm to 100mm of soil into usable soil for plants.
    This tip is one I wish I realised sooner. Take lots of photos of the property. You can become blind to the drastic changes to the land because it doesn't move and change at our pace. It's truly amazing to be able to go back and look at the property before you started and see the difference from today or the changes along the way.

    When getting into the aquarium hobby I learned more about the nitrogen cycle and micro biology in a couple weeks than what I learned about it in the gardening community over the years. It really needs to be a much higher priority than it's been. And after a few years of building the microbiology in my garden soils it's finally showing the amazing results and I'm so excited to see what the gardens do this year.

    • @joannc147
      @joannc147 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point! I had a large freshwater aquarium years ago and it was fascinating to watch the natural biology take over. Working now on my sandy 1/2 acre which teems with soil biology. A gardener asked me last year how I dealt with a particular insect infestation. Oops, sorry, can’t help ya. My garden isn’t perfect, but it sure has a natural balance wherein pests are a non-issue. 👍🏻

    Doug and Stacy compost their poop and say it takes 2 yrs to be ready to use. Back in the day of outhouses. The old timers would move the location of the outhouse and then plant an apple tree where the old one was, which would flourish and provide fruit for year's! ❤️

  • @jvin248
    @jvin248 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    You don't need to be complicated with compost ... the first hurdle is just placing mulch around the plants so the soil remains cooler. Find leaves or pull tall grass and put that down (some vineyards pile stones along grape vine rows to insulate the soil). Plant the same varieties of plants in rectangular blocks not long single rows. For survival crops focus on potatoes, dry beans, dent/flint corn, and winter squash. Learn to nixtamalize the corn (wood ash/CAL/baking soda) to release more nutrients. Too many think they are going to survive the winter on half a dozen tomato plants, peppers, and green beans -- those are more the flavoring nice to have side dishes. Study J Lofthouse's ideas of Landrace Gardening -- get multiple varieties of a crop and mix the seeds, keep and replant the crosses that are successful, and you will have an adapted plant for your soil and your gardening techniques. Look up the Mormon prepping manual (pdf) and you will get an idea of the seriousness of growing your own food (something like four hundred pounds of grains and fifty pounds of dry beans per adult for a year top the list -- a year means from harvest until you can get to the next harvest).

    Howdy old fella.
    Rob from central Victoria Australia here.
    Love your show and guests by the way.
    We had a horticultureist neighbour live with us for a year or so and introduced us to some permiculture principles. I'll never go back to my old farm thinking again!
    I collected heaps of clean sawdust, horse and cattle manure and some fermented barley from a mate who has a small brewery.
    Due to my laziness it all grew over with grasses during the winter and spring. I piled it all up (about 120 cubic metres) and 2 months later it was the best dirt I'd ever seen! Chocoblock full of worms!! It was 80% worm crap I'd rekon.
    There is meant to be 1/3 fresh grass clippings so I think my Homer Simpson like attitude paid off😊 we've just entered into Autumn here and already my collies, broccoli , leafy greens, medication, beans and rhubarb have taken off like galloping horses.
    My advice, always think.. what would Homer do? WWHD
    Thanks again for the show.
    I'm off to the brewery to get some ..🤔😏😏grain for the garden☺🍻
    Cheers mate.

    So I have had a mole problem in the yard forever and they did find my Grow Dome. To me they were an asset as the plow through the clay and turn over the soil. They are very disruptive though. I put one copper pipe north and a second copper pipe South into the ground. Then I did soft copper wound around bamboo skewers for individual plants. The grow has doubled in a week. The weather has been too warm , then too cold and way to wet all Feb and now March. It is aphid season here in my neck of the woods. Especially in doors. I have copper in my indoor green house as well. I am not seeing fungus, spider mite or aphids. I did have spider mite in the Dome before I instituted the copper. I don't have moles in here anymore. Maybe like ants they hate the smell? Now in the yard I am using cloves of garlic where I see tunnels. Also an easy alternative. GBY guys who come here and GBY David.

    • @sassafrasred6657
      @sassafrasred6657 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Read up on bioremediation and mycoremediation. The biggest issue is how long the ground is out of food production while you remediate the soil. Mustards and all brassica, sunflowers, and oyster mushrooms all remove toxins. However you have to treat the plant material, leaves, stalks roots and all as toxic waste.

      You can sterilize your soil with a microwave or oven 180 to 200 degrees in the center of it in the microwave it's 90 seconds as far as getting rid of your insecticides and artificial fertilizers I mean good luck with that it takes 7 to eleven years of feeding the soil with clean compost I believe they're talking about purchasing already clean compost but there again the reason she's testing her compost that she purchased to plant her plants in is because they get contaminated with bugs and that's why I was suggesting the microwave I'm having to do that right now I did not realize until this year last year when I purchased a bunch of compost it was filled with various bugs that you couldn't see the eggs I couldn't get anything to grow I had such a bug problem three different kinds of bugs and didn't realize it was the compost thought it was my greenhouse was the first year of using my greenhouse and this year it's doing the same thing so I'm realizing it's the soil

    I know and agree with the discussion. My point is the same or comporable chemicles were used in warfare in the Western and Eastern front of World War One. Obviously use the agents in the two areas were several times more than the concentration then broadcast by deliberate explosion. Were tests done in France, Belgium or in Belarus, Russia, Serbia, Italy or other places to see the effects now in those areas and how it reflects on East Palestine? From what I discovered about Viet Nam at this moment when I am writing this the effects of the use of Ogent Orange is causing sterility and population recession now.

      That’s a surprising comment. Chicks run $5-15 apiece for most breeds. Hens eats table scraps, weeds and bugs. I find them to be easy and very amusing as well. I provide com’l feed, but they are frugal with that. Good luck! 🐓🐓

    Adjusting up the quantity of "homemade" fertilizers into the amounts needed for commercial agriculture is obtainable. It is being done on some level by some farmers, but we don't hear much from them about this, or instructions as to how to make and apply it with simple techniques and spreaders they already have. I wish, in all the farming/growing videos we watch, that we could hear more from the big growers as to how they are faring in cutting fertilizer prices by processing their own formulas. Even smaller farmers must be having some successes with it, but we don't hear much. This has so much to do with the cost of foods, too, although I know the farmers are not all to blame for prices. "Big Ag" has much invested in machinery, and some of it is designed for application of commercial products. But they often can be modified in such a way as to be workable in other formulas that will sustain and "grow" the soils, not just kill bugs and weeds and provide limited amounts of synthetic fertilizers. Just my thoughts.

    • @jessicahanover3633
      @jessicahanover3633 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rabbit manure can be used fresh, but you need to age chicken manure as it is a "hot" manure that will burn your young plants. As far as age, I have used 10 year old manure and done fine with it.

      Moles are indifferent to bulbs. Moles ear MEAT -- larvae, etc. you are thinking of Voles - that’s “V” for vegetarian.. surrounding your in-ground garden beds with daffodils and/or garlic (any alliums) are good deterrents for Voles.

    I don't know how but Japan use all their human waste, they must have a great system. In very rural areas of the UK farmers dump their sewage tank waste on the fields which animals then graze from, I mean out riding I have seen fields covered in sanitary products and loo roll
