Here's an apt explanation, maybe. Most people do not understand that their camera - especially most point and shoot cameras, use internal software to edit the photo from the RAW file into JPEG files automatically, which is why the P&S photos look better than the actual shot. Those consumers NEVER SEE the crappy flat, un-sharpened, non-color corrected RAW file of the picture they took. They only see the finalized JPEG (which is way better than the actual photo they took! LOL! When Pros have go go through the laborious process to cull photos from 100s or 1000s, then edit them manually in Lightroom the 'art of photography' is lost on most consumers.
Hi Jessica, well done on getting out there and bringing up the difficult parts of the business that photographers deal with. I've been in the business for over a decade and I specialise (Irish spelling!) in PR and Corporate photography. When pricing, photographers need to know that what they do can have massive influence on local and world events. Babies are only small for a short time, events come and go, we all go through major 'life milestones' be it weddings, family deaths or up/down turns in the economy. Photography has the unique ability to record the present and immortalise the past...that has real value.
Thank you Jessica for everything you teach us... I'm a new photographer and I don't have any photographers around to ask all these questions :) I feel you're my experienced photographer friend ♥ God bless you.
You’re an blessing! I love you for so many reasons. It’s like you are teaching everything my professors didn’t teach me in two years. I keep learning AND TAKING NOTES from your videos every chance I get. Thank you, thank you, thank you 💛
I just discovered your videos and I'm loving them! I wish I knew about these when I formed my business a year ago. You give solid, thorough advice. No gimmicks here. You tell us all the information without trying to sell a dvd lol
I love your videos. Everything makes so much sense now I feel like everything was so blurry and didn't really make much sense (in terms of pricing and clients) but now everything just seems so much clearer. Thank you for these videos I absolutely love them
I feel you on Nikon; I find the controls really counter-intuitive. I'm sure if I owned one I'd get used to it eventually - but why go through that pain? I used to shoot Canon, now on Pentax.
you are truly amazing! Well I do have little question. How'd you get your first client? Because I know word of mouth is the most powerful way to make yourself known, but that first client usually is kind of hard to find. And how much did you charge them the first time? Thanks!!
Unedited is similar to negatives. In the old days I always retained the negs, and made it clear to the client those were my property. Do you watermark proofs?
Your welcome. I'm trying to get into portraits but I never shot anyone other than family so I have no portfolio. Problem is models might not work with out without one so it's a bit of a catch 22.
Thank you, this was very helpful! I've been looking into opening up my photography to those around me and I will definitely keep all of your advice in mind! On kind of a side note, do you keep all of your 'old' files? For example all the SOOC pictures, PSD files etc. or is there a certain period of time after you delete them? And do you keep your finished product to potentially add to your portfolio, how would you go about that? I sometimes get the feeling that I could be invading their privacy by sharing a personal image of that client.
Hi Jessica!!! I love your work, it's beautiful! I am a photographer that is just starting and I was wondering if you could guide me in the price range.
Very well presented. Great job. You have touched upon some very crucial areas in knowing where your costs are, what your clients are willing to pay for excellent work. Everything takes time and this is particularly true when seeking to be a successful business person. I am looking forward to more of your outstanding videos and advice. Thanks a million, Tony. :))
JESSICA you need a logo that is more you and represents all of your awesomeness in one graphic. I always wondered why I never saw your logo shown anywhere especially with all your photoshop skills.
Thank you Jessica for this great video! I have been learning a looot from you and I truly appreciate all your efforts. I am a true Nikon person though and I once tried shooting with Canon and oh well, a manual was the first thing I needed. I guess I prefer this brand since it was the first I was introduced to and resultantly got used to. Perhaps you mentioned this but do you charge only for your wedding photography or also for model portraits? Wish you well, keep developing and surpring us with your work!
Thanks! You talk with a candidness that impress me a lot. Better than Adorama o BH presentations. I learn a lot. Thanks again and best wishes for you,,!
I'm just trying to figure out how common it is to be doing photography just starting out and everything is paid under the table.. Does the business have to be registered to accept debit/credit and paying taxes or strictly cash only if it's just a side money thing.. I currently have another career and am unable to pursue photography 100% of the time and constantly doing shoots.. However i am free enough to shoot on weekends..Do clients feel more comfortable and secure when they are able to pay with card? Any advice from anyone would be nice thank you..
'I don't give out unedited pictures' I learnt that the hard way lol. I gave one of my clients a copy of the SD card folder and upon checking the original folder there are some awkward photos of one of my friends in the mix that I took while we we're having a quick smoke break during that pre-wedding shoot.
This is very informative. I just graduated with a degree in Digital Art & Design and am looking for work. I want to do graphic design and videography. I'm not sure how to really get started, like how to get clients and stuff. I have a portfolio on Blogger.
i have a question, so my friends and i started taking photos for people and we sort through it all at the end. When its time for clients to pick which ones they want us to edit (and pay for), is there a way for us to show them the pictures they can choose from without meeting in person? I'm always worried that they might take unedited photos that they didn't pay for and save it to their computer. I know we can put watermarks on the original pictures but sometimes there's too many pictures to put watermarks on
Just like the video! Thank you for your suggestions! My husband and I just started photography business, before we were taking pictures for free for our friends, so i think they got used to it. Now, when we are setting affordable prices, clients are not writing back. Not even "thanks, but this is expensive". Should we lower the price_ Cause i do not understand what to do, we have wedding packages from normal price down to very cheap one, and no response on it even. Thank you P.S. or maybe smb else had the same problem?
You said you can slowly start raising your price after people value your work. However, how do you get people to value the work? There are a lot of great photographers out there are its hard to choose, so how do you stand out?
You lost me on the whole portrait session & giving 1 or 2 pics per look, and "if" they wanna pay extra for the retouched pictures? Could you clarify this for me? Do you still charge the $100 or $150 per outfit? & if they don't wanna pay for the retouched photos, what are they getting? TIA for the info.
People don't just spend money on you if you have a name... Well, unless you're like a huge company. - But you also have to have the results to back it up. I mean, you better have high standards and images that leave an impression so that it also draws people.

I'm a Canon person, thanks for all you tips, I dont charge for my photo shoots as I all ready have a different job in England, but I will retire in 3 years time, and I hope to earn some pocket money, you answers where very help full, thanks for the video
If you're shooting for something like a magazine, is it okay to add unedited pictures to a syndication site? i've seen unedited photos on those types of sites where you can purchase them legally and i want to know if that's how i should do it
This video is great, it's given me a lot to think about, we have very similar thoughts about a lot of the topics, although you have built up much more of a brand than I have, as I have not been doing this for too long. On watermarks, I totally agree with you on watermarks that are huge and in the center, it's annoying. However, I use a very small and mostly see through watermark in the bottom right for recognition only, not exposure and not protection, let's be honest you basically can't prevent image theft these days. I see it as an attachment to my brand, that way people who are familiar with my work can see that I took an image based on the watermark. Like you, I don't care if it's cropped out on Facebook, the only think I ask for is a tag in the picture :) I'm currently in the stage of building a client base, it's pretty difficult even with really low prices, I'm hoping to make it somewhere eventually :)
I don't know if you've answered this question anywhere, but did you get formal education when it comes to photography, or did you use your resources (ie. the internet) and just teach yourself? And do you think it's necessary/worth it to get formal education?
I have a bachelors of fine arts (graphic design major). I did take a film photography course..but didn't help much. I taught myself from scratch everything there was to know. As far as photography goes, I don't think a degree/going through school is necessary (of course you'll learn a lot of helpful technical things which I acknowledge) *BUT* you have to be willing to put in tons of time to learn on your own, whether that's tutorials, practicing, reading books, etc. it's kind of like homeschooling yourself. I used all the resources I could....watched hundreds of tutorials, read tons of articles, got books..and most of all, I practiced as much as I could :)
That's awesome! I'm a communications major but I'm considering photography double majoring because I enjoy both but I don't know if it's completely worth it just yet. I've already begun my own little photography business and I'm learning as I go. Your videos help a lot! I admire you so much for the reputation and recognition you've built for yourself, masha'Allah! I wish you the best for what's to come, and thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my comments and answer my questions!
Amy Ali Of course! Thank you for your support, that means a lot :) If you ever have a request or an idea please let me know, I'm always on the lookout for new videos to make..sometimes I run out of ideas, haha. I also wish you the very best, inshallah you reach your goal and even more ^_^
For fashion photography, if you only give the client 1 or 2 pics per look, how many pics do you usually take per look? Also if i did a wedding and i took 500 pics and 450 of them look decent enough to process, do i give them all of those photos or should i just give them a certain amount like let’s say 100?
When you say "looks" are you refering to outfits or backgrounds? And do you give one or two images for a portrait shoot and then the client can choose to buy more? thanks :)
When u say you re-size for PROOFS,what size do u do? About 400-600 px or thereabouts? AND when u say add a disclaimer not to use,do you add a note with the email or is it a legally binding contract??
How much you charge as a beginner and how many pictures, size etc. do you give them, or is it all digital at the beginning? What's your advice please :)
I loved this video.. I have this problem now. Im one of three photographers at my new university. And I'm competing with a guy that prices are a little cheaper than mine and he is more know. I don't think I should lower because I believe the quality of my pictures for the price is fair
In the days of film we never edited pictures, we shot the wedding pics and the bad ones we threw out , kept the good ones. No computer was needed. I suppose now that you have grown up on Photoshop you think you need to edit.
OH GAWD, im embarrassed to say what used to charge for weddings/seniors when i first started out. . .no wonder i had my phone blowing up all hours of the day & night 😅🤣😂
Hey, when it comes to watermarks that you touched on in this video, why not add your name and website into the EXIF data? That's what I do. I have it built into the picture that it automatically posts "Photo by: RHardinPhotography" and a line below that it says "RHardinPhotography.com" whenever they put it somewhere that has an "about the photo" section (I.E. Facebook) They can delete it but even still, if someone else tries to share the post or saves the image and re uploads it, it will post it again. This is particularly useful with commercial images where it may be sent to a magazine or newspaper. The people in charge of that outlet will see the exif data and if they still use it without permission you have the means to go after them for it. Lightroom is a wonderful tool lol
Watermarks are good if you are copyright your photos and someone steals your work and say that they took it to get busy. By them removing the watermark its shows that the altered your work and you can sue
Yes, but those would be resized photos used as PROOS only - with a disclaimer NOT to be posted online. When I mentioned unedited photos in that context saying DON'T give out unedited photos - I mean giving them the full resolution original images for their own use. Never do that
Great video, you mentioned that people take your work with or without your watermark, you could take legal action because that's your work and your copyright especially if they're trying to make a coin off of it.
DGKVISIONS It's mostly people living in other countries, and that's always tough. There's really nothing I can do besides get mad and try to get them to take it off...
in my opinion if they pay for your work, then they have all the rights to do what want with their pictures and if someone steals them, then they're stealing from the client. Idk if I make sense, but I see artists do this all the time to avoid the headache of copyright.
Im in television commercial production and no way do we let the client have the wild footage. Its not their business. We charge to make a commercial from the footage we take and thats what is used in their product. The footage is ours, not theirs.
I am five years late but I hope you see this and help me out. My question is: "would telling a client that I'm kindof just starting out and not really a pro make them think that I'm unexperienced and probably scare them away?"
I agree with you on the watermark. I see people post wedding photos and they have this big ugly watermark on it. I will not pay money for that rubbish. It takes away from the photo.
Yeah i took wedding pictures for a couple in Las Vegas at red rock, the agreement was for 70 pictures, i gave the 140, the fool took me to court and the judge just laughed and the judgement was for me. he lost, the pictures were perfect and the judge agreed.
+Darrel Lee wait, let me clarify: they asked for 70 images, and you gave them two times as much, and he attempted to sue you? because you gave him extra photos for free? am i understanding this correctly? did he not want free extra pictures?
oh dear, thank you for the watermark comment. finally, someone who does not like it as well... hahah but, no hate for nikon please :D overall, great informative video. thanks (:
Brilliant your comment, "Unedited pictures are not the reflection of your work, they are the foundation your work is based." Totally agree.
Anthony Voci Some people just don't understand that, and it's hard to explain to them :/
Here's an apt explanation, maybe. Most people do not understand that their camera - especially most point and shoot cameras, use internal software to edit the photo from the RAW file into JPEG files automatically, which is why the P&S photos look better than the actual shot. Never lower your price. You said it perfectly, take away a service or product but don't just lower your price. Ever!

Keep up doing your amazing work!
How often do you change dslr body since you shoot a lot? Because the actuations eventually dies down after a lot of pictures.
Thanks Jessica..I'm just starting my freelance photography and this helps me a lot.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Very good tips for the new ones in business.
This video was so helpful Jessica, thanks so much!
mudersville thank you for watching :)

Luv ur videos!
You are great!
Muchas gracias!
Good tutorials....do you recommend a best place to print the pic???...
Loved the video, but what nikon did you use, I love both my Nikons, and have a had time using canon
notso smoothjazz I used a 3200 I think. It was just a joke but I really did have to use a manual, it was very confusing :P
Great video. I like canon.
1 or 2 pictures per look?? Does that mean per outfit or am I understanding this in a wrong way?
subotic barbi yes per outfit. She mostly does fashion looks.
I'm tryna understand what she mean by that also.. example maybe? Pricing wise..
Thanks for clarifying!!
Canon all the way Jessica :)
Well answer questions very well
You're awesome. Good info.
'I don't give out unedited pictures'
I learnt that the hard way lol. I gave one of my clients a copy of the SD card folder and upon checking the original folder there are some awkward photos of one of my friends in the mix that I took while we we're having a quick smoke break during that pre-wedding shoot.
having never shot a wedding before, I've been asked to do two this year. how should I prepare? should I be a second shooter at couple weddings?
Amazing lecture. What is the best software to edit pictures?
Very good advise with that said, how do you say it straight up like the eyebrows look nice from a photographers point of view the 👀. lol
This is very informative. I just graduated with a degree in Digital Art & Design and am looking for work. I want to do graphic design and videography. I'm not sure how to really get started, like how to get clients and stuff. I have a portfolio on Blogger.
Hi Jessica I love your work. how do you feel about people adding filters to your pics is that something you put on your contract?
i have a question, so my friends and i started taking photos for people and we sort through it all at the end. LOVE LOVE
LOVE it!! I Just let my clients be HAPPY! LOL LOL You sooo remind me of Jennifer Lopez....
"Per look." Is that the actual wording in your contract?
If you include a second shooter, how much do you pay them? Do you each get half the cost?
this was very helpful!!
Do you provide the props or the clothing for a photo shoot, and if so what is the right amount to charge for using your items?
Again, thank you veru much!

do you think what kind of gear a photographer uses matters? ex: type of camera, lenses, flash lights

No Canon for me, lol. Wouldn't want to reinvest in all new lenses, lol
QUESTION: Where do you do your advertising? Also have you used Facebook Ads before?
Rattu I have but FB advertising is horrible now so I steer clear of it! I just post on my fb/instagram and that's it
In the days of film we never edited pictures, we shot the wedding pics and the bad ones we threw out , kept the good ones. No computer was needed. I suppose now that you have grown up on Photoshop you think you need to edit.

Yes, but those would be resized photos used as PROOS only - with a disclaimer NOT to be posted online. When I mentioned unedited photos in that context saying DON'T give out unedited photos - I mean giving them the full resolution original images for their own use. Never do that
how long are you at weddings
What do you mean by "the look" is that a portrait photo session?
Carmen she does mostly fashion/ models so per outfit change
Great video, you mentioned that people take your work with or without your watermark, you could take legal action because that's your work and your copyright especially if they're trying to make a coin off of it.
DGKVISIONS It's mostly people living in other countries, and that's always tough. There's really nothing I can do besides get mad and try to get them to take it off...
Canon is just a lot more intuitive, at least to someone not that camera savvy, like me.
in my opinion if they pay for your work, then they have all the rights to do what want with their pictures and if someone steals them, then they're stealing from the client. Idk if I make sense, but I see artists do this all the time to avoid the headache of copyright.
Im in television commercial production and no way do we let the client have the wild footage. Its not their business. We charge to make a commercial from the footage we take and thats what is used in their product. The footage is ours, not theirs.
It was hard not to unlike the video by your last comment. Nikon is not as bad as you think )-,:
Someone the other day said that $1000 for a wedding was too much. Haaaaaaa where do these people come from 😝
Vaughn Felix They may have meant $1000.00 is more than they could afford to pay.
Never Canon! :P
oh dear, thank you for the watermark comment. finally, someone who does not like it as well... hahah
but, no hate for nikon please :D
overall, great informative video. thanks (:
FIA FIA Hahah I was kidding about Nikon I swear :P EVERYONE always tells me to put watermarks on my work...noooo wayyy!!! Too ugly :$
