You hit the points with Alola perfectly, additionally, I just think its underrated how local and “home-ey” the region feels. In other generations, the gym leaders and E4 members are so grandiose and their built up to be such a big deal, but in Alola, no matter their title, everyone feels like family or friend! I love it.

One of my favorite underrated things were Team Skull Grunts. The way they always rhymed everything they wanted to say along with their wanna-be hard attitude was hilarious, made better by the fact that nobody in Alola takes them seriously. 😂 Most games you have the NPC’s cowering behind you for your help, but with Team Skull Grunts people were usually just mildly annoyed. Plasma was my favorite as a serious threat, but Skull takes the cake on comic relief.

I really appreciated that Galar did something to really build up lore behind the gyms themselves and the culture surrounding the gym challenge. Past games had expanded on the gym leaders as characters and on gym mechanics. Sun and Moon created lore behind its own different gym-like mechanic, but it always gnawed at me how the gyms in previous games felt somehow isolated from a lot of the rest of the game. They sort of stayed as a purely gameplay oriented thing for a long time.
Galar really made it clear how these things work and why they're built and I think the many fans coming to watch made it clear to me what felt off in previous iterations. The sense that other people were coming to watch these fights and challenges made it a lot more clear why people built these crazy gyms, and the fans already sitting in the stands to watch made it really feel like there were other people going through the gyms before and after you. Other games will likely have their own lore behind how their gyms came to be and why people participate in the league, but for Galar, it was the sense of community that made it feel alive. :)

    • @BG12sofia
      @BG12sofia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

Yes! Yes! That's the thing I love about Galar: the focus on the spetacle, how it draws inspiration from football (real football, not the American one) and the league arcs from the anime. The Gym Challenge is treated like larger than life events, it's part of the region's culture, and the Challengers each have their personal reasons to go on a Pokémon journey, their own legacies to fulfill. Finally the multiple rivals trope done right.

Thanks for this comment because I totally agree! This game made me feel like a Pokemon champion, not just a new trainer getting badges on my way to deal with the ongoing conflict in the region. Honestly, the first time I played Sword, it was a magical experience because of the culture surrounding the gym challenge that wasn't in other generations.

@@ad-skyobsidion4267 It’s hilarious how someone as battle-ready and childishly cheerful as Leon is more level-headed, logical, and especially has better common sense than guys like Steven(doesn’t actually do much to stop the villains besides help in 1 double battle), Lance(doesn’t even show up to any of the Team Rocket events besides 1 in the Lake of Rage and hidden hq, not even helping in the final event in Goldenrod town), and especially Cynthia, who does literally nothing to help you, not even battling the big boss Cyrus at least once, and acts as nothing more than an over glorified cheerleader for the endgame of the plot, seriously it’s the one thing I absolutely hate about Cynthia, and if she wasn’t one of my favorite/first Champion battles along with generally being portrayed as a cool person to hang out with along with being a mythology nut(which I completely and wholeheartedly enjoyed finding out since I’ve always been a massive fan of mythology in general), she would be my least favorite champion in all of Pokémon, even worse than Diantha, who at least gains some points in regards to her portrayal in the anime giving her justice as one of the 2 main people alongside Steven protecting all the civilians, which in my opinion is singlehandedly the most badass hero team-up I’ve ever seen in Pokémon. Leon is the only one who legitimately takes his role as the strongest trainer in Galar genuinely seriously, to the point of taking on Eternatus alone, and possibly even weakening it, all the while regularly taking on multiple Wild dynamaxed Pokémon alone. The guy truly cares about his region, more so than any other champion has, so he definitely got my respect for that, even if he wasn’t as tough as some other champions, like Gen-1 Blue(that f%#king Alakazam...), Cynthia(You all know exactly what I’m talking about when I say, that f#%king team in general...), and even Iris(Challenge Mode at its most difficult) of all people(that f%#king Hydreigon and especially that %#king Haxorus), he was still in my own opinion actually difficult and well rounded. His Charizard being a surprisingly way more difficult beast than Red’s own, since unlike Red(who in my opinion is actually one of the weakest champion battles gameplay wise, since 3 of his Pokémon, including his heaviest hitters Charizard and Blastoise, are weak to Electric type attacks, his front Pokémon gets one shot by Ground-type moves from any decently fast Pokémon(including multiple starters), and 2 of his Pokémon are weak to Fighting type moves(Snorlax and Lapras, with Lapras in particular being weak to 2 of the main types that cover most of Red’s team), and the only Pokémon that need coverage against them alone is Venusaur, who in return has multiple counters in Psychic, Fire, Flying, and/or Ice). Meanwhile, Leon’s Charizard actually has Coverage moves like Ancient Power(which he unfortunately got the boost for in my playthrough, so that was tough) and Solar Beam(which if it was in Dynamax, not Gigantamax, he would have absolutely destroyed all of its potential counters with one-turn Solar Beams alone), and this is not mentioning all of his other Pokémon, who are also pretty damn tough.

@@shawnzt4782 I think I know what you mean. Going in blind and feeling the build up towards your final battle against Leon (and actually being met with a decent challenge) was indeed a type of chills I have never before gotten from this franchise. This is probably rooted in what is putting so many older fans off from the franchise in recent years, but increasing focus on JRPG story mechanics in the sense that you're starting off from scratch and progressing through a character centric story to become the hero is personally the exact thing keeping me invested in the games. tbh I think a lot of these people could enjoy this too, it's just that the negative feedback loops they get from spending their days gossiping the games to death online inevitably sets them up for disappointment.

I guess gen 7's pose mechanic was a bit too underrated since it was left out. Located at the recycle plant is an NPC that knows what you've experienced and gets inspiration to teach you some different poses. It isn't just how you look in battle to another player as poses also change how you throw a Pokéball out in battle. There's a left-handed one, a carefree-esk throw, double hand underhand, even one where you jump and spin throw.

Videos like this are a perfect example of why I'm subscribed to you. Pretty much every single thing that you talked about was something that I had never known about, like the flowers differing for each island in Alola, or took for granted, such as the dynamic route layouts of Kalos.
I know that that was the point of this, but this video alone has given me a brand new appreciation even for games that I already loved and have a personal attachment to. I had forgotten all about Alola's side quests, and how impressed I was by the jump in graphics back then.
It also made me realize that I probably tried to play ORAS at a time that just wasn't right for me, and that if I were to try and go back to it now, I could fully appreciate it for what it is instead of what it isn't. I'll bet that it's the same for X&Y, since I basically breezed through it, without taking the time to appreciate the little things.

The most underrated part of Kalos is how many extra mechanics are in that game. There’s perhaps the most to do in that game that feels separate and unique from just the core battling mechanics but the community decided none of that is relevant. Berry farming, learning new roller blading techniques, upgrading the Maison, getting a high fashion score, collecting wild battle items, the fun third person shooter minigames, the list goes on and on. There’s countless extra mechanics that I’ve found myself getting more and more fond of as time goes on, especially as people ignore them more and more and playing newer games that have much less to do than X and Y.

And this is just me talking about Platinum, Diamond/Pearl also suffered from tons of other flaws, like the HP bar moving at a snail's pace, and the worst regional dex in the series.
That's not to say I think Platinum is by any means bad, in fact I think it's great, and one of the better games in the series overall. But the fanbase has a habit of giving it a bit more credit than it deserves, and overlooking all the aspects where it doesn't quite deliver.

      2. I want to see Pokémon interacting more, if they have conflicting personalities they might argue and have banter, like how in Animal Crossing 1 the villagers were mean, I want their interactions to be something like that.
      3. Add more food, I want to see different options for foods other than curry, it feels so limiting to what I can make, Marshmellows, Pokébeans, Poképuffs, just add 1 or 2 more options so I can do different minigames when making something.
      4. Remove 3/4 of all of the combinations of curry, I want quality over quantitiy in Camp, If I get more variety in expression of both the Pokémon and the Player, maybe if its spicy the player reacts in a painful look despire enjoying the Curry.
      5. The toys are great but I would prefer if there was a Bone, What if there was a laser, there are just a lot of possibilities you can do with it outside of BALL.
Basically all I want is for things to feel less repetitive, all the other stuff is a bonus, if I get more variety in something and it not feeling repetitive that easily fixes a lot of problems I had with it. These might seem too ambitious but these can be gradually added with each game.

As for everything else you pretty much hit the nail on the head for most of everything I want from a better Camp experience rather than getting bored of the same few things happening. The biggest thing underrated aspect of Gen V is really the version exclusives features that they offer, still being the most diverse and ambitious to date. The fact that B2/W2 was still able to expand on the already massive region that is Unova honestly adds to the replay-ability of the original B/W campaign even more, something incredibly underrated in sister games.
As a New Yorker I often wonder if Gen 5 were to expand into the Bronx/Staten Island areas of North West and South East Unova. They could make new version exclusive home towns add new version exclusive Gym leaders to give a completely version exclusive campaign for each game. That would be amazing.

unova were my favourite games. i still like sw/sh but the fact that galar sold more copies is baffling. The communities fuck up of not buying gen 5 and buying the worse games (They arent bad, just worse imo) left us with games people keep complaining about. game freak doesnt need to TRY anymore in order to sell a game. its like disney, where they dont give a shit about what they are making and make a ton of cash. community fucked up, bought worse games over the better ones, and now we are left with people complaining, yet consuming the products anyway

Unpopular opinion: I liked Pokestar Studios. I know some people don't and I can kinda understand, especially with the part of the game where you have to see a really bad movie, but other than that I think it's really enjoyable to star in a short film where there are different outcomes depending on how well you did during the filming. I really want something as directly positive as Pokemon Amie in Gen 6 to return.
Pokemon Camp almost got there, but you can't pet your Pokemon, just wave the bell toy or throw a ball-- although Pokemon Camp did let your Pokemon play with each other in real time, which I love. It's just that them petting your Pokemon is the most basic way of bonding, and I wish we had them back.

(I'm only now just playing gen 8, but ) I love the whole tournament based gym challenge of gen 8, idk, something about big spectacle battles and the world reacting to you beating the gyms seems fulfilling, like, just NPC's I walk by tell me to go beat the final gym for example, right as you walk up to it there are crowds surrounding it, its something vie always wanted, it reminds me of the anime like I watched as a kid, although there are a few rough edges that could be better, and quick side note, team yell may not have been the best team in my opinion, but I like how they are just trainers, trying to support someone from their rougher town, I think its quite nice to not have them be this evil team, just a good heart and wanting the best for Marnie, despite how annoying they are.

When he mentioned that gen 5 had the most optional areas in pokemon, it got me thinking about optional areas in other pokemon games, and more specifically how a surprisingly a huge chunk of hoenn consist of optional areas. its not even something i really think about when i play gen 3 but here they all are.
    optional areas
    :
    route 105
    route 107
    route 108
    route 117
    route 115
    route 123
    route 125
    route 129
    route 130 RS
    route 131 RS
    route 132
    route 133
    route 134
    trickmasters house
    mirrage tower E
    new mauville
    abandoned ship
    sealed champer + regi caves
    shoal cave
    sky pillar RS
    desert underpass E
    verdenturf town
    pacifidlog town
    safari zone
    trainer hill E
    Battle Frontier/battle tower

    more optional stuff in:
    route 104 small
    route 103
    route 116 small
    route 106
    route 109
    route 110
    route 111
    route 114 small
    route 119
    route 115
    petalburg woods
    granite cave
    fiery path
    mt. pyre
    abandoned ship
It also made me wonder why i didn't really think about Hoenn having so much optional stuff. But after some thinking, i think the reason why is another very overlooked thing about gen 3, spesifically the GBA versions of the games.
These games have been made to run very fast, the gba games are the only pokemon games to run at 60fps, and hoenn has the fastest running speed, biking speed and surfing speed as well. Hoenn doesn't have the gates that a lot of the other games use as loading screens either speeding things up even more. this all comes together and makes it so getting from one point to another in Hoenn takes way less time then any other game in the francise.
The designers of RSE knew this, and decided to make the region very interconnected with a lot of areas looping back into each other. Then when the game tells you to go a place you have to decide what path you want to take and if you want to explore a bit on the way. examples of this are the meteor falls to mt. Chimney, gym 4 to gym 5 and the gym 5 to gym 6 stretches with the gym 5 to gym 6 one being the biggest one where you have around 4 different paths you can take to get there, all with new stuff to explore.
Another piece of design that makes it so i don't think of these as optional areas is because of how much they tease them to you before you are able to explore them. the desert of route 111, new mauville and the waterfalls in meteor falls are all shown to you way before you are able to go there. the best example of this is the mr. briney's boat ride. which shows you all of the southern water routes, items and all + the abandoned ship. making it so you can't help going to check at least a couple of them out when you have the oportunity to.
So in conclusion i think one of the most overlooked things about RSE is how much the region and game is designed towards ease of exploration.
