The speed at which unindexed information is being added at FS is mind-bending. Indexing is not able to keep up. That we have access to the unindexed information is so exciting.
When I began Indexing, I came across a name of my husband’s last name that he was looking for. It wasn’t in his family but that got me even more excited to keep Indexing. It’s fun and I want to help him and others. Thank you or telling me about news papers because his Father does not know his Father. He grew up in a group home. He was told the lady was his aunt but we need to find proof.
I made my own file that “indexed” three entire towns of people, but the option to index these towns isn’t even available on the website. Why can’t people work on indexing what they care about to contribute?
I also checking a lot of images grouped by broad titles. Would be useful if we can enter details like names of districts, churches, years, so that of help who searching after us.
I'm very familiar with using Family Search Non-Indexed records and Catalog records. In fact, right now I am going page by page through the church parish records (baptisms, marriages and deaths) of 1838 in Italian for Prascorsano, Torino Province, Piemonte, Italy. I found these records by searching via Catalog for the place name "Italy,Torino" (Torino Province, Italy). I am transcribing the records in a notebook and doing comparisons of names in the records to try to match them up and find my family who were from there. I have already completed a similar project for the church parish records of Pertusio, Torino Province in Italian records for that comune in 1838 (first year they were in Italian rather than Latin for that comune). In the past I have done a lot of research in non-indexed probate records for various U.S. states and figured out ways to use the system in a way to facilitate finding records more quickly and efficiently. I did have a question in reference to searching by place name via "Images" rather than other methods of searching (such as lists under Non-Indexed or Catalog listings. Are the search results in "Images" different than what I would find by searching the other two ways and/or do you think it is more efficient to search via Catalog and/or Non-Indexed or is a search via Images more efficient and why or why not? Thanks for this information. I wasn't aware of this format for searching. I think I must have thought that "Images" meant things like photographs or other illustrations rather than printed material and/or documents.
Hey WhyChromosomemusic That's great that you’re using the “Search > Catalog” and all the fantastic work you are doing, thank you! To answer your question “Search > Images” is the only system that has every single image in one spot for the first time. (It has images from the Catalog, Browse Collections, Indexed Images, and all the images that used to be waiting to be put into the older systems). The Catalog has rich data input by professional catalogers, but it also takes a lot of time for professional catalogers to prep the images to be published in the catalog. John mentioned image capture is outpacing the efforts of getting images published into any of the systems. With this new system, instead of waiting for images to be professionally described, they are published immediately, then professionals work towards improving the descriptions of as many as possible. Hopefully, someday patrons can volunteer to help describe these books similar to volunteer indexing. Note some of the camera operators are volunteers and you may find results that a camera operator misdescribed because they are tasked to be fast and not look at every image in detail. Eventually a professional will improve the description to be more specific, but more often than this publication model is beneficial. Thanks for sharing your interpretation of what the word “Images” conveyed I will pass that on.
A few confusing things you might encounter are when multiple books were crammed on one roll of film to save on film costs years back. These results are being imported into the "Search > Images" system as entire rolls of film with multiple items and multiple descriptions (for example books from all other the word or a state mailed to the FamilySearch library all crammed onto one roll of film but not related). FamilySearch is actively dividing those groups into the natural groupings they would normally be captured as in with digital cameras. In many cases, computers have been taught how to detect these boundaries and divide the groups, but the computers do not know how to fix the descriptions in the "Image Group Information" sidebar, in these cases, you might run into a false positive result that has both a correct description and an incorrect description, the incorrect ones are being removed as fast as possible. Other times the group hasn't been divided and you need to scroll to the images you want (until it gets divided) as they are on the second or third book/item on the film. When something has been divided you will see a note about it at the top of the "Image Group Information" section of the images page as well as the option to see the film as captured in case there is something valuable at the front of the film.

I have a number of comuni in Italy to research their parish records and just in Italian (not even talking about the earlier ones in Latin) they are available on Family Search from 1838-1899. THAT should keep me busy for some time. Then there are the civil records from 1866-1920s or so -- some gaps in years but still a lot of great information. I am finding baptisms for people in 1838 AND finding death records for the parents in the 1860s and 1870s and marriage records for the children as well in the 1860s and 1870s.
I thank you for mentioning that you used the non-indexed records to search in records from Italy. After reading this I put in my husband's grandfather's city in Italy and found so many wonderful images and many people in his family tree! Amazing. And it was free! Another thing I have found in Family Search Non-Indexed records are that the microfilm titles and/or titles of the collection are not always exactly correct. I've found land records mixed in with probate records and records that were of different years than what the microfilm title said. I've learned to scan through records and jot down the "technical" information in notebooks. This also helps me when I want to explain to others how they can find the same information.
I have 2 questions. 1. If I happen to find an image and fully recognize what's in there, is there a way I can collaborate indexing it? 2. Can I collaborate with records I own and index them as well? Thank you
I worked with cleaning our county circuit court records for FamilySearch to film. I see the images on FS and they have no index but I have an every name index. I added a link in the wiki to where to find the index. I would love to match each name with the image. Are there people assigned to help individuals who have the index who want to connect that a name to FS images?
I think some of our ancestors in Africa were ignorant about keeping records by images, especially in parts of Uganda from 1896-to 1946. can I find some of the important images in different parts of Uganda especially western Uganda?
How do I volunteer to index records? Can I select myself, such as a geographical area, maybe Michigan or county there and maybe then a type of record like newspaper death notices and obits?

If a town no longer exists or has been renamed, it's best to search for records under the name of the town at the time the record was created, since that is the location on the record itself. Many resources are available that map the names and boundaries of places over time, either through maps, geographic coordinates, or concordances.
Amelia, are you referring to sharing records or sharing pictures with specific questions you need help answering? A great way to share images with information about family members is to share them as memories on FamilySearch.org, Ancestry.com, or other websites that allow others to see these images.
The new format of the Family Search website is atrocious. It used to be my go to website for a majority of my family research. Now, it's a hot mess and unusable.
