I don't remember when I first learned about Sleepers, but I learned it the easy way anf it gave me a better understanding of the phrase "don't judge a book by its cover." Now I just find it hilarious when someone cocky in a new or exotic car gets owned by something that looks ordinary.
I remember my introduction to sleepers quiet well. I had a 1980 Chevy Citation with a V6 (nowhere near fast of course) but got dusted by an early 1970's VW Beetle that looked like it was about to fall apart. I got him off the light pretty good, but noticed he kept gaining on me. I'm pushing redline in 3rd gear (70ish mph) I notice him pulling up beside me, bunny hopping the VW. I was like "NOPE, don't want any more of that." I dropped it into 4th gear, slowed down, tucked my tail between my legs and went home. I've NEVER second guessed a car since then. 🤣

The sleepers in this video are the trucks and Suv's and that one Civic I think it was against the Camaro. That one was awesome to watch haha.

In 1957 my dad's friend had a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria with the Continental Kit. It also had the police interceptor package under the hood. He would hang around the drag strip with a notebook and stopwatch. He would eventually invite someone's girl to leave with him and then wager pinkslips for the guy's car plus his girl. The locals knew what was about to happen. He was mature enough to let his victims keep the cars.

It doesn't take talent to drive something fast that's up to it's eyeballs in factory technology to the point your grandmother could go just as fast. Kudo's to the guy with the front wheel drive stick!
That’s what I think when I see new GTR owners. “He’s 16” any 16 year old can drive the GTR after 15 minutes. Figuring out the intricacies in a stick car is just so rewarding. I’m still perfecting it a few years into stick
Even though standards transmissions seem to going the way of the dodo bird, and are objectively faster, all others things being equal, automatic,DCT, etc just sap the legendary engagement one can have and the control over more aspects of the driving experience. I also come from the thinking that racing something you built with your own two hands rather than just your pocketbook to just buy someone else work, a turn-key, corporation version, earns the former many times more respect, at least from me.
Why stick class, still has record breakers. Still shift, but can't miss a gear like that anymore and still rope a hotrod in a 4 banger like guy did in the fwd civic..

I used to play with high school kids in their Escort GTs and Cavalier Z24s.
I had a 77 Volvo 264 that a friend and I dropped a warmed up 350 small block Chevy in.
It wasn’t the fastest or quickest, but it took a lot of people by surprise, especially when they would ask what was in it, I told them it was the stock V6!
Some believed me, but most didn’t.

Something wrong with that Veyron launch,WAY soft, they are A LOT harder off the line. Normally you expect exotics to be slow out the gate fast on top.

The only issue I have is alot of the exotic cars are not even built, yet are still fast. Yet take your own oem version of your vehicle & race one.
I honestly don’t even bother comparing a built car to a bought one. They’re just two different kinds of vehicles. I’ve seen these TH-cam dudes junkyard ls swap and turbo to like 700+ hp for the cost of a few grand and a bunch of spare time. You wanna buy 700hp engine then expect to drop like 15-20k just on the engine if you don’t know how to build it yourself. I wish I knew more cuz I really wanna build a 383 for my vette.
When you buy a car that comes stock with 700hp, most likely it's tuned and built for you. Any upgrades you do to it might cost you an arm since it comes with upgraded quality material already. When you buy a 150hp car, there's no where to go but up. Most car manufactures can build a stock 700hp car, some just choose to make room for the enthusiasts.

Sometimes i am thankful i grew up with JDM cars and roads that suck cause 350-400hp is well fast enough, not saying there aren't cars with more power but you had to work for it and still proabably couldn't use it....unlike the US and things were you can buy 200+hp addons at the local shop for nothing
