      Ironically manufacturing and especially automobile manufacturing has embraced supplier chains since learning how Toyota’s just in time manufacturing techniques in the 70’s. Henry Ford controlled every part of his vehicles when he started the assembly line manufacturing process in North America that revolutionized the inexpensive automobile. It’s funny how things come full circle. But my wife and I just ordered our new Tesla model 3. After doing the math even the model 3 will save us more money than buying a $26,000 car over the total yearly costs. We can wait because it’s like waiting for our third child to be born... 👶

    The thing that everyone misses, is Tesla Energy is going to be worth more than the Tesla Car, the energy side of things, is where Tesla will make the money, buying and storing energy in off peak, and selling it back and dispatching energy on demand in peak. If you buy a power wall and roof, and a car you will be part of the amount of energy potential he can dispatch, he will sell your battery and solar potential, and buy it back and at at lower cost. This guy is a genius.

    When you talk about the price of a car, you really have to look at the total costs. Imagine if you drive your electric car a lot (being an Uber driver for example). The amount of money you'll safe on gas in 6 years, could be MORE than $25000, so in a way you'll get the $25000 car for free!

    • @PhazonBlaxor
      @PhazonBlaxor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, in the case you do drive A LOT then you could save the $25K in gas within the lifetime of the car.

    • @swine13
      @swine13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But if we're doing that, we need to consider all the variables. What is wear and tear like on the electric engine? How expensive are the components to replace, and how often will you need to replace them? Who is paying for the electricity that you're charging the car with, and how much is that costing p.a?
      There's no benefit to saying we could save $25k a year if an avg of 24 of that is going to upkeep and maintenance (not saying it would, just exaggerating to make the point)

    • @Dimitri88888888
      @Dimitri88888888 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @deathpony698
      @deathpony698 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@swine13 I'm not sure about the electric motor lifespan, but its probably better than having to replace a head gasket or a timing belt on an ICE car around 100k miles. On EVs with regenerative breaking you end up using the disk breaks a lot less and they last much longer. Also, no oil changes or oil filters.

    • @PhazonBlaxor
      @PhazonBlaxor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@swine13 I don't know about maintenance, but driving with electricity is cheaper than with gasoline. So who's paying for the electricity? The driver of course, and they still save a lot.

    I would like to see a critical analysis of how much petroleum products--whether fuel or synthetic materials--are used in the whole supply chain for a typical Tesla car. That would show carbon footprint for resource extraction, transport, refinement etc. all along the chain to the finished product, including maintenance and recycling of batteries and parts over the expected life of the car. This would give us a better overall picture of the impact on the environment and allow us to see if any of this is really making a difference vis a vis climate change.

    1 KwH = 64 cents for me since I have a pool and spa that need to be filtered. Electricity is so much more expensive in socal, where areas are most densely populated....unless I install 55 solar panel in an area that sees almost 335+ clear days a year with perfect angle on my roof, I cannot even break even on my usage. I keep the upstairs at 79 degrees and don't even turn on the downstairs thermostat. Electric bill is still $1.1k per month in the summer, even with filtering pool and spa for less hours than recommended and during night during non-peak hours. Plus, no one can buy a base Tesla, as it's terrible and you get charged like $2k for paint and $7k for auto drive and all the other upsells...it's ridiculous to call it a fucking $25k car. My sister spent $85k on hey model X or Y (whatever the SUV was) and my other sister spent 90k on her tesla, then had to pay 2.5k for the installation for charging. I still don't see the damn profitability yet of Teslas, and I don't see most of the increasingly poor people in the US investing in electric cars that cost more over the llfe of the car even where electricity is relatively cheap, as gas is relatively cheap there too (I've seen places in midwest have over $2 a gallon price difference from where I live, when gas hit $1.80 or so for them recently.). This isn't launching what was a $400 phone into a new market, beating all the competition like iphones or ipads, something anyone could save up for...this is going to be a wealthy, virtue signaling car.
    I still admire what they are trying to do and once they get batteries and solar cells that can hold the energy I need to break even and not make my entire roof look fugly as hell, I will drop the (current quote of 65k for just panels installed) for getting solar in my home. Even those I am sure will break and need maintenance not covered by the warranty. This is why I don't want an electric car that is hard to fix...already hard enough to fix any cars with my dad past 2008 or so, as there are sensors of fucking sensors for a component and they encase the fuckin engine in a giant block of steel so you can't fix without voiding your warranty, it all seems stupid to me. My parents are considered upper class (barely) and live in a neighborhood where the average house is over a mill with no debt and 5-7x the value of that in investments and retirement and I live in a larger house than them in the same community but don't have that large of a nest egg yet. My dad is still fixing his fucking 94 astro van while the neighbors have always hated that he doesn't have a nicer car. I get the same thing with my dirt cheap 2004 cavalier coupe LS which still is running and is super easy to fix and my parents bought it new for me (I was so mad they chose a car without consulting me on whether i would like it at the time) to commute to the university I went to after high school. The thing fucking still runs like a champ and gets over 32 miles to the gallon. I dunno why people spend so much money on leasing new cars and getting new crap they don't need...it baffles me. Might be a reason why I've watch so many neighbors get foreclosed on and even have capitalized on that misfortune twice when buying homes in my early 20s, albeit both times were a pain in the ass when dealing with lying scammers. Point is, if you aren't saving >40% of your post-tax income (only applies to those who CAN do this and choose not to) and investing that elsewhere, you are seriously playing the game of life wrong. Stop buying new crap and throwing out old crap...learn to fix the old crap. Buy used shit off ebay and fix it....I am telling you it will have much more value and most likely betttr quality if it is from 30+ years ago anyways (this does not apply to technical advancements). BTW, I don't mean to come off as a dick but
    PS: I just reread this and I come off as a spoiled dick, but I will tell you all one thing....I stopped caring about money at age 26 when I realized I had enough to live comfortably and to not have to worry about money anymore. The whole pursuit of money for me wasn't for greed, but it was just to make it so I didn't have to literally think about or worry about money anymore. After working hard and getting some money from stock options, I ended up becoming extremely depressed because I felt the urge to keep investing to get more money and so on, and I was like, "what's the point? I grew up happily and frugally in my family, never going out to eat and always being jealous of what all my friends and people around me had. I mean for luck when we traveled my parents literally were packing crackers, bean dip, and cheese whiz for our road trips as children, and I was perfectly happy. You wake up with a scary truth the more you own....you eventually die and lose it all...and then even if u are some great person who is remembered for ages, eventually we will be extinct and no one will utter our names. The "ego" part of amassing wealth hits pretty hard when you have something to lose, and this hit me really hard many nights with horrible panic attacks in my 20s when I thought everything was perfect in life, which is why I don't understand these billionaires at all.

    I think that electrical cars won't be ubiquitous until the charging will be fast enough such as filling the tank since 99% of people who own cars have no where to charge at home. So gas stations can covert to charging.

    It would be cool if traditional batteries would get better over time. Like if double A's could store more charge every year and such. How come that isn't so?

    I'm quite excited about this. Musk seems to be one of those few, rare individuals who can keep his eye on the ball, with seemingly limitless energy of his own to make it all happen. I pay little attention to what most other car makers promise, and the likes of GM can be downright toxic to any idea of real progress.

      In 2014, Tesla announced their goal to have production capacity of 500k cars per year in the US by 2020. A now 6 year old estimate.
      Tesla Q2 2020 earnings report stated current production capacity of 490k and on track for production capacity of 590k this year.
      Tesla have a track record for delivering what they say they will deliver.

    Tesla Delivered the Y ahead of schedule. In both factories. They do not have to wait on vendors. They are making their own machines. That is why they bought HiBar. And the changes they are making in the manufacturing of the actual cars structure? Is going to reduce their unit cost by 30%. As an engineer myself I understand what they have achieved. If I were the head of a car or battery company today? Id be VERY nervous. Oh and btw Tesla's current battery costs are estimated around $123 by private engineering analysis. This new format and battery structure combined with the other things? The cost to manufacture this car is going to be less than $10k. And consider that in 2 years Full self driving is probably going to be a $10k premium on the rest of the lineup? You are looking at a car without it being $15k or so. Giga India.

    Thought 💭, and please comment. If they just produced the top of the line battery 🔋 and made battery packs of various sizes, the cars receiving the smaller pack size could be made lighter and therefore cheaper, resulting in increased range and performance. Would this approach not be better? It’s a different way to go about things.

    The days of Tesla being behind schedule are behind us. They were ahead of schedule both with the Shanghai factory and the Model Y production ramp. Get ready for stuff that they promised on Battery Day to be delivered incrementally and ahead of schedule. They're probably sandbagging on the timeline to avoid the Osborne Effect.

    The $25.000 Tesla can be produced today. Tesla already uses LifePo4 batteries in Model3 China. The price is $60.00 per kW and as the Panasonic batteries cost $150.00 per kW they could easily make a smaller lighter Tesla Model 2 at $25.000 and that is what they will do but in three years time Elon time BTW so maybe it will take 5 years. LifePo4 is the future for all small cars and it’s here now. The $25.000 will not be FSD as standard as always it will be a expensive option. Anyway very impressive.
