Theres no one better at teaching melodic soloing than Robbie Calvo. His courses on truefire completely changed by approach to soloing. Total gamechanger if you're stuck playing scales and you really want to play over the chords with complete control. Awesome lesson here too!!! Thanks.
Holy Cow!! 60% of that material (maybe more if I'm honest) was over my head but I feel inspired to dive into this video again and again until I get it. Brett, man, you are really hitting some home runs with these videos lately; Trapp, Congilio, and now Calvo are dishing out some real pearls. I know I sound like a broken record lately in the comment section but you really are doing a great job man! I've already bought your Caged Unleashed course (slowly making my way through it) and it's super helpful! Thanks for all you do!! God bless!!
That "fancy chord for instance was just a minute seventh in root D (or root 4) position. If you don't know your arpeggios that is a must as they are diatonic to the chord (contain all the notes of the chord)
OMG!!!! The lightbulb just came on guys . ...... thank you so much!! It's so weird how you can study something for a while and just not quite get it, then you see it from a different angle and everything clicks into place. Awesome!
To get this knowledge and insight for free is amazing. Gotta love the internet sometimes. I will go and find something by you both to buy to pay you back. Thank you so much.
For me the difference between this video and the last Guthrie Trapp video is that Robbie Calvo can articulate his ideas in a clear and concise way . Thanks so much !!!!
I think one of the most important topics you guys touched on is so many of us “know” our abc’s. Few of us know how to write a good “musical sentence” on to paragraphs and chapters. I love Robbie’s playing and teaching. Thanks for elevating this Bret! Lately my practice has been exactly what Robbie suggests. I like using the EHX Freeze pedal to practice modes against the chords. Well done guys!
Robbie Calvo is easily the nicest, kindest musical genius in the business!! The man does not have a mean nor untalented bone in his body and will lift anyone's spirit.......musically as well as humanly!! In Robbie I most definitely trust!! Jim C.
Man! I have to agree with some of these other guys! You have really been bringing the heat with some of the players you've shown us. Guthrie Trapp, Robbie Calvo, etc. Wow. This one is great because Robbie really does bring order out of the chaos that is modal playing. This has really opened some doors for me! Thanks!
Brett, you're definitely on the right track with these videos digging deep into playing over the chords and weaving everything together. I don't know how you do it, but you make it pulling us into the theory very educational and a ton of fun with all the different talent and perspectives. Best from Texas!
Yo Bret! This is the best lesson on Modes yet! You're doing a fantastic job getting these guys like Guthrie and now Robbie to participate in your channel. This was really the best lesson on modes and he patiently covered it all, that's fantastic. great job man.
Loved this lesson, Brett... its style reminded me a bit of those "The captain meets..." videos that Lee Anderton does on his shop's channel. Plenty of conversation... no rush... very easy to watch and enjoy this one. Well done.
This is exactly what I’ve been practicing for months.try to learn 3or4 different voiceings for each chord.arpeggios up and down the neck.and the scale up n down.really helpful
This lesson is awesome- finally getting some time to sit down and study this. It's taking me awhile cuz my family is driving me nuts but it's all good. lol. Thanks Papa!
Thanks for sharing this great info. I've always tried to target every chord change. I really like the idea of targeting the tonal center only as it sounds so fluid! At least when Robbie does it.
Brett, Thank you so much for introducing this diamond of knowledge to the fan-base. I learned so much from this video. I've watched it 2.5 Xs and amazed at all the BIG & little nuggets of knowledge Robbie put into this 1hr sitdown. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
I've been following from the start of your caged rage the from the start of your Nashville days and I'm glad I did , I was totally bored of your last channel great reinventing your self Brett and thanks for bringing all these dudes in ..!!!!
Two of my all time favorite guitar guys in the same video... Winning!!!! This was awesome and unlocked some of the concepts I have had a hard time grasping. This teaching style is brilliant!...Thanks immensely...!!! Can't wait to get home and review this with guitar in hand
I love this - and I love this guy. Brett, you are already our boy and all, but you go bringing your killer-chop friends around and our minds are blown - wide open! He's delightful and this view is so very helpful. There are some, like Rick Beato, who point out that there might be better ways to contain and use the information we think of as CAGED. Rick's perspective is much closer to this modal view. He has a great exercise he got from a teacher early on: practice that position 1 of the major scale, then, follow with that major penta position. Wash. Rinse.Repeat. Do that for each position. So, in A, as above, when you go to 2nd position of the major scale, you are starting on B, so there's your minor ii chord (your Dorian). On and on, just as Robbie is describing. I think Rick goes on to say it, but if he doesn't he says it plenty: now, go focus on the arpeggios in those positions. Again, paying attention to the major scale position AND the corresponding penta. Learn those roots, 3rds, 5ths. Now, in CAGE system's defense, you will still "see" those open chord shapes. All of it together becomes more visual as the comfort level begins. And it really does help you hear the sound of the modes.
1. Beautiful playing 2. Great lesson. 3. I wasn't watching at first, just listening and it was like Boromir teaching guitar! Which made it even more awesome haha
Awesome Awesome ... l’ve have a few of Robbie’s TrueFire courses, they’re great, but it’s also great to learn stuff in this more informal chatty setting. Cheers.
This guy explains it correctly so you can easily understand it. Thanks Brett for having Robbie Calvo on your channel. I seen you loving this killer lesson too. Lol!
If there is a more tasteful player than Robbie I haven't heard them. I bought "Modal Alchemist" and the three "Power Play' (Min, Maj, Dom) instructional videos from Truefire, they are a great learning resource. Robbie is a great teacher and I would highly recommend his courses. No I am not his mom. lol
Thanks again for another bada$$ video. Appreciate the fact that you try so hard o help others better their playing. You're a good dude, Keep it up. Totally digging that Tele's vibe !
At 17:00, I get excited because Robbie says each mode has a characteristic note, wow. I didn't realize that perspective. I want more...but Brett takes us back to the pentatonic....we already got the pentatonic. C'mon Papa, it's time! Lol
Robbie love your courses on TF a little off topic but with regards to the Helix and the whole subject of Amp and effect modeling, Where I get stumped is what to play through, What do you play through, When you perform do you plug Directly into the PA? Do you use the looping device on the Helix or do you use a seperate looper. I was fortunate to have modes introduced to me early on, to me it makes everything easier Thank you!
Great video, lots of excellent insights, he has a very calming voice, perfect for a teacher! A question, why does harmonizing the major scale create A major 7, and not just A major?
Major 7,is just an extension of the triad.1-3-5-the 7 is major because it’s a major scale of course.you can keep building major 9,major 11,major 13.you can extend every chord in the key
Hi Tim, It creates both...when you harmonize the major scale you can build 3 note chords called triads Root, 3rd, 5th) or 4 note chords, which are called 7th chords (because you've added the 7th (Root, 3rd , 5th 7th).
This was very helpful and enjoyable. Thanks very much for putting these interviews together. Robbie is great. I own most of his courses and have learned more from him than any other instructor.
Hi Dean, Thanks for the Question...when I solo over blues I use a combination of Dominant arpeggios mixed with chromatics, the Blues scale and double-stop ideas...
Hey Bret. Here's a suggestion: I see a lot of videos and the one thing that I notice is not many really get the camera angle above the players first knuckle so you can actually see where the finger tips are all that well. It leaves a lot to guesswork and for those who don't already know all the modes etc, and perhaps don't have their ears tuned up yet, this would be a valuable improvement. You just need to raise the height of the camera so the line of sight to the tips of the players fingers is clearly visible. Anyway, thanks again for a great video, you're a huge asset to the guitar community (and as an aside, I'd love to hear some of the music you may have done in bands past or present).
Great suggestions. Thanks for checking out the vids! Lots more coming soon. I'll post some stuff of mine when I get around to finishing some of it! Thanks for tuning in!
I was taught to change modes for each chord, when playing A chord use Ioian, when playing C#m play Phrygian, etc. and when playing over each chord and within each mode your in you should Target chord tones.
Regarding that "fancy chord" which is a MIn 7 in root d or root 4 position , while it's bread and butter for us jazz players i find most rock player have never learnt root 4 chords or different chord voicings around the neck. This video is prett good I say
Robbie or Papastache, as someone well versed in modes, but limited in practice time Playing and practicing over progressions, I know there could be an infinite number of progressions and grooves, but could you suggest some progressions for example I IV V for sure with a swing feel, but how could one cover all the bases in General, Is there a " most common" group of progressions and grooves to consistently practice, Thank you again.
Troy Garrity check out any Dead song or southern rock tunes, mixolydian is a very common progression, which is starting on the 5th of the tonic. So if the key is A, a simple progression would be a V, IV, I or E, D,A. If you resolve to E and target the the E in your soloing it become mixolydian, all while playing A major.
@@G_String Yes I understand that as well as the other six modes of the diatonic major scale, but THANKS for the reply, I was looking for say some the most common chord progressions (songs) and grooves to go to for practice. The Dead for sure, I actually found a nice group in Robbies new course about songwriting,
@@Troy1g Thank you for working on the Songwriting course. Modal Expose or Chord Moves and Grooves on Truefire would give you a lot...plus I did a course called 30 Modal Progressions as well. If you analyze most popular songs over the ages you'll find they all have a tonal center. The video on TH-cam by Axis Of Awesome is a good example of this.
What?! Where's the Revstar?!... Then again, Robbie could make any guitar sing... His TF stuff is amazing, excellent instructional content... I think the course he's talking about @ 21:00 in is called 'The Power of Five' and I definitely recommend that one... Jon Lewis instructing is what Robbie does. Guthrie is a working musician who’s just now getting into teaching.
Robbie has been teaching a long time! Both are great at what they do.

A question, why does harmonizing the major scale create A major 7, and not just A major?
Major 7,is just an extension of the triad.1-3-5-the 7 is major because it’s a major scale of course.you can keep building major 9,major 11,major 13.you can extend every chord in the key
You don’t have to make it a seven,it’s totally up to you, just a way to get different sounds.spice it up
Hi Tim, It creates both...when you harmonize the major scale you can build 3 note chords called triads Root, 3rd, 5th) or 4 note chords, which are called 7th chords (because you've added the 7th (Root, 3rd , 5th 7th).
