Great David Bowie cover. I love the original, but I prefer to listen this version. So many little Kurt nuances like the yodel/vocal breaks. One of my favorite MTV Unplugged performances too.

  • @MedTechMetal

Kurt's guitar was an electric acoustic. From what I remember he wanted to use a particular amp that was his " Linus blanket". I think his melancholy appearance on this song was his nervousness because they messed it up a bunch of times in rehearsal.

Gotta respectfully disagree on the electric guitar sound. I feel that it adds to the melancholy of Nirvanas cover. It felt as though that was the Nirvana “flavor” that made the song unique (along with Cobain’s particular vocals). I listen to all three versions of this song and idk which is better. They’re all great imo

Maybe the reason that guitar sounds so familiar is because its a David Bowie song.

Kurt liked ambiguity in lyrics this is probably one of the reason he covered this song. Even though it's sad thinking of his passing I enjoyed that it felt he was always himself and had true love for music.

“I was simply blown away when I found that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and have always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering ‘The Man Who Sold the World’” and that “it was a good straight forward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking with him would have been real cool.”
    -David Bowie

Unplugged show is amazing, but sad at the same time. The set looked like a funeral. Where did you sleep last night is the most emotional performance ever. Kurt was in major drug withdrawals at the time.

  • @antivanti
    @antivanti หลายเดือนก่อน +7

This is months before he left us. One of the last real performances. And in several songs you really get a feel for where his headspace was at. This one and Where Did You Sleep Last Night are especially heartbreaking

Seriously? They played the West Coast leg of the In Utero tour and then half of the European leg before they canceled the tour, all *after* this performance. Yes, it was three or four months before he died, but they played hundreds of songs live in front of hundreds of thousands of people between this performance and his death.

I’ve been a nirvana fan since I was 6 years old. I’m 38 now. It’s a lot to take in when u watched them as a kid and how big they were at one time and then how they went away so fast. They truly had a big impact on my life and I can’t really explain it. Kurt was truly a legend and rare. There’s a lot to take in about the whole situation. I enjoy your nirvana videos thank you for it!

Yeah, Kurt's Martin guitar has electric pickups, so he presses a pedal to switch between electric and acoustic. Love your reactions to Nirvana. Would love to see you react to Come As You Are Unplugged next. I love his voice in that. Or the Heart-Shaped Box music video (original, not the director's cut...but I like aspects of both). Cheers.

You should listen to the original version by David Bowie, then Midge Ure’s version and you can kind of take away different feelings from the same song.
The original in the 70’s, Midge Ure’s in the 80’s then Nirvana’s in the 90’s all feel different while being the same song, and are all haunting in different ways

Yeah, Nirvana is always rough to hear nowadays. Back in the 90s when he was on top, he was utterly mesmerizing to watch and hear. I can’t relay how devastating his death was. I suppose I was 14 at the time I had nightmares for weeks afterward after his death. It’s funny, I never paid attention to the lyrics, back then it didn’t matter. It was the sound. To hear these reaction videos going into the lyrics to me is strange. I think it’s about the feeling he puts into the words and of course, his passing a few months later, that makes this song, particularly rough to listen to.

This song is in the key of C# minor, another famous piece in this same key is Beethoven's Moonlight sonata.

I think trying to interpret and guess Kurt's state of mind at a glance just from seeing this kind footage, is pointless, we all have millions of things on our minds at all times and in this case Kurt and the rest of the band were all more focused on the performance.

  • @wadew3623

Yeah, a dark secret about guitar is that acoustic guitars can actually sound good sometimes when you add distortion. It doesn't seem to be talked about that much, even by guitarists. One problem, though, is that it's harder to control feedback because acoustic guitars tend to have more natural resonance than standard electric ones.

Kurt was in a lot of physical pain from chronic pancreatitis, as I understand things. I believe that's what drove him to heroin and been a large contributor to why he committed suicide. The other theory is Courtney Love had him murdered because he was going to leave her.
