    I have enjoyed a modified version of this in the past. Today, after watching some of the recent hop, I was talking to a friend who was having a hard time. While talking to her I cut colored cardstock for slimline cards and decided to do this with the leftovers from that, which will be cut down and put on cards. I did inks, and got through 17, and then stamps. After that I was REALLY happy with the backgrounds, and I now want to be intentional and finish them. They are going to become church birthday cards. Thank you for all the inspiration you provide!!

    Rose at Journal in Time told me about you and I think I’ve found a kindred spirit! I just realized this was 8 yrs ago. You are still relevant and help us left/right brained people! I can’t wait to try this! I think it’s really going to give me some freedom as I explore my creative side and learn more about my style! Thanks!

    Thank you! I don't stress in my art journal but I do with gifts. It took me 18 months to gift the 3 altered books I made. That is 8 months longer than I gave myself.
    I totally adapted your set of rules to suit my needs.
    30 minutes to pull together supplies and fie cut 20 labels I wanted as the card front plus 20 smaller labels for the sentiments.
    15 minutes paint - in my case spraying liquid water colors. I had extra time and realized I hadn't cut card bases. I don't have a paper trimmer. Score 10 sheets of card stock and start to cut.
    15 minutes - finish cutting then fold card bases. Glue down the painted die cut labels and add a collage element. Run out of time.
    15 minutes - finish last task and add a focal image. Run out of time.
    15 minutes - finish last task
    10 minutes - stamp sentiments. Attach. Go over each card. Be happy with results. Gift complete

    I love this video, Journaling By 5s. I teacher High school Art levels 1-5. my levels 4&5 are so serious about their art because they are trying to get excepted to art schools. They are stressing themselves out. which is not what art is about. So, I stopped class. and forced them to watch your video and we have been doing your steps 15mins a day at the beginning of class. The first week was tough, but now they LOVING IT. And I have to say their other artwork has improved because of your art therapy. That's what I call it. The kids love your video's they say you and I are twins in personality and weirdness. Which I feel is a complete compliment. So thank you for your awesome videos. They make me happy.

    I started mixed media and art journaling 2 and a half years ago. I spent ages trying to learn all the techniques as I'd not held a brush in my hand for 45 years! I still had "white page" fear, so last week, I decided to try this journalling by 5's, and I now have my very first completed art journal - I took longer than the set time, but the linear progression (as an ex-admin person) was ideal for me to follow. Thanks once again for sharing Shannon!

    This method really helped me dive into my art journal! I slabbed paint on 20 blank pages, and it was great! I didn't complete the entire 5 steps, but I'm now slowly creating pieces with each painted page. It gave me a great head start! Thanks for sharing!

    We have a lot in common. I was the Accounts Receivable person for the local health department in Nashville for about 20 yrs. I retired after almost 30 yrs there. I have always loved being crafty but until this past January it was hand needle work, crochet and knitting, beading and jewelry making. I also painted wooden and plaster Christmas ornaments. Then, while watching some TH-cam Christmas ornaments videos I happened upon Crafting Vicky as a suggestion from TH-cam and the rest is history. I fell in love with junk journals, glue books, different ways to make cards and ATCs. Now our poor living room is full of boxes full of cardboard, tissue and paper towel rolls, a ton of paints and brushes, glues, etc, etc. I am having so much fun with mixed media and collage.

  • @pjp9383

    Dear Shannon, I've spent 3 days looking on TH-cam for art journal challenges that have "5" in the name ... found several others that I'd also participated in somewhat (5x7, Take 5, etc) but could not seem to find this one! Didn't help that (sorry!) I couldn't remember who had originated it. Was about to give up, when I finally came across a video from someone who took part, and rushed to watch this video again.
    The reason for the urgency? I came across 2 almost completed "travellers notebook" style journals that I'd started working on years ago! I wanted to finish them but couldn't remember what came next. One of them only has the final prompt to do, thank God! I think I'll allow myself the luxury of doodling and mark making one page at a time, with my morning coffee. (Though I might do another round or two of stamping / stencilling, paint or spray inks, using the time limits, to make the layering effect even more juicy.)
    If I recall correctly, for the first few layers I separated the pages in the journal, and placed them all around a card table, then worked around the table for each layer, and by the time I got to the end, was able to flip them over and do the backs. This eliminated the issues with pages sticking together. Then I figured out which order to place the pages back in the journal, and added in my words and images. The travellers notebook style worked really well for this!
    It may have been 8 years since you originated this idea, but I wanted you to know that it's still providing inspiration... ❤💜💙

    Love the "creativity dump" idea! As a strong left-brain, I have been struggling with art journaling for months. Very helpful, thank you. (And, "5" has been my favorite number for as long as I can remember; I think I can get on board with this :) I laughed out loud many times during this video, but you really got me when you said, "Bless their hearts" so perfectly. You sound like a fellow GRITS (Girls Raised In The South).

      @carolmelancon Do you still do artwork? Just curious about how long "left brains" stick with something like this. I'm a "right brain" thinker, so this is fun for me. But, I can't think of one "left brain" thing that I would consider fun or stick with for very long. 🤔
      BTW, there's a hilarious video by Jeanne Roberts regarding sending her husband, whom she literally calls "left brain" to the store. Your comment reminded me of that video. Totally worth watching! 🙂

    This is so perfect for someone like me who is a total virgin when it comes to journaling & mixed media. I have completed the first step & I can't believe how much I have learned already. I am filming but I'm not sure if I am confident enough to post. We'll see when I finish.
    My materials are extremely limited so that is going to be very interesting. Eg I don't have inks so I used crayons on some pages. I also have no magazine pics or words. Only newspapers & I make my own embellishments.
    The time limit is SO GREAT. I ran out of time & ended up with a blank page but that's ok. I love that you don't know what any of the final pages will end up looking like.
    Thankyou Shannon for this great challenge. To all noobies like me: It's a perfect way to learn! MCC;)

      MissCrafty Chris Oooohhh that makes me so happy! I love that you're doing the best you can with what you've got. So yeah...you win!!

    Absolutely loving this Shannon! I had joined the 2014 Document life journal because of the prompts but immediately got overwhelmed with the pace and extent that others were posting on their journal pages...I considered myself failed before even starting. Lame I know! I used to participate in Swapbot online which was great on creating to please others esp on deadlines...I believe I created some of my best work during those times. I'm a huge hoarder of ephemera and have a large stash of art supplies plus a great studio to play in..guess what I'm really wanting to say is this is the perfect solution for me to use what I have and enjoy creating without worrying it won't measure up! I am vowing to do this and will let you know the outcome :) thanks for the great instructions and tips. Beth

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beth McDonald Okay Beth, I'm going to hold you to that! I expect to hear from you when you get started :) Did you happen to see the last video I did that wrapped up my DLP planner for 2014? I started off great but after a few weeks I got behind and nearly gave up on it. I hated to do that because I really liked their prompts (nice and concrete) so I made a list of the weekly prompts in my journal then worked on them whenever I felt like it. I'll probably do that for DLP 2015 as well since it ended up working out great for me and it sounds like it might be something that would work for you. You can watch the video here if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/h-XAP2bnfY8/w-d-xo.html

    Ahh, "trick your self into not over thinking", this is brilliant. Left brain working with the right brain, so simple and yet feels complicated. Guess I'm more right brain because I would have a really hard time, (time) with stopping at the limit. Oh my goodness, I'm going to try this! And thanks for flipping through your book. I love those pages you did! It's more than just getting both sides of the brain to work together. I see you finding stuff you like that are not necessarily related and then putting them together. It's not only technique and discipline with creativity, but it's also self discovery! Oh, and if I were you, I'd not do another thing to those beautiful pages but instead write what additions or changes you just mentioned on the empty page next to the art page. Wow, just loving this. Thank you so much for sharing this idea.

  • @tnderhrt23

    Shannon, I am one of those left brainers that is tormented by my little inner critic...so your exercize seems ideal for me. I am also very new to mixed media. So I just began the Journaling by 5s process...I have never done any timed work at all. In 15 minutes I managed to get paint onto 15 sheets, only. And true to form, I carried on and finished my last 5 sheets, so I cheated. Yes, it's true, and I am generally not a cheater. I have watched a ton of TH-cam videos and I am most disappointed in myself. But I am not giving up...The idea really appeals to me so I will keep trying...Thank you for sharing your process and for your challenge!

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      tnderhrt23 Oh don't be too hard on yourself, it's your first go at it! If you can't stop yourself from cheating, give yourself a little grace for this go round. Then when you're done if you see that it was helpful or something you enjoyed doing, try it again. Do another round and next time...don't cheat! You'll get more out of it if you follow the rules as written. But if you don't...you'll still get something out if it and something is better than nothing! Full steam ahead!!

  • @ancientmum
    @ancientmum 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh, and I have to say that you are just so inspirational because of your happy talk. You actually have a wonderful relationship with your creations. It has to bring out that happy for you and that's what it is all about, I think so anyway. We find our happy with in our selves and then share it, where as we somehow get the idea that our happy is always out there somewhere in someone else or something else. That's what you do, find your happy and share it. You're definitely on to something amazing here. I do hope you continue.

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ancientmum I'm right there with ya! I think so many times we miss out on opportunities for happiness because we overlook the little things. We want the BIG happy and we forget that if you string enough little happies together they're one big happy! ... That made perfect sense in my head but sounds totally insane now that I've typed it out. Hope you get the idea :)

    Stopped by Aaron Brothers: they still have the Buy One Get Two Free deals on sketchbooks. The 6" x 9" Mixed Media journals ("Skills" line) are fabulous. That paper takes a beating and you can still work on both sides. Sharpies don't bleed through. Watercolor washes on it nicely. I just came home with three for $6.99. AMAZING. Run right down there for this great deal for Mixed Media! They work with everything.
    I'm going to take the 20 JB5 pages out of my sketchbook and switch them out with one of the new ones to give them their dedicated book and carry on with experimenting my way through ArtJournaling. I love the TH-cam shares!
    I got the Skills line watercolor paper to try last December, 140 lb. Same price. It got crumbly when I tried it with gouache wash and is like blotter paper. That said, 140 lb. paper is a great surface for other things. I used it on a boiled book experiment yesterday and it was nice.

    OK, change of plans. It is going to rain for the next 3 days so as of 11:15 pm we are headed north tomorrow to Dallas in the morning.
    A timer! You want me to turn on a timer? LOL They help with cleaning too. I love to get lost in my art with no time limits but this is on cool book.
    Oh the first thing that came to my mind, for the first page you said it needed a focal point I thought a mermaid or a woman with butterfly wings. Really a fun fun book. TFS

    Shannon, you said in one of your videos that you have a journal where you put your "excess" paints. Well I attend a Saturday morning Art Class and after hearing your video I said to myself you are right. So I bought a art journal to class and when the class ended, I put all my leftover acrylic paints in my made up art journal! I will try this for a few weeks and then will ask the class to do put their leftover paints in my art journal. There are 15 people in my class! Lots of paint! Thank you for the tip.

(Paint and quilting in the same area, does not work!) I have taken notes and will revisit this video. I have been writing quotes and brief ideas all in a new journal, like "dreams" when viewing videos, and going through my day. So, may pull those out at when doing "focal" point, or writing step.....Or chuck it for a later date if I choose to do a page at a time....

    Well i have always believed that children need rules and structure in there lives to help them stay on the right path. we as artist and craftsmen sometimes find ourselves looking thru the eyes of children in order to grasp the concept we are trying so hard to hang on to. so i'm thinking that there is great merit in your idea. If nothing else we all get plain ole stuck sometimes on a project and these little rules might be what it takes to break thru the artist block! You know? I loved watching it and hearing your take on things! Genius,sheer Genius!!!

    BwahHaha!..."if you're left-brained truly, you're going to follow that 15 minutes because you follow the rules"...LMFAO. Oh how I do relate to this video. I am still struggling even after journaling for 2 years now because I just don't think from my very narrow creative side "artistically" *said in my snooty high falootin' voice*. I over-analyze everything and very rarely work intuitively. I would say that I'm going to give this a go, but the cogs and wheels are already turning trying to figure out how to micromanage your idea (ha!). Every step you went through it was like you were speaking directly to me (ie: "don't flip through your book and try to pick out things for each page")...it's like you knew I was gonna' do that! Great exercise, Shannon!!

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL That's because I'm equally right and left brained! You can either grab a blank journal and give this a try or sit there and think about it some more until you've talked yourself out of it! ;)

      The only part of this equation that doesn't work with my brain is the 15 minutes per step cause my brain doesn't think that quickly. I get under pressure and it shuts down! But I do love the steps and have pinned them.

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dolores J. Rush Having your brain shut down and not being able to think is the whole idea! That 15 minute time limit is the key to the whole thing...you don't have enough time to think, plan, or second guess yourself. You're forced to run on instinct and see what happens.

    OK, Shannon I gave this a try. How do you keep the pages from sticking together? Especially when you collage. Mine stuck together and some of the paper would tear when I turned the pages. I know this is a dumb question, but I really want this to work. Help!

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Debbie Harris Couple of options. Keep some sheets of waxed paper on hand to slip between the pages while you work. Or what I did is just put a dab of glue in the middle of the images and stuck them down where I wanted them. Just enough glue to hold them in place. Then you can go back later (when you're not racing the clock!) to secure them down properly.

    • @debbieharris3621
      @debbieharris3621 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shannon Green Thanks. I was trying to do it all in the time limit (does that make me a Left Brain Person?) and just couldn't do it. I will try your "drop of glue" method.

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Debbie Harris Sounds like you might be fussing over each page a little too much. You have 45 seconds per page which is actually plenty of time to slap on some paint, glue down a piece of paper, stamp an image, etc. If you fuss over getting the paint just right or positioning the image in just the right spot or choosing the perfect place for a stamped image, etc. you will most definitely run out of time. The whole point of the time limit isn't to stress you out :) It's to make you stop over-thinking every little detail. Leave your brain out of it. Don't think, just do.

      Wow! Thanks Shannon! That is a huge compliment. I am a returning to college student after 13 years ago dropping out. My major is art and I just one day want to teach art. Nothing more and nothing less. Just want to teach people what I love to do, don't need to make a million dollars. Just need to make enough doing what I love to survive and help provide for my family. Again, thank you so much. I am in the process of working on my channel. I have recorded an intro and a few hauls, one or two tutorials....But my digital slr is lame for videos. Once I get my art tiles video recorded, I'll be up an running. So I am ordering a tripod for my iphone 6 which seems to be shooting the best video (until I can buy a video camera). I'm still a few weeks out, but I should have stuff going up soon. I'll definitely keep you updated. I watched tons of your videos last night and here to stay! :) Again thank you so much. Hearing that from someone who has a successful channel is amazing and very inspiring. And one more thank you...Started my journaling by 5s last night. Did step one only then spent hours cutting out images last night from magazines. If you can get your hand on a Papaya Magazine...They have awesome images to use in your art journals. Thanks Sandi

    have you used the left pages for actual journaling? maybe adding a nice sheet to the left and writing how the right page makes you think or ideas it creates in your mind. thank you for sharing

      That's a great idea for those who like journaling with words. I'm a visual journaler and seldom use words in my own journals. Thanks so much for watching!

    how do you keep the pages from sticking to each other in the paint stage when you turn the page to do the next one???

      +Chelsea Everly You can put sheets of waxed paper between the pages as you go, that helps a lot.

    I am a mix of left and right brain. When I try to do anything creative my left brain wants to really take control. I am so excited about trying this. I thing the challenge will force some creativity. Thanks for sharing. 😀

    The transfer page that was dark - just screamed Starry Starry Night to me. Maybe add a half an ear LOL. You have entirely too much fun playing in your journal. Thanks for the suggestion - it sounds fun to do that way.

    Wow, Shannon. This video puts me into turmoil. On the one side I totally see that this could be a way to re-train my artsy brain side (which I hadn't done for 20 years, and currently does not work). On the other side, the use of a whole journal like this contradicts my nature so thoroughly that I need to ponder whether I can overcome that or whether the "waste of paper" which most obviously it would be in my eyes knowing my "talent" is something that makes me too sad to do it. I know, this is totally ridiculous, but even a composition book has "pride" in my eyes ... it is absolutely stupid. But maybe I will alter the rules to fit my needs, if I cannot overcome that point.
    And I wanted to thank you for your great inspiration. I hope you don't feel offended when I say "waste of paper", that is just my personal feeling. I am the one who cannot relate to junk journalling, remember? ;-) I am trying to find my personal freedom with that, but beyond that: I love your art mojo and I have respect for the things you do. And I hope you keep inspiring people the way you do, because other people's judgement does not count. What makes you happy, does.
    So thank you, Shannon.

      I am not offended at all and totally understand where you're coming from :) Instead of a bound book, some people have done this with loose pages, even index cards. If you can get over that hurdle and force yourself to stick to the time limit (it's NOT easy!) it really can help you to let loose and not overthink the creative process.

      Maybe you could put together junk mail as the base for a journal. then in stage one all you have to do is use the paint and ink to cover up any printing on the junk mail ... then go on. It's fun.
