    There are 3 reasons to use Hexen format:
    - Vanilla Hexen
    - ZDaemon
    - Odamex
    ZDaemon and Odamex are based on an old version of ZDoom that didn't support UDMF.
    Also, you completely glossed over what the program name to the left of the map format actually meant.
    Source ports such as Boom, Eternity and even ZDoom made their own additions to the Doom format.
    Due to this, not all of the actions seen in 'GZDoom: Doom 2 (Doom format)' are actually vanilla compatible.
    The program name to the left of the map format lets you choose which source port you are targeting, so that you can be able to use that source port's own extensions to the map format. This is how you make Doom levels for source ports like Boom and MBF that only make additions to the original Doom format, but do not have a format of their own.

    I started learning level design using doom in the early 2000’s. I’ve moved on to building maps in Halo forge now; but I must admit this is my favorite TH-cam channel to watch for technical and analytical map design information. You’re map designs and tutorials are always shedding new light on the technical & creative process of building maps. I appreciate your time and effort you put into this Chubz; It’s helps some of us more than you know.

    Thank you, very much, for detailed explanation. When I search something like tutorial or lesson in the network I'm search complete explanation of questions which always ignored by most of the modders. And when I ask them about difference between format they love to answer "just use this format, this format better, no need explanation, this is fact". I don't like facts which not proved and not explained. On your channel I find the many of explanations with very clear language. Thank you once more time. This priceless.

    Thank you for making this video. Just recently I got back in to mapping and this has still always been something that has confused me. I couldn't seem to ever find a solid explanation in one place on all this. I keep finding myself back on this channel. Great videos :)

    Not so much a format but a little limitation to keep in mind about certain formats:
    GZDooM allows flats and walls to be interchanged on the fly, allowing flats to become walls instead. Most DooM engines dislike this so make absolutely sure if you're building, for example, a Woof map but first tested it in GZDooM (UDMF), Woof will get upset if it randomly tries to load FLAT1_1 as the starting room walls.

      I'm pretty sure Woof doesn't even support UDMF at all, so it would error out anyway.

    On the contrary, Mr. chub, I was able to port all of my maps to Hexen format from UDMF with no sacrifices other than floor and ceiling stuff, and some fog. Made for smaller files too!

    You might want to keep the default Hexen format if you're making levels you want to work in vanilla Hexen.

      It's better to convert the vanilla doom map with zdwadconv.exe **before** converting it to UDMF with UDB. It preserves most actions this way.

    What editor do you recommend for Linux? Use Doom Builder with Wine? How much of a trade off with the Linux options like Slade?

      I've never used Linux or any OS other than Windows, so I'm clueless when it comes to that. Sorry. :-(

      There's eureka but last time I checked it didn't even support udmf format :( Though that was over a year ago maybe things have changed since then

    8:00 You actually got the action wrong, it is supposed to be "Door raise" not "Door open". The 'Door Open' action makes it stay open, while the 'raise' opens it for a while then closes again. In UDMF you also need 'repeatable action' turned on.

    I cannot start my own maps. I just don't understand I guess but freaking love doom. My dad first showed me when I was seven after his graveyard shift and I never looked back, I just want to make my own maps and make him play it.

    You didn't mention the main drawback of udmf format which is that it absolutely destroys your maps source port compatibility because ironically enough "universal map format" is literally the least universal map format and is supported by the least source ports :/ Pretty sure this is why doomworld seems to have a pretty strong preference towards boom complevel 9 maps or lower, unless you specifically *need* to use some udmf features in your map you should just stick to doom format and use source port action extensions unless what you want to do in your map absolutely can't be done without udmf

      Sounds like an issue with source ports, not the format. The format itself is great.

      @@Razumen well yeah I mean it is mostly a problem of the source ports but considering that problem is most definitely not going to resolve itself any time soon considering how biased the doom and quake community are towards legacy support on average I'd say it's definitely worth pointing out

      @@jlewwis1995 Oh UDMF support will only grow as it's objectively better for advanced projects than any of the others. which aren't compatible with the vanilla engine anyways. The complainers can stay on the vanilla experience.

      Ultimate Doom Builder is the most modern one as far as I know, so that's probably the best one to use today. It's essentially a successor to GZDoom Builder (which was in turn a Doom Builder 2 successor).

    I like 3d floors but making secrets is a pita in udmf. Do you have any tips or is it all scripted?

      Are you asking about secrets specifically for 3D floors, or just secrets in general?

      @@Chubzdoomer I appreciate you replying. One of those things were I step away for a minute and came back to it. The sector not being special 9 threw me off. Just needed to hit the flag for it that’s kinda hard to find. Secret items are straight forward but it’d be neat to see a scripted secret that uses a 3d floor from a flat raised to a slope. Kill two birds with one stone.
