- Most music for Christmas is relatively upbeat. However, there are a few carols that are rather melancholy because they are in minor. This is a medley of four such examples. In fact, my last selection is for Hanukkah, but it's all the same season for me.
I start with the Coventry Carol. Then you hear green Greensleeves, also called What Child Is This.
Next is a bit of Carol of the Bells. Finally you hear Shalom Aleichem.
I always enjoy an introspective look at Christmas. Some of the best Christmas songs are also the saddest.
Toyland, anyone? Absolutely crushing to hear, when you're the grownup and can't live in Toyland anymore.
Of course you know that I agree with you. But I also understand why people get weighed down by music that is darker.
Frankly, I found this selection refreshing and uplifting to hear. To me there is a quiet reverence to Christmas time. The tree of my early child had real candles and was only revealed on Christmas Eve. The minor key and esp. the calmer pensive songs goes with my preference and mood. I also very much like the order of your selection.
The Christmas season is a very hard time for many people. I understand why some people want nothing sad in addition to some very sad memories. I prefer music that has darkness in it because that's part of life but I have to admit that I also like music that ends in a victory. All of the Beethoven symphonies and with a joyous or hopeful mood no matter how much darkness has gone before.
