    Coffee / tea enjoyed, cakes eaten, photographs taken, portable cafe loaded back aboard our train and the last of the passengers seated, we were ready to bid farewell to Cafe Bloodwood as we set off to our next stop at Einasleigh. A number of passengers had asked our drivers about all the termite hills that dotted the landscape. Driver 'Will' responded by inviting passengers to strap themselves in because he was about to blow their socks off with the exciting world of termites. In this video you don't just get a driver's eye view of the track ahead, you will also learn all about termites and if the thirst for termite knowledge isn't your thing, a second version of this video without commentary will be available in the next day or two.
    Here is a little information about the train, mostly courtesy of Wikipedia -
    The service was introduced on 3 April 1995 by Queensland Rail to replace the Forsayth Mixed (marketed as the 'Last Great Train Ride'). The line was closed from Mareeba to Mount Surprise at the same time. It was initially run with a 2000 class railmotor set that was refurbished at Townsville Workshops. Initially this service only ran on the Mount Surprise to Forsayth section of the Etheridge line. However, after an upgrade of the line for sugar syrup trains from Cairns to Arriga, and a limited restoration of the rest of the line, the railmotor started travelling from Cairns to Forsayth in September 1998. In 2004 it was decided to put the running of the train out to tender and the winning bid was submitted by “Cairns Kuranda Steam Pty Ltd”. Please listen to the commentary to hear more about “Cairns Kuranda Steam” and how it came to be running the Savannahlander.

    Always nice and interesting cab ride with the same weather. Some.nice landscapes seen at the end. Thanks for this ride and for showing details of the bridge where the train will pass, but at what speed ?

      Hello, it's nice to know you are enjoying this ride. I am working on the next part of this trip, including seeing the train cross the bridge at no more than 10kph from both the lineside and from inside the train. This is a train ride like no other 😉.

    Rugged yet so beautiful thanks Tim, You would not like to be stranded out there with 2 flat tires & only 1 spare, out of petrol ⛽ no water 💧 or sat phone 📱,Looking fwd to the next part of this amazing adventure cheers Bob. ps I knew the termites 🐜🐜🐜would get a mention i thought i spotted a couple of the giant variety grazing in a paddock pity you didn't have a saddle on board.🤣😂😅😁

      Coming from the UK as I do, I found this landscape so different to anything I am used to, it is beautiful in its own way and the railway itself without fences or any of the lineside paraphernalia that is common place in the UK fascinated me. I was gutted when I realised this train didn't carry an emergency termite saddle, I'm not sure where to buy one, but next time I travel on this train I'll do my best to have one with me, hmm maybe Neil can help me?
      I'm glad you enjoyed the ride 🦥🦇🐊🦗🪳🕷🦂🦟🪰🪱🦘🦘🦘😊.

    Hi Tim! The minimum requirement for such a train journey is a sufficient supply of cold beer 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻. 3 pieces minimum for each person 👍. Best regards from the pig cold Mühlviertel, Hans.

      Hello Hans, after three days at below freezing it has warmed up enough today to melt the ice on the puddles in my back garden, but I don't think we have been getting as cold as you have in Austria, maybe a whiskey is better on such cold days. The heat of the Australian Savannahland seems so long ago now, fortunately there was a fridge for people to store their own beer in on the train. The Einasleigh pub came as a welcome relief on such a hot day. Stay warm and enjoy a 🍺 or two. Cheers. Tim.

    Reminds me of a Need for Speed Playstation game I once played. I was listening to the commentary about a car track in Australia, which ended thus:
    "Make sure you take plenty of water, as you may find yourself thirsting for more than just victory."

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We were reminded on a number of occasions the wear a sun hat and take as bottle of water whenever we ventured out into the heat of the day as well as applying plenty of sun block. It is good advice.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There was cold water and cold beer if you put your own in the fridge at the beginning of the journey, fortunately the train stopped at a number of pubs along the way and "yes" it was easy to work up a thirst with only the gentle draft coming in through the windows to cool passengers down.

    1:20 - Reflection in the window glass at centre-height, far left of screen, is that from your camera, Tim?

    • @Timsvideochannel1

      To the best of my knowledge the Savannahlander (the train we were on) is the only train using this part of the track these days, but that wasn't always the case and I guess there must be an occasional maintenance train.

      I'm sure Neil would politely point out that were travelling aboard a “rail-motor”, now the origin of the term “rail-motor” is interesting, in the next part of this series of videos one of our drivers suggested the term was coined back in the days of steam driven railcars.

      @@Timsvideochannel1 The NSWGR(as it was once known: New South Wales Government Railways) CPH-class rail motors are the *only* ones legitimately-tagged as "Tin Hares" because of their history. I had already explained why they were called such. They got the tag because they were reputed to be as fast on their tracks as the mechanical greyhound lures that were introduced to country greyhound racecourses were in 1923 when these devices made their debut at those racecourses. 1923 was also when the CPH-class railmotors were introduced. The Gulflander and Savannahlander rail motors are nowhere near as fast, mainly due to the tracks on which they run are of a condition that requires a restricted speed, probably not more than 50 Km/H.

      I did cut out the bit where the driver told us how much the Americans gave to "The Australian Koala Foundation" on hearing the story, maybe the Americans just have a heart of gold and they want to save all the koalas from those devastating bush fires, after all an arboreal termite nest is easy to mistake for the charred remains of an unfortunate koala.
