LOL! That "feature" in the boot to stop you luggage from "rattling around" is actually for making sure you don't over fill the boot and then drop the roof. The roof doesn't go down unless that cover is down. It's for the roof, not for stopping the luggage from moving.
I currently own a 1997 SL 320 (Inline 6) as a daily driver, type R129. I've had a week with an SL 350 back in 2006 (type R230), but was not convinced, and that V6 had a 90° angle, sub-par. The R231 series you present is around 150 pound lighter with a much better V6. It's the one I'm lusting after. Nice review, no-nonsense.
I have brought the SL350 and it is a great car to drive and cruise in, I did consider the SL500 but for me the SL350 felt better in the corners and is more suited to the roads in the UK and it has a great note up in the revs, it is beautifully made a and a joy to drive putting the roof down and going for a cruise has put the fun back in to driving , I have had the SL now for four months and can not fault it.
I drove an SL500 and SLK350. Both lovely cars. The SLK really impressed though with the slightly larger cabin. It just felt beautiful. Engine wise, if money no object go for SL500. But if you were thinking of using vehicle as a serious continental tourer then the SL350 would be kinder on your wallet. The only other car that gave me a similar 'superior cabin' feel was a BMW M6. Saw a 350SL in Austria this year in a deep bronze colour. Looked gorgeous.
Lovely car, but the R230 2008 facelift is for me the best looking SL they ever made, the version before this. with classic elegant lines compared to this squared off haunches that are business like but not classical.
Unfortunately, after decades of beautiful SL's the R231 just doesn't have a cohesive look. The designers were always going to struggle to emulate the almost perfect R230. My pick would be a 2006 - 2008, R230 SL, which will cost you about a tenth of the cost of a new one. Get one quick before they start to appreciate as all old (well cared for) SL's do.
