This movie is one of my favorites ever. There is such a masterful management of tones and characters. I don't think there's a character I dislike, the torture scene, though, is always hard to watch, the tone shift from the moment Kick-Ass and Big Daddy are kidnapped until Daddy's death is really grim and oddly believable.
+Saint Link Same here. I LOVE Kick-Ass. I like the comic a little bit more since it sticks to the premise a little bit better, but this is one of my all time favorite comic book movies.
A lot of people say "hit girl" is the best character but I personally think I like red mist it's honestly sad to see a character want to do something his father doesn't it's honestly a great ark but they screwed it in kick ass 2 how he acts like a straight super villain I mean I get his dad got blown up and he accidentally killed his own mother but they shouldn't have played it like a light tone it should've had him thinking in a serious tone
I actually didnt mind the sequence at all where Kick Ass goes guns a blazin with the jet pack. Not only was it fun to watch, but I just took it in the sense that Dave finally truly realizes that he's in a dangerous superhero mission, and is prepared this time, to a degree. And he doesn't become gun happy later on or in the sequel; his good morals and disdain towards violence are still very much intact. He saw the jetpack as the nasty means to a nasty situation and simply saves Hit-Girl.
i disagree about the frankie/red mist relationship being superficial because after the warehouse getting burned down scene frankie is worried that red mist is hurt or died and as soon as red mist comes back into the room the first thing they do is embrace each other
There's not a lot of family friendly stuff on TH-cam and since we talk so much about superheroes and comics and also encourage people to think about the stories they watch and read, we like to keep it as kid-friendly and all-inclusive as we can. -CL
I agree with everything you said. You explained exactly how I feel about this film better than I ever could. I'm subscribing \m/ btw you should totally review the sequel!
If you liked Kick-Ass, I suggest you should watch Super (2010). It was directed by James Gunn (Super, Guardians of the Galaxy) and has similar themes to Kick-Ass
Wow Captain Logan... It seems like only yesterday... When I was just a little 16 year old teen asking for a review of my "favorite movie of all time" just for the sake of hearing some wordy prises. So much changed in three years... So much that I can see all the points, even the negative ones, you indicated on this. And most of all for your BRILLIANT videos and reviews I saw in this time period. I will still keep watching your products Mr. Logan. You're absolutely my favorite critic forever.
About you thinking Big Daddy couldn't stay hidden if he makes that kind of mistake, remembering that Kick-Ass is the "first" superhero, and the only other one he's ever met, I can buy that Big Daddy would let his guard down knowing that Red Mist is with Kick-Ass, the other superhero, and that as far as he knows, Red Mist is capable of taking down mob bosses. To Big Daddy, it's another reliable soldier, and he is willing to take a chance trusting him since he's with the only other hero he's met.
In the future generations, our children's children will watch double features of the Superhero Rewinds for Kick-Ass and Underdog, the two polar extremes on the tonal scale.
Another awesome review! Only minor gripe is where you mention that Big Daddy easily lets Kick-Ass into his secret HQ despite previously saying he doesn't trust him. This might've already been pointed out in the comments but he actually arranges to meet him at one of his safe houses, not his home.
I feel the movie was more of a super hero comedy where as a comic was a satire, the book was making fun of how ridiculous the super hero idea is, while the movie was just a comedic movie with vigilante super heroes in it.
I knew a guy like that in high school, except he was more of an anti-bully mercenary. If some guy was picking on you, you slide the anti bully a couple of dollars and he would extract a humiliating revenge on your behalf. once he put a plate of brownies in the cheerleader's locker room before the big game. The brownies had laxatives in them. Another time he put super glue on the school band's conducter's stick. ah good times
If you think about the themes of Kick ass regarding the fact that you have to have a special devotion and skill set to be an effective urban hero, completely contradicts what the Dark Knight rises was trying to convey with Bruce Wayne and John Blake's idea that anyone can be a hero or rather anyone can be Batman.
I was waiting for you to do this review. I also enjoyed the mix of satire and character drama, but when Kick-Ass himself started shooting people, I got turned off because everything leading up to that seemed to be suggesting he was a different type of hero from Hitgirl and Big Daddy. I think I'll have to give it a second chance and pick it up now that you've reminded me how many good points it still has.
As Eric would say "A couple of things", The fun violence in Kickass in nowhere near the same as the horrific, disgusting violence on a Saw film. Second, the "raunchy" nature of this film is contributed to the characters. Saying you like one and not the other is almost a contradiction. It's a taste thing, if you like the Superbad style comedy, but it's definitely in character for them to be wild and their antics being just as wild.
If I were to be a superhero like the ones who actually DO put on a costume in real life, I'd love to be an anti-bullying superhero. I'd expose school bullies to their teachers and parents (like through a video or other evidence), defend the bully victims if they're being physically or verbally attacked, and help the victims recover from the damage any way I can. Well, whether I end up putting on an actual costume or not, I'd love to find a way to do anti-bullying somehow.
I just think that Kick-Ass wanted to save Hitgirl and probably would've had to think about it offscreen. Also that disconnect is probably a commentary unto itself, which would be putting themes before narrative, take that as you will.
You have a point. Language is a weird thing. Words are often changed (some might say distorted) in order to give them multiple meanings. Sometimes it's on purpose and other times its just people misusing a word. "Irony" is a prime example of this.
dont worry, the other bullies quit messing with people until they found the anti bully merc. she appologised to the ones she tormented, the band conducter quit being a dick, and the culprit was expelled for making the school look bad (the band played so horribly due to the glue inciddent.) and the worst thing about it, I found out the anti bully merc was also the guy I bought my weed from in junior year. damn as soon as he was expelled I had no connects.
If the films are brutal and full of gore, the comics, Kick Ass and Kick Ass 2 is much more, and worse, Kick Ass 2 the comic don't change the age of Mindy, she still an 11 year old girl in that comic. I learn to appreciate Kick Ass for the story, not because the violence, and I really like the change of Mindy in the second, instead of a 11 girl we had an 16 teenage girl, is much better accept her violent act at that age, and make her a potential love interest to Dave.
Well Cap, you may have persuaded me to give this movie a shot. Still not 100% sure; like far too many people, in my Teens this was exactly what I thought Super-Hero movies should be like (regardless of super-powers or not), but I am learning more and more how the choices of what I put into my mind affect my thinking and thus my actions. Plus I have a strong aversion to profanity. =P The "Big Daddy" character interests me the most, because of living in increasingly violent times.
I really enjoy your superhero movie reviews. This movie really took me by surprise. I had never followed the comics so I could watch this without comparison. I enjoyed the reality take on kids without powers trying to stand up against the criminal element & for the most part early on, fail. And yes the violence is over the top, but for some reason I didn't feel dirty watching it. Had to treat it like Vegas & keep the violence there. Very good story & the acting was superb!
Kick Ass is one of those tonal shift whiplash films that I really admire. Overrall a decent film with a good cast that's based off an okay book by Mark Millar and JRJR (John Romita JR.)
And that's fair... personally... I know Kick-Ass is supposed to be a park parody like Ninja Turtles was so I accepted the absurdity at times. But I can understand people not liking it too. And I didn't care for the comic characters but the comic has it's own following so it's totally fair that people liked the comic... after all without it we wouldn't have the movie. :)
I totally disagree with you about Dave and Katie's relationship, I don't think it works at all. She was only ever interested in him because there was a rumor going around that he'd been turned gay by being raped and she wanted a gay best friend to hang out with. The guy she thought was her friend turned out to just be lying the whole time to be close to her. It makes sense that she'd find that creepy and want nothing to do with him, not suddenly wanna fuck him.
"The movie glorified bankrupt morals and degenerate ideas" ...No, those have to be most of Quentin Tarantino movies, where the heroes are mostly psychos who talk with complex sentences to sound cool and always resolving their conflicts with violence. And if you're going to backup by saying: "Oh, in this movie Kick-Ass murders all those gangsters in the end cause he's fucked up!" ...NO, he's avenging the death of Big Daddy, who had ALL THE REASONS IN THE WORLD for hating and wanting them dead.
I've tried several ways of avoiding copyright flags and they just don't work-- still happens occasionally. So I decided to go back to the old format. I'll still sometimes get content ID matches with the stills, but even being affiliated with Machinima, I'd never be able to get away with full video on TH-cam. Plus, most of the viewers seem to prefer the slide show to the video, believe it or not. Folks feel the video is too distracting. -CL
I'm not sure I'm articulating my feelings properly-- it isn't that I hate seeing violence in movies, it's that this movie makes me laugh at people doing horrible things, but it's not just parody or satire. What part of the acting is over the top? Everyone was extremely natural in the film. Sure the violence is over the top but the acting wasn't anything a real person wouldn't do or say in the situation for the most part.
Nah, I'd like to do more than that. I know it's near impossible to stop ALL bullying, especially with the rise of the Internet, so a Facebook page would not do a lot, like you said. I dunno. It's difficult, but not impossible. I'd still like to help people from this kind of struggle, one way or another.
9:50 - Hey, look it's 2 Quick Silvers standing next to one another he must be moving so fast we're seeing double!? XD by 2015 this will hopefully make more sense!
I both agree and admit it. I am a fan of some slasher franchises like Fri the 13th which many don't see the point of who question it's popularity. And I can't deny that I completely see their point. I feel that way because it is essentially Aliens with werewolves instead and I feel Aliens wastn that gory, Sure Bishop was ripped in half but it didnt look real because he was a synthetic.
TOO MUCH SAX AND VIOLINS. Oh my god, captain Logan, I was just watching having a good time, then that pops up and I start laughing hard and I wake up people in my house and They yell at me...Thanks. lol XD
Captain Logan, I don't know man, to willfully watch Underdog to make a review for all of us? that seems awful brave on your part...I wouldn't go through with it if I were you.
Katie's reaction to the whole Kick-Ass reveal is my favorite movie reaction ever: "FUCK!"
Comic it’s not like that he gets beat up
This movie is one of my favorites ever. There is such a masterful management of tones and characters. I don't think there's a character I dislike, the torture scene, though, is always hard to watch, the tone shift from the moment Kick-Ass and Big Daddy are kidnapped until Daddy's death is really grim and oddly believable.
+Saint Link Fuck yeah. Amazing dark scene, perfectly executed.
+Saint Link Same here. I LOVE Kick-Ass. I like the comic a little bit more since it sticks to the premise a little bit better, but this is one of my all time favorite comic book movies.
"Stop being such a smart-ass" That line absolutely killed me.
Mr. Symbiote. Read the comic, you'll get your fix..trust me
I loved this movie, probably one of my favorites.
I was so very disappointed by Kick-Ass 2
James F Agreed, it wasn't bad, but a disappointment, seriously, who wants to see mean girls but with superheroes.
I actually didnt mind the sequence at all where Kick Ass goes guns a blazin with the jet pack. Not only was it fun to watch, but I just took it in the sense that Dave finally truly realizes that he's in a dangerous superhero mission, and is prepared this time, to a degree. He saw the jetpack as the nasty means to a nasty situation and simply saves Hit-Girl.
Holy Shit, Red Mist is totally Harry Osbourne! What a great analysis of the movie
Kick-Ass is maybe the only film that we will ever hear Nicholas Cage saying kryptonite. due to him, being so close of being superman
about the reasoning for why everyone thinks Kick-Ass is gay, high school kids actually think that way, they're kind of evil that way
i disagree about the frankie/red mist relationship being superficial because after the warehouse getting burned down scene frankie is worried that red mist is hurt or died and as soon as red mist comes back into the room the first thing they do is embrace each other
Did NYPD go after big daddy for the warehouse fire
There's not a lot of family friendly stuff on TH-cam and since we talk so much about superheroes and comics and also encourage people to think about the stories they watch and read, we like to keep it as kid-friendly and all-inclusive as we can.

Geekvolution I can respect that can't wait for you to review the sequel
I agree with everything you said. You explained exactly how I feel about this film better than I ever could. I'm subscribing \m/ btw you should totally review the sequel!
As a kid my parents never let me see anything that had to do with Batman.
Now I know why...
Don’t know why they were worried they’re not even rich.
If you liked Kick-Ass, I suggest you should watch Super (2010). It was directed by James Gunn (Super, Guardians of the Galaxy) and has similar themes to Kick-Ass
And it has Dwight Schrute as a superhero, you can never go wrong there.
Its a lot darker than kick ass tho, abit too heavy for my taste
He didn't like super!
@@matthewkelly1418 kick ass comic is darker

This was a great movie, I love the part when he fights the 5 guys jumping that guy, "Yeah I'd rather die", that was so inspiring
Big daddy and hit girl is worth seeing the movie over. I wish Hit girl had a movie of her own.
I knew a guy like that in high school, except he was more of an anti-bully mercenary. Hmm well yeah
Glad to hear I'm not the only one who watched Vaughn's commentary, good job mate 😎
I was waiting for you to do this review. Great review. Loved the opening. Glad you praised this great film so much. I was suprised you didn`t give it 3.5 or 4 stars. Great analasyse.
I just think that Kick-Ass wanted to save Hitgirl and probably would've had to think about it offscreen. Also that disconnect is probably a commentary unto itself, which would be putting themes before narrative, take that as you will.
For your next no prize show, you called MATTHEW VAUGHN, Michael Vaughn
The feeling the reviewer has about the mixed signals this film gives out are the same problems that plague Watchmen.
You have a point. Language is a weird thing. Words are often changed (some might say distorted) in order to give them multiple meanings. Sometimes it's on purpose and other times its just people misusing a word. "Irony" is a prime example of this.

Yeah I love the slide show. Don't know why. Maybe because you always used to do it and it's more old school for TH-cam. It just fits.
27:10 - Yet another good example of early Peter Dicklage's work in comic movies! XD
bid daddy and batman have something in common
When I first saw that you went, "Back to Formula!" I was smiling ear to ear.
Hey cap great review as always dude just thought id point out that its matthew vaughn not michael
At 00:30, well I just checked something off my bucket list.
I love superhero rewind once spawn year is done I hope you can go full out on these again. Not to say I don't love Spawn year! :)
Did anyone else see Big Daddy and say: "What if Jason Todd became Batman..."

I love how Backyard Superkid is back!
"It's a good thing it wasn't called SuperF*ckers!"
I didn't know you were partnered with Machinima, Cap. I guess I should watch the update videos more often...
LOL that opening was priceless! Great review too.
he'll probably do that one in a year or two
Hey captain Logan, love ur videos, can you make a superhero rewind on the movie "super" thanks
i never really liked kick ass to be honest. to me it brings in the whole superhero idea that i admire and believe in and turns it into a perversion.
Can you please do a Superhero Rewind of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
Hey Captain do you think you're going to get around to doing Blankman in the near future?
"The movie glorified bankrupt morals and degenerate ideas" ...No, those have to be most of Quentin Tarantino movies, where the heroes are mostly psychos who talk with complex sentences to sound cool and always resolving their conflicts with violence.
And if you're going to backup by saying: "Oh, in this movie Kick-Ass murders all those gangsters in the end cause he's fucked up!" ...NO, he's avenging the death of Big Daddy, who had ALL THE REASONS IN THE WORLD for hating and wanting them dead.
Did the bad guys kill big daddy wife
I've tried several ways of avoiding copyright flags and they just don't work-- still happens occasionally. So I decided to go back to the old format. I'll still sometimes get content ID matches with the stills, but even being affiliated with Machinima, I'd never be able to get away with full video on TH-cam. Plus, most of the viewers seem to prefer the slide show to the video, believe it or not. Folks feel the video is too distracting.

That's definitely the plan!

I'm not sure I'm articulating my feelings properly-- it isn't that I hate seeing violence in movies, it's that this movie makes me laugh at people doing horrible things, but it's not just parody or satire. probably, the Kick Ass 3 comic books are being published now
What part of the acting is over the top? Everyone was extremely natural in the film. Sure the violence is over the top but the acting wasn't anything a real person wouldn't do or say in the situation for the most part.
Will you be doing a Rewind of Scott Pilgrim vs The World anytime soon?
Nah, I'd like to do more than that. I know it's near impossible to stop ALL bullying, especially with the rise of the Internet, so a Facebook page would not do a lot, like you said. I dunno. It's difficult, but not impossible.
I'd still like to help people from this kind of struggle, one way or another.
Do you think that you could discuss Heroes on here?
9:50 - Hey, look it's 2 Quick Silvers standing next to one another he must be moving so fast we're seeing double!? XD by 2015 this will hopefully make more sense!
Hey CL, are you ever going to do a superhero rewind of "Super"?
Greatest intro in the history of man, nay the universe. No, the multiverse
I both agree and admit it. I am a fan of some slasher franchises like Fri the 13th which many don't see the point of who question it's popularity. And I can't deny that I completely see their point. Even while I fully admit that I like and watch them on the guilty pleasure level of appreciating the prosthetic and gore effects like those from Tom Savini, and even the level of unpleasant carnage carried out by franchise "killer" characters. Even if the plots ARE thin and the appeal is meaningless.
If you found a person bleeding on the street would you
A: video tape it and shout world star!
Or
B: Call the police.
Because I seriously did notice that.
when are you going to do the rewind that Vacuuminator requested
Like "bitch", "ass" is one of those profanities you can get away with because it wasn't originally a profanity. "Bitch" is a female dog and "ass" is another name for a donkey.
Best into speech ever :-)
Wow, Cap. Ever the professionalist. I admire that. I mean clearly, RoScFan was trying to troll you here, with his childish insinuation of calling your manhood into question over a personal opinion, and you still reply to him with an honest, and thoughtfully respectful reply on clarification of your points. Well done. Even, I myself, as a casual fan of horror and exploitation films for their own bizarre charms myself, I completely agree that there is a lot of merit and 100% truth in what you say.
I've never understood the term "have your cake and eat it too." It makes no sense. Isn't cake made to be eaten?
What are your thoughts on Roger Eberts review for this movie?
great review, can't wait for the next one.
Has he done a review of super yet?
+Mark Galan not yet
Will you ever do Up,Up,And Away?
Though I love your channel, I always wondered why you guys don't swear on it.
Someone might have beaten me to it but 1:14 "MICHAEL Vaughn?" Do I win on the next top 10 no prizes award?
Hey, CL! I'd tell you to check ot Super, but I think I know how that rewind would go...
to me none of the characters feel like heroes
He was torture by Frank man , in a terrible way , he already saw more people die , so him killing people is not a big issue for me , besides , he didn’t kill a single person in the second one , so he is still not a mass murder
Why didn't he report the warehouse fire and dead bodies to the police
At the begging about violence I completely agree with you but there was a movie I watched called Dog Soldiers that felt didnt need the violence. I feel that way because it is essentially Aliens with werewolves instead and I feel Aliens wastn that gory, Sure Bishop was ripped in half but it didnt look real because he was a synthetic.
Love the opening to this one, cap!
"It's a good thing it wasn't called "Superf***ers" or "The Bullsh** Avengers"!"
Ok, Hollywood get to work! Wait isn't Superf*uckers a web-series by the same guy that made Adventure Time!?
TOO MUCH SAX AND VIOLINS. Oh my god, captain Logan, I was just watching having a good time, then that pops up and I start laughing hard and I wake up people in my house and They yell at me...Thanks. lol XD
Captain Logan, I don't know man, to willfully watch Underdog to make a review for all of us? that seems awful brave on your part...I wouldn't go through with it if I were you.
"Underdog".....yay
"It's a good thing it wasn't called 'The Super-F*ckers' or 'The Bullsh*t Avengers"!
xD
hey this movie was in theatres on my birthday
0:30
Laugh so hard.
Review KICK ASS 2 Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not a review of the movie. Rather an introspective of the themes the movie may represent. Not a complaint I was just disappointed
I wonder what cap is gonna do when he has to talk about the mother f*cker for kick ass 2.
This a fantastic in-depth review! Excellent job cap! I love Kick-Ass, it's one of my favourite films ever XD
