Finally some appreciation for Mission Mode. Always sucked how Nintendo never revisit this. Also with potential Mouse Mode being a thing, we need custom Emblems back asap.
Mission mode is straight up one of the big reasons why DS is still my favorite Mario Kart game, especially the boss fights. I still remember how long it took me to beat King Boo lmao It's insane besides the Wii Channel challenges (which were only from online) Nintendo never delved into that gameplay format again for the series. Praying the new game changes that
@@brandonwilliams6119 yes, boss fights were great! i think if someday they will go the forza horizon 5 route, or lego 2k drive, with a open world mushroom kingdom with missions its gonna be insane
This mode wasnt nearly as a good as I remembered when I replayed it. But it's still something they should build upon. Mario Kart Wii DID have missions btw, but it was a timed online event.
I liked Wii's events, made the Topmen from Galaxy actually interesting among other things. I remember Mission Mode being pretty brief but good. They need to expand it.
I really wish they would just take the Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing approach and give us a story mode campaign with the option of multiplayer in it too. They’re already pulling from F-Zero again with increase the amount of racers from 12 to 24, despite F-Zero having a Max of 30 and 99 well, 99 racers, in MK8 they pulled the anti-gravity mechanic from F-Zero. What if F-Zero is a video game series that Nintendo occasionally uses to base their ideas off of their bigger racing franchise Mario Kart? Imagine they steal the Boost Power mechanic for the next entry lol.
I grew up with Mario Kart DS and played Mission Mode as a kid but I didn't fully remember all the cool stuff it tried to do. Thanks for the reminder that I gotta go back and check it out!
DS mario games delivered so much for players whether they had friends to play with or not. mission mode is such a unique singleplayer experience that makes mario kart DS feel wholly worthwhile today
I think this was, for most people, the best part of Mario Kart DS. It's one of the main reasons Diddy Kong Racing is so popular as well--we love having a single-player mode that differentiates itself from the rest of the game. It's kinda crazy that Nintendo hasn't realized that...hopefully with MK9?
2:41 Better way to phrase it is "Super Circuit conceived it, but Mario Kart DS popularized it" since no matter how much lighter the idea felt on the other game, it's unfair to undermine it.
I miss this game, Mission Mode was part of it, but I also remembering Nintendo always doing these online events where you can try to race against their staff online and you'd have a chance at appearing in their online videos or something. Wished they'd do this again. lol
Actually went back to this a bit last week on a new savefile, racing controls feels alot more engaging than in the later games, was just gonna play a 150cc cup but ended up unlocking and beating all 150cc cups without stopping, drifting feels so much more active and fun there than later games.
Thank you, Jon, for this lovely trip down memory lane. I still absolutely adore this game and loved the challenge presented in the missions. Really hoping for a strong single player catering in the new game.
Jon loves this topic so much he made it twice! Once in GX and once in GVG Sonic Transformed had this which is why it also stands among ths greats for racers, hope they remembered it for Crossworlds
I remember some parts of Mission Mode being very frustrating, but I was too stubborn to quit it. I felt so proud when I finally did it but then sad cause there wasn't really much else to do with it and I didn't have proper internet access for online multiplayer.
Mario Kart DS single player was the best thing ever created by Nintendo, I hope the single player mode like this or better will return in the new Mario Kart game
MKDS is really just a special game and one of a kind, giving it missions not only is a fantastic tutorial but it's also a great way to reuse content in a creative way. Tour does a pretty good job of continuing the frame work of missions but in it's gameplay system, hopefully the next game will take notes
mission mode, the last (and best imo) hurrah of the original drift mechanics, mission mode, and the main start of nintendo wifi connection made mkds one of my most played ds games. broke my red ds r button with how much snaking i did to keep up online, miss it dearly
I don't care about playing Mario Kart online at all, (and only occasionally play with friends/family) so the new one NEEDS some kind of substantial single-player to be that exciting as the big launch game for me. A new kind of mission mode could be cool if they put a lot into it
A mission mode would be really cool. Beside that I just want Nintendo gets rid of randomness when you play solo in the next Mario Kart GP mode. It doesn't make any sense to have it outside multiplayer modes (against other humans)
Mario Kart DS has the worst skill gap. You can be a completely competent player, but if you can't "snake", you'll never be able to compete with those who can.
Bro driving around and collecting a certain amount of coins or going through rings in an order isn't fun, and I'm tired of being gaslit that it is! Greatest single player mode might be All Cup Tour in Double Dash tbh
Loved mission mode in MKDS. It's such a shame that the MKWii missions were timed online exclusives that we can't play anymore. I missed out on most of them. What a waste.
Seeing the title and knowing it's about Mario Kart DS Mission mode. I loved that mode, especially the boss battles! I had so much hope it would return but even more fleshed out with cutscenes and some especially built levels. I guess Tour followed up on it, but since it's not playable with traditional controls thats not one I pick up often, especially with all the tracks on 8 Deluxe. Crazy to think there are leftover menus in Mario Kart Wii for a cut mission mode that was never meant to be though
Mario kart DS was a lot more impactful than people give it credit for. Besides being the first handheld mario kart that didn't suck (sorry super circuit. You were just rubbish) it was the first to have online play despite the plague of cheaters and snaking, it had the most courses to that point thanks to introducing the classic cups, you could make your own kart emblem (which would be cool to have again. Just let us report anything... Inappropriate), DS download to let people play without a game cart, R.O.B is an exclusive playable character and a nice reference and of course the fantastic mission mode that had unique challenges outside normal racing and even full boss fights. Mario Kart DS deserves the praise.
I hate this. I don't want meaningless missions or for it to be like Diddy Kong Racing. The only ting needed is for it to be difficult enough on the higer cc:s and to have short cuts that are hard enough to pull off to givet it a nice risk/revard ballance.
As great as mission mode was on the DS, I hope a future singleplayer is completely different. A few challenges and some boss fights just wouldn't fly these days.

Mario Kart still has a single player. It’s me. I’m still single 😔
this deserves a heart and a pin
skill issue
Real deep here😔💯
Let's catch dinner together sometime handsome
If you want to change that, then change that.
Finally some appreciation for Mission Mode. Always sucked how Nintendo never revisit this. Also with potential Mouse Mode being a thing, we need custom Emblems back asap.

Also crazy how we never got a game like Double Dash again, that game will always be my favorite for its unique gimmick

Making MKWii’s missions dependent on connecting online was a mistake
I really wish they would just take the Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing approach and give us a story mode campaign with the option of multiplayer in it too.

John as always making the best GVG videos 🐐
2:16 if you want to skip the ad
thank you for doing the work of god Herself 🙏🏽
I grew up with Mario Kart DS and played Mission Mode as a kid but I didn't fully remember all the cool stuff it tried to do. Thanks for the reminder that I gotta go back and check it out!
That smug, "no, I'm keeping it IN" in response to your own request made me giggle. Amazing video as always, Jon!
DS mario games delivered so much for players whether they had friends to play with or not. mission mode is such a unique singleplayer experience that makes mario kart DS feel wholly worthwhile today
this reminds me of the mission mode from sonic riders, which you needed to 100% to unlock super sonic. Super underrated game.
I think this was, for most people, the best part of Mario Kart DS. It's one of the main reasons Diddy Kong Racing is so popular as well--we love having a single-player mode that differentiates itself from the rest of the game. Glad i'm not the only one who remembers how amazing this mode was. Mario Kart DS remains the best mario kart game imo.
5:20 F-Zero 99 doesn't have tracks you play in reverse, it just has mirror mode with added/remixed object layouts.
Super Circuit is mainly a single player game for most people and it’s still a ton of fun today when you go for 3 star rankings

Cereal for 10 dollars a box! Woooooo
5:56 The reason why Lightning McQueen will never officially be in Mario Kart:
Thank you, Jon, for this lovely trip down memory lane. I still absolutely adore this game and loved the challenge presented in the missions. Really hoping for a strong single player catering in the new game.
Miss this mode so much. It was particularly disappointing it wasn't in 7.
OMG the nostalgia. One of my fondest memories of this game was playing with randos I met in line outside Bestbuy waiting for Wii
Jon loves this topic so much he made it twice!
Once in GX and once in GVG
Sonic Transformed had this which is why it also stands among ths greats for racers, hope they remembered it for Crossworlds
Mission mode will always be a peak gaming from childhood and it's still pains me Nintendo just never did it again
Mkds rules! Im literally replaying to get all gold cups rn
I remember some parts of Mission Mode being very frustrating, but I was too stubborn to quit it. I felt so proud when I finally did it but then sad cause there wasn't really much else to do with it and I didn't have proper internet access for online multiplayer.
Iirc MKWii had missions, but only in the external Mario Kart Channel app and they were timed events only.
Mario Kart DS single player was the best thing ever created by Nintendo, I hope the single player mode like this or better will return in the new Mario Kart game
MKDS def hit different. Miss the days of playing wifi and local with friends.
MKDS is really just a special game and one of a kind, giving it missions not only is a fantastic tutorial but it's also a great way to reuse content in a creative way.
Tour does a pretty good job of continuing the frame work of missions but in it's gameplay system, hopefully the next game will take notes

I don’t even like video games I just came to hear John’s soothing voice.
Right now im having a blast playing Ctgp-7 on my modded 3ds (modded mario kart 7)
Now that’s an epic mode!
Great video, personally the 4th race in a Tour cup felt like a mission mode successor
Really hoping MK9 has a more robust single player offering like this! Mario Kart DS was in a league of its own in this regard.
Yesss I loved the mission mode. I was sad MK7 and MK8 did not have this.
the dk mini turbo mission is how i learned to drift
I don't care about playing Mario Kart online at all, (and only occasionally play with friends/family) so the new one NEEDS some kind of substantial single-player to be that exciting as the big launch game for me.

I loved the mission mode. I want it back for a new game so bad.
We need this back
I adore mission mode, and I REALLY hope something similar makes an appearance in Mario Kart 9
Mario Kart DS has the worst skill gap. You can be a completely competent player, but if you can't "snake", you'll never be able to compete with those who can.
shout out to ctgp 7. when i found out that had missions i was so happy.
I wish they’d bring R.O.B. back to Mario kart
Mario Kart needs to get a better singleplayer mode. Imagine if it had one like CTR or Diddy Kong Racing
Hopefully they'll try to have a decent single player mode with the new title like Super Mario Party Jamboree.
I wonder if they will incorporate boss battles for the next Mario Kart game.
Hope Mario Kart 9 brings back the character specific items from Double Dash and Tour.
Jon one of your link amiibos fell over!
Mario Kart DS is still the best Mario Kart, and I really wish they'd bring back Mission Mode
Oh the good old days
Bro driving around and collecting a certain amount of coins or going through rings in an order isn't fun, and I'm tired of being gaslit that it is! Greatest single player mode might be All Cup Tour in Double Dash tbh
This! Just make it hard enough on the higest cc. All Cup Tour in Double Dash is fun every time I return to it.
Wow! I always wanted the mission mode to return, but I didn't remember that is was that expansive!! Hopefully it will come back in MK for Switch 2 🥰
If mission mode comes back I just hope they get creative with them like ds.
Tour at least got missions back but very limited.
it's a possibility after DKR and CTR
Man I miss that single player mode
Loved mission mode in MKDS. It's such a shame that the MKWii missions were timed online exclusives that we can't play anymore. I missed out on most of them. What a waste.
I HATE the squid ink in MK8, probably my least favourite to get caught with. In MK DS it's no problem thanks to the 2nd screen.
I will not stand for this Goomba Poobah slander, sir.
*sits down*

Just wondering if anyone here is going to mention CTGP7 added Mission Mode back to Mario Kart 7.
Damn, Steve is like, dad hot 👀
Mario kart DS was the best in everything, especially battle modes
We love our queen 👸 💅
is it even a competition?
I hate this. I don't want meaningless missions or for it to be like Diddy Kong Racing. The only ting needed is for it to be difficult enough on the higer cc:s and to have short cuts that are hard enough to pull off to givet it a nice risk/revard ballance.
Tbh, the whole mission mode was just a glorified tutorial.
yeah, and it's good fun
@That_Lady_Charlie except for that mission where you had to drift in a circle
I don't want your DAMN cereal
As great as mission mode was on the DS, I hope a future singleplayer is completely different. A few challenges and some boss fights just wouldn't fly these days.
Sellout
many such cases
