Love Japan...And Especially Mick Karn, was lucky to see him live with the short lived Polytown trio (T Bozzio, M Karn, Dave Torn) around 1994 at the Bottom Line NYC.. around that same year also saw David Sylvian and R Fripp at Beacon Theatre I think it was. A year before that saw R Sakamoto solo piano at the old Knitting Factory....man, those years are not coming back!!

I was a big fan of Porcupine Tree when I stumbled upon an EP of Japan in a record store. I hadn't heard of them before and the artwork caught my eye. I flipped the record to see what it's about and grabbed it the moment I saw Barbieri's name. I thought I was buying a prog album, but needles to say I was very pleasantly surprised to find something very different and very beautiful.
I didn't know about his solo work, so thanks Dereck I will check this out right away

JAPAN where one of those bands that grew on me after a while. I did not find their music to be as accessible as I had perhaps thought it would be on the initial listen. I think this was more due to the sound of the fretless bass, which changes the gestalt of the traditional rock & roll rhythm section into something that would be more befitting of a jazz environment. Kind of like how it took me a while to realize how great a band GENE LOVES JEZEBEL was, because it took me a while to get used to the second vocals on their stuff.

Hi man, I'm new to your channel. The Richard Barbieri caught my eye in my vid feed. Japan were such an under-rated band, still are. Such innovative stuff from each member of the band.Man, I would love to go through your vinyl collection, awesome.

You're absolutely right about this album sounding superb on vinyl. Even more importantly, though, I think that this was Richard's most confident sounding release up to this point. The latest album, "Under a spell", is for the most part a very dark album but a more than worthy follow up to "Planets and persona"... I now own three copies including the red vinyl issue!

"This is what the world needs now" - exactly, I agree. Thanks for the beautiful review, Dereck! I also love the album very much. - The next big thing will be "async", the new one by Sakamoto! - Best regards, Mike

Thanks Derek, Your enthusiasm,is untainted for Richard Barbieri and I'll buy this album, just as soon as I can.
LIfe long interest in Japan. And bought David's solo-collaborations and one of Mick's.Yet Never honestly felt much beyond the brief encounter which Japan gave me with all the nostalgia of the time(which Id go back to in an instance..if only zi could jump in the old Dellorian car).

If you like Japan / Porcupine Tree, you won't regret buying this (especially on vinyl). This really is an amazing achievement and it should bring Richard recognition that is long overdue.

You certainly seem to have eclectic musical taste Dereck. Would be interested to hear your take on the Dalis Car "The Waking hour" album. Likewise, The Associate's "Sulk".

Interesting. I haven't heard the name Mick Karn in a long time. I remember the album Polytown he did with Terry Bozzio and David Torn. I enjoy your your You tube show.

Thanks for this review, Dereck! I'm also excited about this wide-ranging interview with Mr. Barbieri: www.innerviews.org/inner/richard-barbieri It's so long (app. 11 000 words!) that I found it more convenient to put the webpage on my ebook reader where I made copious notes because there are many nice and quotable passages.
