I tried this yesterday. I love it. Have used half of the amount, like very hot mustard. In combination with a sweet orange tea it was delicious. The taste is like MAGGI liquid wort. Cheers from Germany
I remember when I was younger and was really trying to come into my own where food is concerned, and I bought a jar of this stuff, or maybe it was the veg one🤔 Anyway I took it home and slathered a very generous spoonful on a toast and took a huge bite🤢🤢🤢 It took me months to recover 😂 I've never had the courage to try it again, but now I'm thinking it would play well in soups and stews. Thanks Pete for this video😃I hope all is well with you 😊
It is not unlike miso, but it is much more concentrated and sharp. It is often used by vegans and vegetarians to achieve a near meaty umami flavour in soups and stews. I like to add a teaspoon of it to saute potatoes Resa 😋
I found out about Marmite from Dean Robert Willis at Canterbury. He mentioned it so I had to try some. At first I didn't like it, before I tried it with butter. Every morning I have a toasted mini-bagel with my own custom mixture of Marmite and butter. Two parts butter, one part Marmite. Perfect!
I'm surprised this stuff still hasn't caught on in the US. I never had it at any point in my whole life, but recently bought a jar and love it now. I think many fellow Americans are missing out on something good.
I make roast beef and roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings and veg etc and pour home made marmite gravy over it. It’s literally the best gravy in the world 🌎
I never tried it as a drink, I think I'll give it a go. I used to make beef tea using another popular product: Bovril and that was really good, but I have yet to try Marmite 😋
For me it tastes like heavily caramelized pretty much scorched onion and garlic, sort of along the lines of onion chutney. I found its good to spread a little on chicken before it's baked.
By itself, it is one of the most vile thing to eat on toast. But I am using it to elevate the umami flavour in soups, noodles, etc. and it's working out great.
Just had my first bite of marmite…I must admit, not terrible for this Texan. It’s definitely an acquired taste, but it’s not terrible like I have been told. I have been wanting to try it for years and finally got ahold of some (World Market). I did about the half tsp. per slice of toast, that was plenty. Thanks for your video!
Most people either love it or hate it, it seems like you are the former Holly. Half a teaspoon per slice is just about right for me too. About the same amount stirred into your home fries might produce a pleasant surprise too 😊😋
As a cooking ingredient Marmite has a similar flavour profile to soy sauce or miso Jeff, but it is still quite unique. British vegans use it a lot mixed with water as stock. I can't immediately think of any herbs or spices it wouldn't go with.
New England American here...Im game to try it especially for the nutritional aspect. Im only concerned about the sodium tho... Is there a nutrition chart out there that shows sodium and mg of B vitamins? Brewers yeast is so awesome for you!
I think it is pretty high in sodium by weight, but it is used so sparingly that I don't have any concerns. At my age salt is important for avoiding painful cramps.
I much prefer marmite. I can tell the difference between marmite and vegemite. Vegemite is more salty and has less depth of flavor. Marmite can also be enjoyed spread on jam and peanut butter. Yum!
@@LazyCookPete , indeed! :) Even though vegemite has other things in it (like dried vegetables, I believe), somehow it lacks depth of flavour to me. It drives me a little crazy when I see on TH-cam people "trying" out Marmite for the first time by eating a spoonful. It's like trying out, say, mustard for the first time and the only way you're eating it is by the spoonful. Of course that's not going to work for most people! Crazy! LOL.
All yeast extracts are a little too strong for most people to eat with a spoon. That would definitely put me off. If they all watched this video they would know how most British people eat it. 😊

I agree. Vegemite has a great taste but I find it quite grainy compared to Marmite. I'd be happy with either on my toast, but Marmite is the one I grew up eating 😋
I don't think it's weird. Marmite is very popular with vegans John, many of whom use it as stock. I have never made Marmite tea myself, perhaps it is time for m to try.

I love Marmite and have it, on buttered toast, every morning. However, I really dislike Vegemite! Have you tried a smear of Marmte inside a cheese sandwich? Heaven!
I'd eat Marmite any time over Vegemite ! Great food product however! Kraft was an American company who I worked for in Australia who never cared about their staff or contractors!! What more can one say ???
If you use marmite, like maggi, then you use it correctly. Try baking a steak, when steak is ready, add water in your pan to deglaze, and add marmite. Or, make soup, add marmite. Eating it pure .. i like it, but like i said, it's like maggi. It's strong. Not everyone wants it that strong.
I've seen so many videos about Marmite, mostly with British TH-camrs harassing foreigners with it. To my surprise I found it a few days ago in my local (Dutch) supermarket, and I obviously had to try. And brave as I was, I put quite a good amount on a _beschuit_ (rusk). Oh boy....I have tried some nasty stuff in my life but this beats them all. So overwhelmingly salty, so strong. Even when I scraped of most of it away, it's still unbearable. But now I see this video, toast, good layer of butter, and just a very small amount of Marmite....I guess I overdid it quite a bit. Now see if I can muster the courage to try it a second time....
Kudos to you for trying it. People who like strong cheese and old salami tend to love Marmite, if it is spread sparingly. It's also great to add a teaspoon of it to vegetarian soups and stews.
It is a taste you either love or hate AJ. Those who like strong cheese and salami tend to like it, while those who prefer mild flavours tend not to like it.
I bought a small bottle of this from the store today. I had heard of this, but never tried it. I figured, how bad could it be? So I brought it home, I open it and smell it. The fragrance was not overpowering, reminded me of barley malt from beer brewing. So then I took a small spoon and just took less than 1/16th of a teaspoon at the tip. I put it in my mouth and gave it a go. I am now convinced that this product is actually an industrial chemical or solvent that is not meant to be eaten. I believe that people are perpetrating a very elaborate ruse fooling others into thinking that this chemical is edible. No human being or animal is able to digest this wretched concoction. The aftertaste from such a tiny amount lingers in your mouth for hours. I don't believe this is a funny ruse either because I truly believe that people can overdose from this chemical and possibly die. If you pranksters who are pushing this 'edible marmite' big lie would be honest with your ploy, this charade can finally end. I will now try and polish my allen edmond shoes with the rest of this bottle.

The yeast extract product named Marmite is English, but you are correct in that the product was named after a French kitchen vessel of the same name. The English adopted French culinary terms for many things after the Norman invasion in 1066 by William The Conqueror.
How to eat marmite video shows exactly the common mistake of how not to eat marmite. This man is obviously a Marmite veteran, who's tolerance has been severely increased by many years of heavy Marmite abuse. The amount he puts on would make most normal Marmite lovers hurl. I really don't see the point of this video because this much marmite would put anyone who never tried it before off it for life. Use a thin scraping only, so the toast is not covered, if you never had it before. They say you either love it or hate it, but the truth is, you either know how to eat it or you don't.
I'm currently going through Marmite rehab, for the fifth time. The treatment isn't working cos all I can think about is spreading thick slavers of Marmite over toast. It's so bad that I would even accept Vegemite at this stage, or even that Aldi cheap knock-off yeast extract. One of the clinic nurses fancies me but he's not my type. Will this torture never end? 😆

Hahahaha you either love it or hate it, there are no in-betweens 😆 RTFO GB!
you unsure if you like it, you put the toast down, but hey lm going try it and let’s see my face,
I'm one of those who love Marmite K! 😋
@@LazyCookPete for sure, but mabe can be used to make gravy, too, now that I'm learning to like it, I was shocked at first but, yessh I think I like it now.
Mix the Marmite with the butter BEFORE you put it on the toast.
Now there's an idea! Thanks 😄
Very beautiful 🌹
I'm glad you like it Number One, thanks!
I just stick my fingers Inside, dip some and lick my fingers lol.
You're obviously a real Marmite enthusiast then 😆
@@LazyCookPete lol my country was ruled by the British so we use a lot of your products and words as well. Me and my brother used to finish one bottle each every 3 days😂
@@Trivette_williams Enjoy!
i tasted it today, its like a blend of espresso and expired cough syrup, needless to say not gonna eat it again.
Hahaha it's an acquired taste that's for sure. It's rather polarising, most people either love it or hate it.
Marmite drizzled over cheese then toasted
Oh very yes Ray! 😋
I love love love marmite... absolutely hate vegimite.. Great on buttery crumpets as well..And very vegan haha...
I love both Marmite and Vegemite Maria. I'm yet to try it on buttery crumpets though. 😋
@@LazyCookPete You don't know what you are missing!
Why does he sound out of breathe?
Medical reasons.
Marmite is french
The yeast extract product named Marmite is English, but you are correct in that the product was named after a French kitchen vessel of the same name. The English adopted French culinary terms for many things after the Norman invasion in 1066 by William The Conqueror.
You love or hate it. I am a hater. The smell makes me gag. But a pity I don't like it, because it is so healthy.
Yes it really polarises people Christel. A lot of vegans use it.
I don’t hate it don’t love it it is ok. Tastes salty and like something burnt to me
It's an acquired taste, it's not for everyone.
It's great with mayo on sandwiches
I agree Hayley! 😋
