This is how I know it's gonna be a helpful video lol. Short run time, straight to the point, not someone trying to make "content" but actually trying to help. Had a bad ankle sprain and trying to go out on Halloween, wanna make sure I can use whatever I need to still make sure I can have fun but not hurt myself again, got a boot and a friend lent me a cane. So helpful! Thank you!
(also, ended up throwing together a last minute The Penguin, from batman, costume so the limp and cane fit the costume 😅 can't wait)

Sprained my ankle today and tried the cane both ways. It obviously did work much better when used on the opposite side of the sprain.

I think your explanation is great. However, you should include the instructions on how to correctly use the apparatus as part of the recommendation especially since intuitively it would be to use it as a support on the weak side.

Wow thank you! I am having a sciatica problem and the doctor told me walking helps, after a week I am like this is nuts I can't walk for more than a minute. So I got a cane this morning and wasn't seeing a difference. Then I found your video and yeah I was using it on the wrong side and wrong height. I can already see a difference just walking around the house. Well, ok I can go three minutes now but still I feel I more optimistic now.

You're so welcome! And yes, keep walking, even multiple short distances everyday will help.

Thank you so much for saying /why/ you shouldn't use it on the same side. I have been poking around for information for a while, (I want a cane for my bad pain flare ups), and everything I've read never mentions why. I am very much a person where if I don't know the reasons behind something I will just do it anyway. I hopefully won't need to use the cane for more than a few days at a time but I will practice how it's supposed to be done once I have one to use. Thanks so much for the informative video!

I can’t put any weight on my right leg and have to use the cane on my right side. Ive been doing that for over a year now. I’ve tried using it on the opposite (left) and I have to go SO slow and I feel like I’m going to fall the entire time. But on the same side as my bad leg (right) I feel balanced. So is this rule only applicable to people using the cane for a little assistance? Because I don’t feel like I could ever get used to using the cane on the opposite side, not without falling down for a while trying. Not to mention going SO slow. With the cane on the same side, I may have the Chester gait but I can at least walk at 90% normal speed, vs 10% using it on the opposite side. Trying to be explanatory as possible.

Thank you for the video! I don't think it's fair to infantilise the patient though, wouldn't it be up to you to explain how to use a support item properly? I've bought my own cane finally but I've been anxious about using it because my grandma had the experience of crutches (due to hip surgery) messing up her shoulder. I feel like most people aren't aware that there's a "wrong" way to use support items. I certainly didn't realise this when I was younger. So I'm trying to inform myself now so I don't cause new issues 😅
