Making any 3D PRINTER (almost) SILENT

  • If you have a 3d printer, that is just annoyingly loud, it turns out, that there is an easy and also quite cheap way to fix it. In this video I show you how I made my CR-10 almost silent for under $30 and not much work at all. The main things were replacing the hotend fan with one from Noctua, and adding vibration dampeners to the stepper motors.
    IMPORTANT: It turns out that the 10mm thick Noctua fan doesn't push quite enough air to keep the hotend cool. You should go either with the 20mm variant, or something like this (slightly louder): www.digikey.com/short/qqmqmf

      I went with the Noctua 20mm fan and there's not enough room. Fan ends up binding against the heat block which then won't allow you to get the fan housing back on. Best bet is to find a quiet fan in the same size as the original (10mm).

    • @KermitDaFrowg
      @KermitDaFrowg 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      on my anet a8 (upgraded to hell) i use a 10mm noctua fan and it works fine, is there any reason why it doesn't on the cr-10, cause im considering getting one as my second printer but want it to be as quiet because they are in my room

    • @KermitDaFrowg
      @KermitDaFrowg 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      also did you get 5v or 12v because i accidentally bought 5v at first for my printer and that stopped it pushing enough air but when replaced by 12v it worked like a dream

      Noise blocker fans are a good alternative and TBH the difference shouldn't affect it enough

      For that reason I ended up using a 12V Noctua fan with 20mm depth (NF-A4x20). I printed a new cover that I found on thingiverse that mimics the apparence of the original cover but allows for more internal room for a thicker fan.

    Putting thick industrial foam under my printer worked brilliantly, it solved all noise coming from the motors. Make sure the foam is very dense otherwise, it may compress too much overtime resulting in more noise.

    Nice video!
    I did the same upgrades about a year ago, and it has been working fine, except for the stepper motor dampeners. I have a feeling they are loosing their elasticity by time, hence the motors get a bit louder. But still much queiter than out of the box printer. Also they are so cheap that I dont mind changing them every six month!

      You can spray some silicone spray from time to time on the rubber. It keeps it nice and soft.

    I've done the VERY not electrically recommended thing of removing the bottom case panel from the control box AND the PSU and added nice 120mm fans in a caddy to the bottom for high airflow. The box is now very quiet and could be more so with a low-noise adapter as the airflow is more than needed. Pair that with the motor dampers and I think I wouldn't be able to hear the printer if I weren't within ~10ft of it. DEFINITELY getting a set of dampers soon.

    A very useful video, thank you for making it. The difference between the stock fans and the Noctua is astonishing, runs almost silent! The dampers on the motors really makes a huge difference too, the before-after really made it apparent. I'm trying to quieten a PSU for a compact form-factor PC and I'm leaning towards Noctua after this. Thanks for the comparison.
    (constructive criticism though, that bed music while you were doing the upgrades was utterly hideous, need something easier on the ear!)

    Stepper motor dampers and print some feet for your printer to isolate the vibrations from the printer and table. Easily eliminates all noise from the motors (except z axis since it hardly moves much to make noise) but from all other videos I found that there’s not much you can do to fix the hot end fan being loud. It’s just the nature of such small fans unfortunately.
