    Thanks Joe for your Winnebago Era review. You have the best persona and speaking voice I've seen, and I have watched a lot of Winnebago views. I loved the Era, but may be too small for my husband who is 6'1". However, we are researching RV's, and we are leaning 99.9 % towards Winnebago. Our favorite so far is the View/Navion. The only negative we see is that is pricey. I hope you will review more Winnebagos. Other questions we are mulling over are the gas vs. diesel controversy and whether to go for a Class A or C. We plan on traveling full time for a couple years anyway. I tend to lean towards 30' or less, mainly because of the nimbleness and drivability aspect. We also want to to a Jeep Wrangler so we can hit some of those desert and off road trails. Keep up the good work you and Kate are doing. I love watching you two. You are so down to earth and unpretentious. Don't forget to mention coffee now and then! ☕️

      +Elaine J Thanks Elaine! Winnebago makes some very nice small RVs. We did review the View th-cam.com/video/5gTLAohFuJY/w-d-xo.html and it's very nice but has one major drawback, very limited carrying capacity. We figured that after the two of us, our dog and a full tank of water, we'd only have about 500 lbs of carrying capacity. The Jeep would impact that too. It's fine for a long weekend but not to live out of.

    Nice job. We really liked the Era, and the RoadTrek is great too, but they we felt they were just to small for us. We ended up getting a Winnebago View 24J, and we love it. Not as small and flexible as the Era, but a good compromise we think. It is fully workable with the slides in, only about a foot longer then the Era, but has a lot more space. The only big draw back is the reduced CCC due to the slide and large coach. Still, it is working well for us seeing that we are not full time. Thanks for the great video's, keep them coming!

    • @CaliforniaTravelVideos
      @CaliforniaTravelVideos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed Robert - the ERA is a beautifully laid out RV, albeit fairly small compared to the View and other 25 foot Class B rigs. Yet for the occasional traveler wanting a smart, sleek, sexy RV it's hard to beat.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Garskof thanks Robert, we agree with your opinions on the View but the CCC is pretty much a deal killer since we are full time and have everything with us. Very happy your enjoying yours and we think Winne did a great job with them.

    I'm always amazed at how much they can put in those things. Looks like a really good option for what you guys want. A bit pricey though. The only negative I saw was the large burner is really close to that cutting board so that board would have to be removed when using that burner I think. Great video.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Good point about the large burner, it would seem to make sense to put that one in the middle or have some extra room on the side to accommodate the larger pots that will use it.

    Hi Joe and Kate! Big fan of yours and really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming. Great review of the Winnebago Era 70x. I own and live in this exact model for the last 10 months. My work as a consultant takes me all over the west coast as well as Idaho/Oregon/Washington. I am a single guy with 2 cats, so the space is perfect for me. As you know, it's 24' long, so longer than your current Hymer. It seems like I have more livable space than what you guys have at the moment? I saw your recent video of you guys van shopping. If you are considering the Winnebago, DO YOUR RESEARCH, especially re: the macerator pump drainage system. This is the only complaint I have, and it's a major one. In the 10 months that I've owned this, the macerator pump has been replaced twice (in the first 6 weeks). I then also had to take it in last December as the pump went from emptying both tanks at 5 minutes, to 1 hour. Normally the pump drain is a fire hydrant volume; but now is just a trickle. Thankfully, it's all been under warranty and covered. I've been at the point where I want to trade this in for a different van that has a gravity fed drain, but I don't think any Class B Van has that type of system? It's a wonderful drive/ride; drives like a SUV. I don't have to tow a car, which is nice. At first the wet bath was small, but I've completely adjusted to it and it works just great for me now; I usually sit on the toilet and shower; just easier for me that way (I'm 49 BTW). If you have other specific questions about this rig, let me know. Happy to help if I can. I'm scheduled for service re: the plumbing, next week. Who knows? I may end up with a different rig; but I hope not.

    Nice Van.. Like the ideas and finish. Another noce thing about the cook top I noticed is that the "drip tray" under the was open into teh sink allowing for washing it down and any "boil over liquid" to go down to the sink.. Very smart idea.
    Good storage for general use such as clothing, food and other essentials. Yep bathroom is a bit tight but you are right shower woudl be only handy for when no site showers are available.
    Hmmm Where would you store the bedding & mattress s topper etc for the bed.. Generally that can take up a lot of space. Was there storage under the side parts of the couch area? or maybe room over behind the bed maybe?
    Yep maybe get rid of at least 1 extra front seat behind the driver and build storage cubbies or something there.. Or a bed for the dog.

    I just saw this model at an RV show last month and I also have to say of the B camper vans I am looking at this 2017 Winn 70x model is in my top 3. However I could do without all that storage space and would prefer more windows. I will not be living in it so I would have nothing more than an overhead bag and supplies to fill maybe have the space. I wish they gave customers an option on some removable cabinets in some areas.

    Hey Joe and Kait!
    We have just discovered your channel and we are enjoying your journey. Well done!
    Have you looked at the Winnebago Fuse yet? It is built on the new Ford Transit chassis. It is more like a Class C but no overhead bunk. It comes with either two twin beds that make a king or a queen on a side slideout. The next generation (2017 and a half if I read correctly) will be upgraded to 5000 lb towing. It is a diesel and gets, supposedly, around 17 MPG.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Anthony, we've looked at the Trend, the problem for us is the lack of carrying capacity. I believe that after a full tank of water, the two of us and our dog, there isn't enough capacity left to bring all of our stuff which doesn't work since we live in the RV full time.

    A relative has the same bedroom layout. They lower the sofa and it meets the cushions at the end of the counter and bathroom making twin beds instead of a king. That way you have two options, or three using the sofa alone as a double bed.

    I currently have the ERA 70X, ( I'm actually standing on the side step in my profile picture) although mine is the 2012 model. The biggest difference I notice is the improvement in technology. I have also removed the two rear captains chairs and replaced the driver side one with a comfortable livingroom style chair I can sit on and look out the side door when opened. The screen door and rear screen would be a nice addition but I don't have those and WGO doesn't make them available for older models ... at least I don't think they do.
    Everything else is fairly similar ... except I notice they replaced the microwave with a microwave/convection oven combination. I'm looking at doing that now, since my microwave doesn't work.
    The only caution I would point out are the plastic "J" clips they are using to secure the overhead cabinets. I have those on my bathroom door now and in the cold weather they have a tendency to break. They get brittle and I've had to replace a few over the years. They may have improved the quality of them?? Don't know.
    As for maneuverability and ease of parking ... the Sprinter style RV can't be beat ... even with the 24 foot length. As long as I can drive through a Tim Hortons drive-thru it good.
    I am looking at getting solar panels to extend my boondocking capabilities ... unfortunately solar was not available when I bought my rig ... another example of the technology improvements. I just don't use campgrounds when I travel so I'm very frugal with my battery power.
    Do you know if WGO is still using the 12V batteries. I have since replaced mine with 2 - 6 volt batteries.
    Great tour ... thanks for sharing.

    Wow, this B van is nice! I can see this being a nice "everyday vehicle" for going to the mall, grocery shopping, or anything else! Being a Virgo, Im very meticulous about EVERYTHING LOL, so this interior layout wouldn't work for me! I love Pleasure Way models, bec they put the galley on the "camping" side of the vehicle! This way you can do a quick unobstructed shoulder check before changing lanes, and you can join in on the conversation in your own campsite, while you're preparing lunch or dinner! If Leo were a Jack Russell or Chihuahua, he'd have no issues with mobility inside the van, he seems to be just a tad to large for this B van! I'd be like Kait and get rid of the two extra Captains chairs up front too! All in all, I really like this Winnie & as usual Joe, you gave an EXCELLENT presentation! 🍻

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point about the galley, not something we thought about. I will say that Leo might actually prefer this over our current coach. He spends most of his time curled up under the driver's seat which is his little den. He loves tight spaces and if/when he needed more room, we can take him outside to stretch his legs!

    How important do you think it is as to where you purchase your RV? We are getting closer to purchasing and we are trying to decide if going factory-direct or with a local company is better. Do you have any suggestions?! Thanks!

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The dealer plays a major role in the RV purchase because they do the final PDI (pre delivery inspection) and should fix any issues they find. Some do it much better than others plus you have to find out how well they support their customers after the sale. Most brands most wont let you purchase factory direct but they will allow you to take delivery at the factory which is something to consider. Every brand and dealer are different so we'd suggest doing your research and going with the option you're most comfortable with.

    IMHO the Era 70C floorplan is best. I believe you two have an no-slide opinion, is it because of the unwritten rule at Walmart ONP? Geesh, I see plenty of slides out at Walmart on all class RV's.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For us its about the added weight and potential issues that having a slide creates. The absolute requirement we have is that the RV is functional with all the slides in, meaning you can get to most things in the RV and sleep without having to put a slide out. We've been quite a few places where we can't put a slide out.

    So why are you two considering a Class B motorhome? Seems really small especially with a dog of Leo's size. What are the advantages of this size home v. a class C or a small travel trailer?

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cindy, in short we don't need all the room we have now and want something that would allow us to be more nimble. The van provides a lot more flexibility on where we can go and park...and Leo finds the tightest places in the RV to hang out, so he doesn't need the room either. We did a video a little while back that explains all of this in more detail: th-cam.com/video/-7Y6dupWnfY/w-d-xo.html

    • @CindyBerkowitz
      @CindyBerkowitz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the response. I'll definitely check out the video. I was wondering because I like the idea of being nimble and small but I have a dog (not as big as Leo) and cat and thought the Class B would be way too small. Maybe we would need to work down to that. Great videos. I've been enjoying them. We are in the planning stages right now.

      It it were me I would go with a used Sportsmobile on the Ford chassis to avoid the Mercedes $$$ and sometimes hard to get repairs and hassles. Something like this, a hardtop model as the pop top is a hassle, wastes storage options, and is cold at night. sportsmobile.com/inventory-details/?inventory_id=489
      Will be fun to see what you end up with.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a cool looking RV! We're considering Sportsmobiles but the issue we have is that they don't have a bathroom. I believe they have a cassette toilet under the sink and an outdoor shower and I don't know how that would work living out of it full time.

    • @vanoramarv4193
      @vanoramarv4193 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, most of the Sportsmobiles have the cassette toilet and no shower, but not all. Our rig is the combination of a Class B with toilet and shower put on a 4x4 chassis from another van.
      So you could look for a Ford Class B and have it either lifted or lifted and 4x4ed. You would be way farther ahead than having one of those low riding urban Class Bs. Ford is the best for lifting and adding 4x4. Not the new Ford Transits though.
      The only modern Class B 4x4 is Mercedes. It would be wonderful to drive until you needed to work on it. Then you have to find a select dealer to work on it and wait in line, then $$$$.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're definitely checking those out and would really prefer a 4x4. Born Free makes a really nice C on the F550 chassis thats 4x4. Something like the Tiger Siberian would be our dream.

    I actually drive the 2017 Travato with the slide away bed in rear. It comes with one of the biggest fridges:) However, you have a dog and I would suggest one of the road treks because it comes standard with the UNDERHOOD generator and auto start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! super quiet- meaning i cannot tell its on PERIOD- sounds like the regualr engine only versus an onan that will wake the DEAD:(

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The onan in our previous RV was definitely loud! As I mentioned in the other comment, Hymer and Roadtrek are on the top of our list because of the layouts and all that cool tech the employ in their RV's.

    If it will tow the Jeep the a Mercedes diesel based unit sounds like a winner. As long as you won't feel cramped. Good luck!

    No, I could never live full time in such a space especially not as a couple. Minimalizing is good but a normal size motorhome is already constrained enough imho. Another thing I dont understand: Why can they have modern nice cabinets in these class Bs but never in the bigger motorhomes who still have the outdated 80ties wood look even if they are brand new...?!

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point about the cabinets but I think I may have an idea as to why the ones in the vans look nicer. The vans are selling very well to people in their 20s and 30s who don't want or cant afford the larger units...hence the more modern looking interiors. We're starting to see some of this design work its way up the chain and now some of the smaller class C's are getting a more modern look. A great example is the new Fleetwood Jamboree that they are putting on the market.

    good video. too small. its good for travelling with airbnb or hotels once in a while. an induction cooktop and cassette toilet..and 4x4 would make that perfect..

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting comment about the induction cooktop, we'd actually prefer gas because of the amount of electricity it takes to run induction and the fact that we like to boondock a lot.

    • @aponoypi
      @aponoypi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you got a point. just don't know if solar will be enough to run them. The webasto diesel cooktops are also neat.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If we had a coach built, like the Tiger, we'd get all diesel appliances. With something that small, its hard to get enough solar and battery power to supply electric appliances. Propane is a great alternative when you have a bigger rig and have the room for a tank, but at the end of the day, if you can supply everything from one tank (diesel) its going to be the best solution in terms of maximizing space.

    Very nice unit... but, 130K for a van..mmmmm .. I think that some of class B maybe pricing themselves out of a market.. But I maybe wrong....

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +bhhardgr01 yep they are pricey for the size but from what we've heard they're selling like hot cakes.

  •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    A bit cramped for full-timing, but there's an appeal to being able to drive and park anywhere and also not spending a fortune on fuel. That said, I can't get over that MSRP: there is so much more room and functionality (normal bathroom, bed, etc.) in a modest gas Class A for the _same_ price that I can't see the appeal of a Class B. At half that price point, I'd see the logic to go for one though.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a premium because of the diesel chassis so a better comparison would be with a diesel pusher (also why the DP's are $60k or more than the gas equivalent). It would be tight so we really need to figure out if its something we would want to do.

    •  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** It sounds like it might be worth a one-week rental to try out the concept. Myself, I think the only reason I'd consider a class B would be for driving it directly, including for groceries and what not, and not worry about a tow vehicle.

    WARNING...to anyone purchasing one of these units.
    I just purchased this exact model, in the dark-leather version.
    There is a huge DESIGN FLAW.
    The grey-water tank cannot be dumped by itself.
    Winnebago "T"ed the grey water dump-pipe into the black-water dump-pipe, but on the BACK side of the black-water dump-valve. So...NOTHING comes out unless the black-water valve is open.
    REALLY Winnebago?
    I hope this helps someone who's about to purchase one of these. I know I sure wouldn't have.
    Who would ever expect a motorhome ICON like Winnebago, to not understand..."you can't always dump BLACKWATER stupid."

  • @1armedguy4

    Sure the so called bathroom has everything one needs but I can't see using such a small uncomfortable space, as for towing possibly a smart car other wise your fuel consumption soars. !!

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way we see it, the bathroom works well for what it is but when we go to campgrounds, we'll use their bathroom/shower instead of the one in the van. It's a compromise, but we see the advantages. Considering we get 6.5 mpg with our current motorhome towing the Jeep, we're not too concerned with the mpg on the van. We've met people who get upwards of 20mpg without towing. If we could even get 12-15 we would be jumping for joy!

      Just finishing 35 days living in our 70X while hiking 400 miles of the AT. We took it on forest service roads and parked it just about anywhere. The Diesel engine handled the winding mountain roads of North Georgia, TN and NC with no issues. We towed a Jeep Wrangler on the interstate at 65 mph and averaged 14.8 mpg. We both took showers everyday and used the toilet everyday. Needed a dump station every 3 or 4 days.

  • @danoq1
    @danoq1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you had a class B you wouldn't need to tow the Jeep.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dan M we've discussed not bringing the Jeep but although it's certainly feasible not to have a tow car I think it would limit us greatly. First issue is that I don't want to have to pack everything up every time we want to go out (and unpack again when we come back). The other issue is that if we are camped on BLM land, whenever we leave, we could potentially lose our spot. At the very least, if we got rid of the Jeep, we'd probably get a motorcycle and pull that in a trailer.

      +Shane Immelt we have one for our larger camera but we don't get a wide enough angle with these small motorhomes. We have a few different mics on our wish list once we save a bit so we don't run into these issues.
