I am not someone who dives too deeply into these Empyrean books. I don't try to connect any dots or claim to understand the intricacies of plot, character, or fantasy development in this series. I am simply a reader giving a few thoughts and opinions on a book I've recently read. I would love to discuss your thoughts - as long as we can do so kindly. :)
I've rated Rebecca Yarros' "Onyx Storm" three stars solely based on my impression of the overall read of the book including plot progression, character development, fresh twists and turns, and ingenuity. #onyxstorm #fourthwing #ironflame #theempyrean #rebeccayarros

In my experience, switching from a trilogy to a 5 book set is very rarely a genuinely good idea. For the most part it means one of two things: the writer doesn't have a solid world building foundation OR money. This seems like a series that could have been a duo.
Thank you for your comment!! And yes, it feels like the publishers were more interested in a money grab once Fourth Wing exploded. Sad. I hope she can recover as I do love the story - just don't like the execution. 🙄
Same as you. I enjoyed the first so much and and less and less. Iron flame already had so much filler and I was so fed up with Violet attitude "you tell me everything or I can't trust you" I'm like, come on girl, this is war, of course there are secrets. RY was good with the interaction of all the caracters, not in Onyx storm. A war is reduced to xaden and violet. Onyx was far from meeting my expectations. Violet now easily lie to her team, lot of confusion in the beginning of the book. No emotionnal involvement. The quest is so boring, the same pattern on each island. They dont look that much for the cure. The finding of Andarna's family lack creativity. And the end? Half of it we see coming, the rest is just WTH? As much I was in the intrigue or theories, here it' s juste omissions for the next book. But my biggest complaint: Is how Violet is never respecting the boundaries of the man she's suppose to love. This is bad. She's sad because he can' t be around her and it's part her fault because she keeps pushing for intimacy in circumstances far from safe....a trilogy filled with adventure would have been enough. She' s a good author, but in this case, I think it' s over her hability (at this moment) to carry such a world for 5 books. So 2,5 star.
Thank you so much for your thoughts and discussion on the book! Spot on! I feel this comment to the quick. I felt as if she had solid starts to thoughts but the execution just wasn't there. Like, are we going to talk about the silver haired girl? Or, the poisoning scene? I get poisoning your opponents at school so you have the upper hand but why would she have thought to poison people (especially her boyfriend's mother!) who you're trying to ally with? So confusing. I've responded to your other comment as well and look forward to connecting with you again in the future! 💕
Onyx Storm was such a filler book. The amount of half sentences that they never explain what they’re realizing was frustrating. And the fact that they go on this entire quest for half the book and basically nothing comes of it was such a let down. I spent half the book bored and the other half left me completely confused. I agree. Three stars is being generous lol. I was very disappointed and honestly not sure I really care what happens from here on out.
Thank you for your comment! And, yes to everything you said! 💕 I'm stuck on the fact that I do really want to know how it ends...🤣 Which is why I'm so disappointed in how drawn out it is for no reason. There should be more answers at this point.
I felt that way, bored thru much of book #2 as well..lol
Completely agree!! Xaiden was really annoying to me this in one. So many missed opportunities to make this good.
It just didn't make sense. 🥺 Will you be continuing? I will, but I hope it gets better!
Thank you so much for your comment!💖
Completely agree! Thanks summarising it so well
I only just finished it today as it sadly felt quite tedious to get through, and I was also the same as you and loved the Fourth Wing
I feel you! It’s so disappointing after loving Fourth Wing! 💖 Thank you so much for your comment!
Totally agree with everything. It's so sad how bad the book was. So many unimportant details and not enough of the important stuff. Like there was always happening something but at the same time nothing happened.
Yes, always something happening but nothing at the same time. Hopefully, the next book will have some answers. 🙄
Thank you so much for your comment. I appreciate you. 💕
I completely agree. I kept waiting for something to happen and for some resolve, and nothing did. We just ended with more questions than we started with. She should've stuck to the trilogy. 650 pages was plenty to completely wrap this up. Then she would mention things and make you question it, then just not talk about it again. I really hope she drops the 5 book thing, though, and wraps it up with the next one. I can't do another filler. 3 stars from me, too.
Thank you so much for your comment!
Yes! Wish she would have stuck with QUALITY in a trilogy instead of QUANTITY in the series. Feels like a money grab. So sad.
lol I loved it, 5 stars for me. I love when series kind of give you bits and pieces and foreshadowing that (hopefully) all come together in the end. It’s what makes a top tier series in my opinion, Harry Potter and TOG are two of the best written series out there and the authors did such an incredible job piecing everything together for the final books. And you have to read them multiple times to get everything and those are the kind of series I enjoy most. I don’t want everything laid out for me (personally).. I think people who loved fourth wing wanted more of what the first book brought, which was romance and a bit of naivety and lightheartedness but in that book we knew there was more to come, more corruptness, a lot of stuff the reader could sense but were not privy too, and both iron flame and onyx storm are very heavily based on politics and plot driven rather than character driven. But the character development we got, the relationships that have strengthened, even the backstory and history of Violets family, of Xadens family, I love the way the books have been playing out. I get people being disappointed but I never go into books thinking it’s going to be the same as its first in the series, books and plots and characters HAVE to evolve to drive story and not make it so monotonous IMO.
Thank you so very much for your thoughtful comment. I appreciate your insight on the book. I definitely agree with you on many of your points and appreciate anyone's rating of their read. We all read for different reasons, as you mentioned, which give us a different rating. I love that. Again, thank you for your comment. I hope others read it too!💕
Same. I loved fourth wing because it was easy to follow but it wasn’t dumbed down. Iron flame felt like it was trying to build but it did start to get muddled. Onyx storm was a mess. Nothing happens really and everything was confusing.
Have u read any N.galilea books?
Thank you so much for your comment! 💕 Yes to all of what you said. I just hope we get some answers in the next book. I do truly like this story and concept... I just need more answers than questions.
I feel the same way! I’m currently reading onyx storm (only on page 50) and I’m having such a hard time getting through it. I’m so confused on all the names thrown around and it feels like we’ll get the same filler nonsense that happened in iron flame. 🙄
This really should not be a 5 book series and it does feel like a cash grab.
"same"..lol...you're spot on, way back when I think it was suppose to be a duology (great, I'm in), then a trilogy (okay)..now five (a publishing move since book #1 made money), and the story does not need five books..lots of filler. I've rolled like you, 5 star, then 4, now 3 😳
Thank you so very much for your comment! I appreciate hearing from readers who feel the same as there are so many out there that would die on the Onyx Storm Hill.
Fourth Wing was fantastic... but since then it's all been a money grab, unfortunately. Good for RY, I guess. I just hope the rest brings back the magic of the first. Thanks again!
I just finished Iron Flame in anticipation of Onyx Storm...but now I'm going to wait to read it after she publishes the last 2 books. How can they call this a "trilogy" if it's a 5 book series??? I thought this was going to be the last book in the series. Now I'm finding out there are 2 more books that won't be published for at least another year or two...
I totally feel you. It's a money grab. I'm assuming the publishers saw the explosion of Fourth Wing and pressed for more. It's sad because it's a great story, it's just not executed well. Thank you so much for your comment. I look forward to connecting with you again sometime!💕
Agreed filler book i was emotionally disconnected in this series. I ALSO feel like she listened to a bunch of negative reviews and tried to write it the way readers suggested and it fell flat because her whole writing style changed I will finish the series bit kinda DISSAPPOINTED
Thank you for your comment!! Yes, this!
I felt like there were good ideas but then they fell flat and weren't executed fully - as if she was trying to introduce a bunch of ideas but then never finished the thought. So confusing!
I didn’t know it was originally supposed to be a trilogy. Now I wish it would have stayed that way. This was a total filler book but like a drawn out filler book
Yes! So disappointing! Total money grab. Instead of making something wonderful and QUALITY, it's debased to subpar reading all for QUANTITY. 🤮 It's too bad.
Fully agree with this! I had to dnf it 1/3 through because I was losing interest. I also don’t know if it’s me or the book but I could not get through the poor writing. Everything was spoon fed to me like I was a child who couldn’t infer things and the fact that every chapter essentially ended with a “…” drove me insane.
Thank you so much for your comment!!💕 I have heard a lot of people miffed about the ellipsis (...) I read this via audiobook so I had no idea they were even used. What I can say, regarding the writing, is that I was often confused about what was happening and there were multiple times same phrases were used. I'm hoping the next one is better but I'm not going to hold my breath.
Thanks again for commenting! 💕
I suspect Rebecca doesnt have the series plotted all the way out. This what is going on with Rothfuss and Martin. These people just dont know what they are doing. Here is where the books get longer between release or never.
This is so true!! Thank you so much for saying this! Makes perfect sense! 👍
I feel the same way … maybe a 2.5
👍 Thank you so much for your comment and rating. Half of me wonders if I need to reread it to make sure I'm not crazy, but then I think ... There are other books I could be reading! 🤣
I totally agree with you and I am not even done with the first half of the book! Total filler book. Honestly do not know if I will be reading the next, not excited for the next one.
Thank you so much for commenting! And so true! I feel like my eagerness to read is solely based on reading before spoilers can affect my own reading. I'm not going to hold my breath, but I hope the next one is better. 💕 Thank you again for your comment.
Great analyses. The way info can be dragged out is unfortunate. LOVE to hear your take on LEAD me where the light is ours ~ Very inspirng book ALSO you may like Marissa Meyer fantasy
Thank you for your comment and recommendations! 💕 Yes, I've read the Lunar Chronicles and Loved them!
Same I just tried to start it and only got 36 minutes in so you lasted longer than me!
It's rough for sure! 💕 Thank you so much for your comment! I hope there's something else that's keeping your attention! ☺️
