Honestly one of Floyd's best albums. More cohesive in theme and tone, it just works. It's effectively a Waters solo album, but it has Gilmour's guitars so that's good enough for me.
I wasn't aware of the band's troubles surrounding this album when I heard it. I only knew that the music touched me deeply.

Aside from David's very good--if limited--contributions, this album also heavily relied upon the talents of the late, great Michael Kamen. Kamen did the orchestral arrangements and filled in for Richard on keyboards. Call it a Floyd album, call it a Roger solo record, I don't really care; in my book it's a beautiful set of songs regardless.

In this album Richard Wright was fired. Last time for Roger´s ego; good album, but too much personal Roger´s songs. The others members don´t had an opinion, he believed the band belongs he. Great musician, great writer, but with and huge ego. Pink Floyd without Richard is not a Pink Floyd

I have been listening to Pink Floyd for 36 years from the age of 14. They are quite literally a massive part of my life for many reasons. The Final Cut is just unbelievable and yes I think it is underrated, one of my favourites along with The Wall, Animals and Wish You Were Here. I saw them in Rotterdam in 1994 when Sam Brown sang Great Gig in the Sky, just unreal. "The child is grown the dream is gone" is my favourite line of any song, The Floyd really were/are stone cold geniuses.

The Final Cut album has been called the third part of The Wall, so many of the songs reflect further in Roger loosing his father during WWII and also further on the relationships in his life perhaps. The song is certainly full of emotions and I think is brilliantly reflected in the solo from David Gilmour. David has said that by this time he felt like his part in the album was that of a paid musician vs being part of Pink Floyd. So maybe the frustrations he was feeling also came out in the solo.
All I can say is that remembering back to when the album came out, I remember really liking it.

That is the official video for this song. That's Roger Waters in the video with half of his face covered by darkness.
Once you see The Wall movie you'll notice some familiar faces in this video that are in the movie.
This is regarded as a Waters solo album under the Pink Floyd name and it's the last Floyd album before Waters officially left the band.
A lot of these songs didn't make it on The Wall album and Gilmour was quoted as saying, "if it wasn't good enough for The Wall why make another album with them?" That's not word for word but it's close. I don't have the actual quote memorized but I know that was Gilmour's thoughts about this album.
I love this album personally and think it deserves way more credit than it gets!

Has no one explained the song for you yet... O.k. here...its about "Pink"... The young boy in the video Another brick in the Wall who gets slapped by the teacher, poems everybody poems ..the laddie reckons himself a poet. Its about him alienating himself from the rest of the world.. it is and always will be one of the greatest songs ever written about the struggle of life.
Its not a sequel to The Wall but more like an inside look into the mind of a young boy struggling to adjust to society and all its dark places, finally getting to the point of no return, but again ... struggling. ..... Hope this helps.❤

    FYI....song facts;
Written by Roger Waters, this song is about Pink, the main character in Pink Floyd's album The Wall. The song describes what it's like to alienate yourself from the world. Pinks tells us about his young life, and how hard it was for him to socialize with humanity while he was behind his wall. The final part of the song tells us how he almost killed himself. The song is pretty much an epilogue to The Wall, telling the story of Pink while he was "behind the wall."
Many believe this album to be the sequel to The Wall album, but it is mainly songs that were written from a narrative point of view for the 1982 movie, which starred Bob Geldof in the leading role. >>
"The Final Cut" is a movie term used to describe the last edit before the film is sent to theaters. Having the final cut means ultimately deciding what's in the film. In the context of this song, the term relates to suicide, as Pink declares, "I never had the nerve to make the final cut," meaning he couldn't work up the courage to end his life.
The Final Cut was a pivotal album for the band. Their previous album was The Wall in 1979, which was wildly successful but led to tensions in the group as Roger Waters asserted control. The grandiose tour that followed - a spectacular artistic achievement - was Waters' brainchild.
When Pink Floyd began work on The Final Cut, it was spearheaded by Waters, who wrote all the songs and did nearly all the vocals. The theme of the album was the repercussions of war.
The album was Waters' last with Pink Floyd. He released a solo album called The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking the following year; the next Pink Floyd album (without Waters) came in 1987 with A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

i'm not sure how much forethought went into the making of the album, but roger waters may have known this was going to be the last pink floyd album...with him anyway. the band was not functioning as a complete unit. rick wright was gone altogether. the last song on the album, "two suns in the sunset", ends with the line "ashes and diamonds, foe and friend,we were all equal in the end" makes me believe roger knew it was over. on the last song of the last pink floyd album he would work on, the last two words were "the end". for him it was the final cut. as for the final cut song itself, many people have lived that sense of despair, myself included. whatever it was that brought us back from the brink of making the final cut, in the song's case the phone ringing, there is a sense of relief that it wasn't yet our time.that hope is not lost, and we made it through another day.

I love this track. Took me quite a while to get used to the whole album, but when it clicked, it really clicked. I wore out two vinyl albums, a cassette tape and now still play the CD. The desperation in the singing is a triumph - and that guitar solo! The band was all but spilt up when this album came out.
Some of the tracks on this album were intended for The Wall, but Gilmour felt they weren't good enough. When Waters wanted them on this album, Gilmour still felt they weren't right. No matter. This album is another one that needs a full listen because it all links together like many of their other albums.

Ironically, this was not the early PinK Floyd album, in-fact it was the last one. Funnily, most will say that it was the most underrated album in the Pink Floyd canon yet it’s a multi-platinum masterpiece.
It’s true that it would be hard to make out of the song as usual this was last song from the concept album Pink Floyd - The Final Cut.
The album covers England vs Falkland war, Margaret Thatchers approach and then climbing capitalism. The entire album as usual written by Roger Waters who was the singer in the video.

its from the same time he wrote the wall, this song is very much about a person behind an emotional wall, the guard dogs, shot gun in the hall, and such are all obstacles to a person getting see their true feelings. The struggle to let out those feelings and the doubt of how the other person in a relationship will react, leave and take the children away or take him home. In the end he never gets the nerve up to do it.

Once again, respect for the courage to play something from it. Thanks. Very difficult topic; I belong to a generation that always judges an album as a whole and listens through it.
First of all, something positive: Waters dealt with his father's war years, the situation at the time with the Cold War and - which many English people were reluctant about - the Fakland War under Thatcher's regime. Actually a very ambitious project.
On the other hand, the democratic group chemistry has not been right for a long time: see, among other things, song credits since Animals, dismissal of Rick Wright (who was floating around on a Greek island) etc.
Musically I was disappointed, more of a musical (partly on The Wall, then even more so on the solo albums) and the uniform, broken voice gets annoying over time, let alone the trivialities that Waters has been saying lately.
Gilmour couldn't/didn't want to tax anything apart from a few short solos, and then stood out for his very questionable comments on this album, Thatcher and Fakland: the old dusty Sir of the old UK; but thought about it, with Rick Davis Supertramp on the political song Brother Where You Bound in 1985; maybe he's not as one-dimensional as I imagined him to be. Realization: So don't take me too seriously; enjoy good music. Have a good start to the week everyone✌.

The video is relevant to the song.
I won't explain it fully, but basically during world war 2 the men went to war and it was the women that kept the country going. You are seeing women in the video that rallied the nations and are important figures in history that played a key role in world war 2. Some other women there as well.

Hi guys another great reaction hard to decrypt a pink Floyd song on a first listen the song is in three sections it starts painting the picture of a secret service soldier or hit man for the military then on the gun shot it goes back to before ww2 when he was a young man with nothing but girls on his mind then the final section is his return after his service haunted by his dreams and the things he’s had to do scared to open up to his wife with the fear she will leave and driving to the point off attempting suicide but then the phone rings hope it was his wife the video to me seems like a montage of the war effort and what the post war dream means to him people enjoying them selves and being free to do as they like keep up the good work thanx 👍

dave gilmour has said this is/was one of his least favorite projects of their catalog, me, personally, thank GOD IN HEAVEN for it, its very under rated, under appreciated, and for me one of my favorites, gilmours guitars combined with rogers lyrics and heart wrenching strained, emotional voice/singing, he not only writes genius lyrics, but he has ultimate control of his voice, from soft to strained, and controls it perfectly to quite a stirring effect, sadly its the only thing in their catalog sans richard, i could only imagine what his participation would have added to this already perfect masterpiece

Mmm, this is really a Roger Waters album, about his farther in World War 2. Sadly, there was a lot of friction between the members, which led to pink Floyd carrying on without their vocalist and bassist Roger.

the final cut. my take is two fold. One its a man almost committing suicide but a phone call stopped him AND this was waters final album with pink floyd so it was the final cut for him. I could be wrong.

Yeah, this is one of those where the video really didn't have much to do at all with the song, so I wouldn't be looking at it for clues to the meaning of the song ;)

Can I suggest a reaction!? Pls react to Gabriel Henrique's performance on AGT. He got the Golden Buzzer! You never react to him, and he will probably go to the finals. Check him out!!! Tomorrow will be his live show, he is in the sem-finals!!!!!! Please vote for Gabriel!!!!

I can understand how the other band members were getting bored with Waters writing the same album over and over again. Like all bands, Pink Floyd had their run. 3 decent songs on the album imo.

The song feels like it's from the same label as the previous album The Wall. However, it's also a collection of songs that didn't make it onto The Wall for various reasons. Neither Gilmour nor Mason were ever thrilled with this release. Waters had by this time definitely usurped the leadership position in the band (he had already fired Wright) and had become insufferable. Even on tour with The Wall, he didn't communicate with the others at all - he slept in another hotel, flew to gigs alone by helicopter and didn't talk to anyone. Unlike The Wall, David didn't even argue with Roger about creative things in TFC anymore. This period was devastating for the band. And the entire album The Final Cut is considered by all to be Waters' first solo album. However, Gilmour hardly sings on it either (he sang most of the songs up to that point). Of course he played all the guitar parts on the album very well, but that was the end of it. And that was the definitive end of Pink Floyd's most famous era.
