Oh man, that is insanely wonderful of you to say. Thank you so very much for those kind, kind words. I'm really glad you enjoyed the videos. It's all about the music, as you know, but it is wonderful music to play and listen to. Thanks again and happy Thanksgiving to you. Cheers!
This is the best vocal-piano rendition of Supper's Ready I've heard on TH-cam. Again, you've managed to singlehandedly combine the skills and take the best parts of Peter Gabriel (vocal, flute), Phil Collins (backing vocals), Mike Rutherford (guitars, bass), Steve Hackett (guitars) and Tony Banks (twelve string guitar, keyboards). Thanks for sharing and making my day, mr. Tanner.
All prog gems were born acoustically and at one hand. I am very grateful to mr. Tanner for these "back to the egg" misical pieces - listening to genious music this way is so good that I sing along))
Wow! Prodigious effort, this, Ian! To get that close playing a bashed up piano and singing at the same time, with just the natural reverb of the room on your voice is astonishing. Best of all, it's so musically performed (very rare on TH-cam!). Please, can we have loads more like this. Thank you - that has made my day.
back in 1979, as a freshman music ed major at fredonia, my suitemates played the original album for me once they realized I had imbibed in a fairly substantial amount of psychedelics. I spent the next 23 minutes in the most unbelievable bliss imaginable. I eventually got a few music major friends together to cover this extraordinary piece in the college pub. I still get goosebumps listening to the piece. 35 years later I once in a while and sing the entire piece. your chords are more accurate
Ian, your musicianship, sense of humour and wicked genius at interpreting GENESIS classics like this is so special and spiritual. Thank you for sharing your fine interpretations. Everyone is very grateful for what you are presenting.. Amy
So here it is almost 10 years after you posted this. I have known Genesis since 1975 when I first saw them on Don Kirschner rock concert. And always loved their music. I have only started to learn to play this song. Your version is quite good to help me learn it. Thanks for posting this! Your playing is great. I know Tony Banks is a great keyboard player and songwriter but your version is very good. I am sure he would be happy to hear this one being played in this way. I also enjoyed your Dream Theater comment at the end of part 2. Another fine band inspired in some way by Genesis.
Ian, You are FANTASTIC !!! I am a Genesis Lover from "back in the day." As a 52 y/o who has experienced Gabriel-era Genesis in my high school days, I can tell you that the performances you provided here are priceless. I played this on my Smartphone last night while spending Thanksgiving at family's house. I had to sleep there and this was remarkable as I was in the guest room soaking up your incredible talent. Your rendition of Hairless Heart is stunning, the YES classics are mind-boggling too!
WOW! Totally Awesome. One of my all time favorites. Never heard it covered before. Would love you to do more Zappa, Punkies Whips was great! Wait... just saw The battle of epping forest on the side bar which I'm going to watch next, your killing me LOL
Great job! I remember many years ago when I first heard 'Supper's Ready' thinking it was one of the weirdest pieces of music...after a few listens, i rushed home from school to hear it...Brilliant..thanks for posting and your passion for a true piece of prog rock.
honestly i cried listening to your version.....i am a pretty bad piano or guitar player but if i would have one song i could play it would be this one.........when i will retire i will try to play the first part....you are very good and inspiring....the song itself is inspiring.....firth of fifth isnt bad either....in my dreams i play both... then i could die....
Ian - You are amazing. I can play a little piano. So I can really appreciate how talented you are. Playing and singing at the same time is not easy. Really remarkable.
Great!!!! Best piano arranger I've ever seen. You have saved me a lot of work, to learn and play this at my piano, as nobody is able to perform a better version than this...great fun when commenting your 'mistakes', i wouldn't have noticed them, the overall feeling is absolutely brilliant!!!
Hi Ian, I've been watching and listening to your Supper's Ready and Lamb videos all night. Really excellent work, and obviously a labor of love. Congrats and thanks!!!
Wasn't sure what to think when it started. I certainly wasn't expecting vocals and piano. I love this rendition because it's so honest and unpretentious and full of heart. Brilliant!
Nice work, Ian! I was anticipating you asking 'a flower?' at the end. Should have done it. :) Thanks for continuing the Supper's Ready cause! Looking forward to the rest.
What a fantastic rendition of this song. Play difficult passages and singing it too. What a star. Great work mate. Don’t ever worry about any of the mistakes you made. It is a fantastic effort.
I've listened to that song over and over for years...I know it well. I am non-musician wannabe, but I know what I like, pun intended, and this I like. This is a hard one to pull off and especially without accompaniment. I say well done, sir!
Let me tell you mt brother.... That was F--KING GREAT! I loved that... Your playing and vocals were spot on! Gabriel would be proud my man... Keep the early Genesis stuff coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phenomenal. Also your Genesis videos have been so helpful in me practice the drum parts of these songs. Playing along to these videos is much better than playing along with the actual album tracks since I can hear my own drumming without competing with Phil haha.
Great job , good voice. I have play with you all along the track whith my 12 strings guitar and it was almost ok, i like when you turn back and said " hasn't it" . It was a point of reference to begun my arpeggios at the good moment; this part with three 12 strings guitar and keyboard are really hypnotic. See you or hear you soon. Philippe from Les Issambres (south of France).
WOW... JUST AMAZING MAN ! I'm a 16 year old Brazilian boy and i really really love Genesis... When i saw your video on the suggested videos list i confess i wasnt expecting something that epic and beautiful friend ! Great job ! :D
The first time I heard this was @1976 when I went out and bought the Foxtrot album. I listened to it over and over again because I loved the album as a whole but I must admit, it is only when I see you actually performing this piece that I can truly appreciate what a fantastic group of musicians Genesis really were (are). Another brilliant video Ian, mistakes and all...and I'm sure that Tony made mistakes playing live too but he (fortunately) had 4 other musicians to hide behind.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I can't take it, it's just too good !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am blown away by your fantastic cover of Supper's Ready... your piano playing flows so beautifully - all the more amazing considering that you learn your music by ear! Some parts gave me the goose bumps! Somehow, hearing this piece on piano brings out the complex melodies even more clearly. Please do some more Genesis covers. Firth of Fifth would be great for example, or Riding the Scree. Now that would be a challenge! Your singing is excellent too: very expressive and so similar to Gabriel's rendering of this song! How do you manage to sing so well while playing those complex notes? That is quite a feat, Ian! Thank you so much for posting your excellent cover. Please carry on - you have some big fans on here! :-)
junejanna Hello there, and thanks so much for your very kind words. I appreciate the encouragement and it means a lot that people like you take the time to watch something like this! Very cool. First off... I did a piano/vocal version of the entire Lamb Lies Down album, so you'll see my clumsy version of Riding The Scree there. I haven't done any other videos for a long time, mostly because of a busy work like and not having time to devote to it anymore. I can play Firth, but it's not very good. That opening is really hard for me technically. How do I sing and play? I don't know. This is the one thing I'm good at, so it comes easily to me. Ask me to figure out a 15% tip at a pub and I'll be useless!
incredibleeeeeee
Don't know which one I enjoy better, this or the original? Just an amazing performance Ian! You're gifted.
So kind of you. Thanks so much.
Oh man, that is insanely wonderful of you to say. Thank you so very much for those kind, kind words. I'm really glad you enjoyed the videos. It's all about the music, as you know, but it is wonderful music to play and listen to.

Thank you so much. Really glad you've enjoyed the videos. I wish I had more Zappa stuff too, and more time to get those pieces good enough to post!!
