The faster than usual tempo allows one thing: Edvard Grieg could write music in larger forms that would allow his melodies to shine forth like precious gems. The musical structure of the concerto is a marvel of construction (that aspect is seldom mentioned). Even the auspicious piano at opening measures finds itself recurring in the development section. The reason I extol this concerto is because the beauty sounds SPONTANEOUS never contrived.
Liszt adored the whole thing especially the key change st 25:40 where he yelled out while playing st first sight (another genius) " that's Swedish banko!!!" which must have amused the Norwegian composer--- but he got the compliment of course and was thrilled !!

This is amazing being able to see the score and to see how difficult this music is. To play this requires flawless technique as well as artistic interpretation.

My dear friend, Aldo Lopez Gavilan will be performing this Grieg Concerto with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra this month on Saturday, March 29, 2022. Also, please check out the film/doc about him & his violinist brother, Ilmar Gavilan. Both grew up in Havana, Cuba as child prodigies. The film/documentary is entitled, "The Brothers/Los Hermanos". It's brilliant & a dedicated story of their desire to perform together when each was reunited in America!
Nobody does it better than Michelangeli on the concerto especially the cadenza from the first movement.Those flying forte octaves just humanly impossible !
It is if I never heard it before. Exuberant, refreshing. The sentiment is felt because it is contested by vigorous themes. Such contrast brings new life to an inspired masterpiece.
I completely agree! I used to not really like this piece because it was played too ordinary, boring. It was exactly this performance that made me like the piece!
This was definitely recorded using his personal Steinway.. listen to that magnificent tone throughout the middle register, and then the booming low notes.. most definitely a Steinway!

I randomly found this looking for works by Edvard Grieg to show my students and that opening caused me to get flashbacks to practicing it for my role as Sparky in Forever Plaid.
Cesar Aranda actually rachmaninoff was inspired by Griegs concerto when he wrote his first concerto. In general Griegs Piano Concerto was his favorite and he loved to play it.
Grieg wrote a concerto with an abundance of unsurpassed melody. Nonetheless a vibrant structure holds the piece together with logic and emotional drama. Not one second is superfluous. Every note contributes to an unforgettable experience.
I came from the book "The Children of Willesden Lane". And woah, I looked up that song..its pretty amazing. You should read it. Aaron Lewin was my favorite character💜💜💜 fly high..aaron💜💜

This is supposed to be one of the easier piano concertos in the rep. I can't see why. Sure looks hard to me. Also, this concerto literally killed someone once: the pianist Simon Barere dropped dead during a performance of this piece in 1951 ("DUM! da-da-DUM! da-da-DUM da-da-DUM da-da-DEAD!"). Betcha Beethoven can't say that about any of his concertos.
What about Haydn's various concertos. I've had a listen to a few of them and they sound not so technically demanding as this one is. There's heavy ornamentation in part of one movement I am thinking of (the third movement from a D major concerto), but that doesn't seem overly virtousic either. Maybe everyone is referring to romantic repertoire? I'm a classical pianist by nature as well (mostly have played romantic works), so I am fairly familiar with how piano technique works.
Very well constructed, attractive, accessible and textbook piano concerto. Imho though the second movement is a bit uninteresting. Does anyone agree? You are welcome not to.

One of my early childhood memories.
My mother was very accomplished at the piano and I remember her playing portions of this beautiful concerto.
Grieg doesn’t have that extensive composition, but almost all of his pieces are very well known

The whole piece is, IMO, way too fast, but the technical brilliance is insurpassable.

His first concerto opening is similar to Grieg’s opening which in itself is similar to Schumann’s opening

Very well constructed, attractive, accessible and textbook piano concerto. Imho though the second movement is a bit uninteresting. Does anyone agree? You are welcome not to.
