- I played my first pro pickleball tournament and waited until the very last minute to train for singles. In this video, we walk through my experience cramming last minute for the tournament, including how to drill, how to come up with a game plan, and how it went. If you want to get decent at singles, fast, this is the video for you.

10:01 - he listed the strategies for serve, return, third and fourth balls.
1) Serve - serve deep to earn weak return
2) Return - return deep to prevent good pass
3) 3rd Ball - Strike. To have good pass and also prevent volley winner. Strike means hitting on the ball as it bounces up. The projectile should be flat and fast into opponent court and pass the opponent. There is no curve up to give time for opponent to reach the ball and make a good volley.
4) Fourth Ball - Stick. Stay with the ball. Shadow the ball. Do whatever it takes to follow the ball and reach it in time. The objective is to prevent pass, and hit winners.
I love your “no quarter” and “no BS” narratives no matter the subject at hand. The candor always feels fresh. Thanks. I’m a fan.
Just want to say I love your videos! And your breakdowns have helped me move up to 4.5 when I was stuck at 4.0 for a while. Especially the video where you pointed out the triangle theory that happens during hand battles. 🙌
That's amazing! 5.0 in no time :D
Jumping in here to say your videos are intuitive to players that have historied backgrounds in racquet/ paddle sports and to keep it up! As a person moving through advanced levels, your videos help me process my own ideas and research in a smart way. Keep up the videos!
Great video. I appreciate your humble transparency and how you take us through your thought process before, during, and after the event. I am a former singles tennis player who is still improving my soft game in doubles. I agree they feel like entirely different sports… and far fewer people interested in singles it seems.
IMO the shot you absolutely need at the 4.5+ level is the backhand cross court roll. Backhand cross court drives in singles just don't make a lot of sense as there is just such a small margin for error. My philosophy for backhands in singles is drive down the line and roll cross court. You don't necessarily hit winners with the backhand roll (although it does happen) it just opens the court so much for you to sneak in behind it and get a cross court winner to your forehand side.
Honest and simple. Good content, thanks.
Love how you break things down to super simple parts. Also love the honesty about what you don’t know.
Great videos! Love your narration, very informative! Thank You
what ive found is that you should play singles like it was tennis and throw your doubles training out the window. reverse direction on your opponent first before he does on you. put him under pressure by making him run more than you and go for the passing shot. use tennis point construction to decide the right shot. inside out forehands. and of course serving to his weaker side. left right left right. and sometimes left left right patterns. but you know all this already cuz you are a good tennis player. the more you put him on the run the more shots will get returned to the middle. be an aggressive baseliner.
Another excellent breakdown. I have been sharing your videos with all the guys I train with. (I hope they ignore them, TBH.)
😉
I got Silver in my first singles tourney ... by working my way through the losers bracket. It took me the first game to realize, "Singles is NOTHING like Dubs! But it is more like tennis singles." And pickleball Dubs isn't really much like tennis Dubs, IMO.
I keyed on deep serves right AT my opponent (if he didn't have an obvious weak side) and deep DTL returns.
Be prepared for a LOT of side outs in singles.
Very good video. Accurately summarised fundamendal techniques and steps for playing singles. Love it, and benefit from it.
Ya, I loved your video, I am in the same boat. I am registered to play singles 70+ 4.0. in 14 days. first tournament, when I registered in the PB world in Febuary, I was in AZ. thinking I would continue to drill like I was. We have been traveling across the U.S. the past eight months, 6 of those months I never saw a court. Did not make it to 4.0. Anyway, moving forward, thanks for the tips.
Another great video. It seems 3rd shot drive should be used much more often in singles than in doubles. To me, a dipping drive with buggy whip finish is a more effective option than a 3rd shot drop especially in singles.
Great video. This gonna help my game tremendously. Thanks
Hard work and practice has paid off beating Ben Johns and getting the finals WELL DONE :) x
This was super interesting, thank you
Could you clarify the 4th shot stick? Haven’t really seen that terminology used elsewhere. Great video! Going to use these pointers for my own singles rec play!
sorry that's tennis jargon - means to really hit the ball vs just block it so it's more penetrating and difficult for the opponent to hit a good pass off of
Great videos! So helpful! Thank you!
My thoughts exactly. I was asked to join a singles tournament but I declined cuz even though i've just won a mixed doubles tourney for my first tourney, just 3 months into this sport, I've played tennis tournaments growing up, I knew this is a different animal. I need to watch more singles games and videos like this. Thanks for posting this. I love hitting big serves but I stopped as I was told that it's not helpful much in doubles. But now someone told me it's more important in singles. QUESTION: do you use the same paddle you play with in DOUBLES when you play SINGLES? I'm thinking having a more elongated paddle with longer grip is better in singles, and in singles I'd use a hybrid with shorter grip. Or maybe it doesn't matter?
I have started using different paddles exactly as described and find it useful. The down side is that I suspect I’m over hitting my doubles paddle subconsciously because it doesn’t deliver as much speed I get from my singles paddle. You may find there’s a learning curve. I am also curious to see if there’s a difficult transition between playing singles on Friday (in tourney) with that paddle and playing doubles Saturday…
Drill, drill, drill drives from deep, especially the deep backhand. Most valuable drive is probably high spin, medium speed that lands about a foot past the NVZ.
Practice using your opponent’s incident backspin as your outgoing topspin. “Don’t fight spin.”-Morgan Evans (to me, in person).
This is just at the end of your video.
I't's Monday and I'm playing in my 2nd singles tournament. I'm 74, have played in many doubles tournaments, but not for a couple years. Game day is in 4 days on Friday. I've had the identical thought process you had for your match. I've got an excellent serve, a really decent return, which I can usually heat deep to the back corner, but that's where I lose the advantage if there backhand is at all good. That shot to the vack corner is great in doubles, but not as great in singles. I'm thinking I should go for the return to the middle to eliminate big angles.
What do you think? I'm probably going to be more mobile than most in my group, so should I stick to the deep corner to their backhand, come up as much as possible, and go for the cutaway for my 4th?
Help! Arthur
Neat tips, thanks!
Love it
Singles is definitely a different beast. I'm always impressed by your analytical approach to everything. It's impressive. But I don't get the how the video still (forget what its called) relates to the video...
this court is unreal, where is it at?
Great info and nice and humble. One suggestion: ummm. Not so close camera shots 😅
heard! thanks for the feedback. have fixed in the newer vids!
I agree singles is a completely different sport than doubles… also, I feel like playing outdoor singles is significantly different than playing indoor singles… I feel really in control of my shots in indoor… anyone have similar experience?
SURPRISE - I think most players, don’t realize this (maybe I’m wrong -we’ll see) but, surprisingly to me at leaset, in all the top player matches `i have watched and counted shots - the fact is, that provided the players are more or less at the same level in the same level, MORE THAN 50% OF THE POINTS ARE WON AS A RESULT OF A MISTAKE - AN ERROR. Where I see an. Obvios forced error, or a clear winner they go down as WINNERS in my little book. If I’m not sure, then I dont count the rally at all, OR I go bk and watch it, 2-3 times, and make a decision, or decide that one doesn’t get scored.
I’ve watched dozens of pro-matches, and it’s the same with these guys as it is with ordinary club players - it’s MORE than 50% mistakes - as high as 2/3 sometimes.
I will watch another 10-20 games just to be sure, but, never once have I seen a match where the number of winners exceeeds the number of loosing shots - unless of course a player is having a real easy match- then clearly winners are by far the majority.
AM I MISSING SOMETHING? Try it for yourself. Makes me want to play differently.
Chris
Phuc plays in the ppa main draw in singles and is a 6.2. Dudes legit
the Prince of Tennis pfp buff is real 🔥🔥
iykyk :)
Here's a question for you, it's a scenario that happened during one of our doubles games; one player dinked the ball over the net into the kitchen between the opposing pair, both of whom entered the kitchen to return the ball but only one of them made contact the ball and returned it over the net. Is there any type of fault or foul here? Please don't criticize the gameplay, we know that the dominant player should be covering the middle. We can't find a definitive answer, only opinions. Thanks everyone!
Bro.. single needs skills... way tougher training than double.. skipping single for double only is a grave mistake which lots of double specialist pros do but they are losing their skills in double.. but a good single players just takes a few weeks training to be a 6.0+ double player
HI QUONG ❤ Teach me bro I am so bad at singles
Quong you are so wrong lol. Take yourself as a example you’re not even close to being a 6.0 but you are good at singles.
@@scopen867this comment aged poorly 😂
again, i'm asking what "stick" means in "stick the forth"?
Singles is definitely a different game than doubles. I play singles for 1 hour and I’m completely drained but I can play 6 hours of doubles without being tired.
I don't understand what "stick" means.
OMG.. Blaine..
😊
Quick piece of advice man. People are looking to consume content on how to get better at singles not hear anecdotes the whole time. Try to keep these videos streamlined and I’m sure they’ll do better.
Far too much talking. I stopped watching after 3 minutes. Not really interested in your “life story “. Get to the point and give us some points.
I disagree, it was great to hear about the background, backstory, and thought process - and see the story unfold. Perhaps if there was a video outline so that one could get to the main points if so desired, then that could satisfy what you would be looking for?
You should drill with Calvin page again, he’s by far one of the best singles players who’s readily available
Game over. Don’t ever do a tournament again. I’m 32 years old worth 23 million from investing and building industrial buildings. Pickleball is excercise only. Do not let your kids or grandkids remember you as a pickleball player. Stop!
No one asked how much you're worth. Cool story, you sound like a total tool.
