As we speak, I am working on installing 3d printing in the micro hardware stores (ferraterias) in the provinces of Peru. Specifically for plastic pipe fittings.
No more manufacturing and transportation which allows us to beat China on price.
    Are you listening, mission trippers?

The details are presented in a rather optimised manner, but I do agree with the overall thesis. One way to understand just how much impact warehousing has is to consider places like Ikea and Costco - for both of these businesses, a major component in their less-than-average prices is the way the have their warehouse do double-duty as the storefront.
Interestingly, I think this is another area where mass-production 3d printing and hobby 3d printing might be divergent. Certainly I *feel* like my personal hobby building waste has shot up since I got a 3d printer, The waste on an individual part is almost certainly less, but at the same time having the 3d printer has allowed me to tackle projects that were completely out of my reach with the result that I'm doing much more physical building than I did five years ago - and in the process, generating more waste.
Which leads me to my only major worry about mass production 3d printing becoming widespread: historically, a more efficient manufacturing process has almost never resulted in less overall waste. Instead, a less costly way to make stuff almost always results in *more stuff.* If 3d printing cuts waste by 90%, will that mean there is 90% less waste in the world? Or will it just mean 90% more *stuff* ? Straining the limits of my Econ minor now, I suspect that the answer will be linked to the cost:waste ratio. If 3d printing cuts manufacturing costs by 50% and manufacturing waste by 90%, the end result will probably be 50% more stuff and roughly 40% less waste. If 3d printing cuts manufacturing costs by 75% and turns out to only cut waste by 60%, the result will be 75% more stuff and ultimately roughly 15% *more* waste.
Which doesn't mean we should avoid 3d printing as a technology. It just means that if we want to actually survive the climate catastrophe, we need to all start strongly reconsidering how much *stuff* we want in our lives.

Rebound is a thing, though I believe some of your calculations are off. We need high co2 prices asap, then 3d printing and its efficiency will just mean that stuff stays more affordable due to lower co2 emissions than in a scenario where we don't harvest these gains.

@@slant3dPlease do! I can just imagine Destin's face when he realises that the engineering challenges of industrial 3D printing (thinking differently about design) are the tip of a much larger iceberg - what it means for logistics and storage. An argument could be made that embracing 3D printing for industry creates a strategic-level asset.

With your in-house filament production, do you have any plans to integrate minimisation of environmental harm into the process? things like spooling and packaging to minimise single use (non-bio) plastics, spool and filament returns, etc?

Our spools reuse program has already started addressing this.

Great argumentation! The distribution and break-up of those supply chains adds to the cost savings as well and cuts down the time and risks associated with ordering from the other side of the world!
Recently discovered your channel and can't have enough! Waiting to hear from you on the following topics:

I subscribed because of the 3D printing tips, but now the channel turned into self promotion only. I'm unsubscribing.

That's fair. The channel has tips mostly because they help people know how to design for their printers. But, at the end of the day, this is a channel for their business and their business needs.

The channel has always been focused around mass manufacturing. This is (mostly, the science show excess CO2 by and large helps improve quality of life) useful information for that target audience.
Also, it has been clearly stated that they are very busy during the holiday season and these videos clearly take less time to put together. The youtube algorithm heavily punishes a channel for not putting out regular content, even if that content gets a much smaller amount of views.

If talking about the statistics and viability of the industry to promote good in the world is self promotion. Then so be it.

    • @dennisolsson3119
      @dennisolsson3119 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I did not find this as self promoting as other videos.
I like the rhetorical arguments to promote 3d printing myself, so: thank you for the video!
I am located in Sweden and trying to start my own manufacturing, so your videos are super helpful but I will probably not be able to give back for a while. But maybe we will "partner up" some day...
