  • My journey with 2x Anamorphic lenses. It's been quite hard to find the perfect lens. The last year I've bought 3 different Anamorphic lenses to try out what would work best for me. They all had their pros and cons. However, I decided to sell two and keep one. In this video I'll tell you why. Please note though that this video is more about USABILITY of the different lenses and less about SAMPLE FOOTAGE or side by side comparison shots.

    I watched the video 3 times and still couldn't figure out what you kept and sold. Nice footage.

    I have the Kowa 16-H, but I found I don't really like the look and feel of these lowbudget anamorphot solutions. There is something about the image that just can't compare to expensive anamorphic, or even normal spherical lenses with a higher price tag.
    If I had to describe it, I would say they look too sharp overall, while not actually being sharp where it matters (it's like everything is a bit fuzzy and smudged). Also, the images *feel* like you are looking through glass, not like the objects are right in front of you, which is a problem.

      What taking lens did you use? It can very much depend on their quality.

    Hi, nice video and good description of the set up. Could you please highlight the editing part of this video? What app did you use? Is there any free app for Macbook? regards

    very helpful! I've been tryin to find a light weight setup that can be single focused and this is what I was wondering about. My Kowa 16h is a double focus setup, but I want to avoid rails. I got it for cheap b/c it has a lot of scratches. may take a polisher and remove them one day. Have you noticed the SLR Magic rangefinder performing ok wide open?

    thanks for this video it was very helpful. I have a Kowa 16 S and just getting started on this, practicing the focusing and de squeezing the footage properly. I have a kind of silly question: do you have any trouble scratching your anamorphic lens with the clamp screws? do you have any solution any other than covering the area where the clamp is attached with tape to not get any scratches? thanks again!

      Thanks for the kind words! What clamp are you using? I have to say with clamps like the ones from Redstan, that fit perfectly, you hardly damage the lens, but with clamps that are made for a wider range of Anamorphic lenses (like the ones from Vidatlantic) you really have to put 'em on tight and then it tends to damage the lens more. In that case, tape is indeed a good option.

      I use painters tape to prevent damaging the lens. I just replace it as it gets worn out. I'm using a junky clamp.

      @@FilmDat Thnks man, I got exactly one of those from Vid-Atlantic on Ebay, it came with a couple of step up rings but yeah the first try i didnt realize that i was scratching the lens so I have it covered on tape now.
      Keep up the great videos!

    Thanks for the great video. I have a set of rokinons with a 77mm front thread. Will these work with this set up? Is there a way to quickly swap lenses with the adapter on rails? I'm still trying to wrap my head around this but this is promising.

    Thank you for this great video! Could you please suggest whether rear glass element of the anamorphic lens should be placed as close as possible to the taking lens front glass element in order to produce sharp image? I have managed to get Sankor 16d and I cannot get sharp image while using it with Helios 44-3, I wonder if that is due to the unability to stick rear glass element of Sankor into the taking lens close enough or is it something else.

    • @FilmDat
      @FilmDat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, I haven't had problems with that. I always put the anamorphic lens pretty far in the Redstan clamp. There's a few other things you could check though.
      First thing to do is check if the lenses are aligned correctly (for example by shining a light in the lens and checking if you get to see a horizontal line). Next up, try changing the aperture. If it's on F2, of course you'll get that nice bokeh but getting a sharp image can be super hard. Especially without a single focus solution. What about the lens convertor you're using for your Helios to your camera body? Do you get sharp images without the anamorphic lens on there?
      Sorry for not having a simple answer, it's just checking all these elements one by one and seeing if it helps. Trial and error I guess ;)

    Are all those anamorphic lenses short scope? How do you not get vignetting with that and the helios or does the fvd take care of that?

    • @FilmDat
      @FilmDat  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I feel like the Helios (58mm) is as "wide" as you should go. Any wider and you'll definitely see vignetting. Might also depend on the camera setup your using and how long your train (after the lens) will be.

      @@FilmDat I'm going helios, clamp, sankor 16c. And it's pretty heavy vignetting wise

    😂 they look so stupid! You saying the Kowa being 2k is expensive?
    I’m trying to figure this out”creator” lens. It’s $18,000! So you need a taking lens, and a ton of other stuff?
    None of us will have a 2x option until BLAZAR drops the Cato this fall?
    I would have loved to get a lens like the one used from that movie.
