A bit of Kapton tape may have helped secure the paper insulators, under the toroid. The last one looked as if the clear plastic slipped. I am not being critical, I'm just concerned for your safety. You might consider printing another surround and add a cheap/Ebay volt/amp/watt meter = no multimeter needed. And, rubber pads on the feet (bumps on bottom) might be helpful. If that heavy thing got pulled off of the table, your toes might be in peril. Finally, I am sure that you know that you can DIY an isolation transformer from two identical transformers, placed back to back. I DIY'd one from two dead APC 1500 UPSs. I reused one of the cases. Add an incandescent light bulb, in series (AKA "Dim Bulb Limiter,") to limit the current and Bob's your uncle. I r-e-a-l-l-y enjoy your channel. Thanks for all the effort you put forth.

Yeah, I double checked the insulators off camera before final assembly so they are all good.
An isolation transformer is on the list of things to do too, one day... :)
I'm glad you enjoy my videos too. :)

Hello, nice restoration! I am wondering if such a device should have an inrush limiter and/or a MOV to remove huge voltage spikes from switching on/off ?

It might help, but I just turn it down to 0 before switching it on and off to prevent any blown fuses which seems to work well.
I do put protection on larger fixed transformers in my other designs though, a smart thing to do to prevent blown fuses and arcing switches. :)

also did you check your voltage + amperage ratings for your binding posts, or did you just grab some and assumed it does not have a big impact?

I just chose some banana jacks that looked like they were chunky enough. I didn't check their ratings as I mostly will use them to connect to a multimeter for precise voltage measurements.

I'd probably have used shrouded recessed terminal plugs, but I guess as you implied, if you're monkeying around with variacs, it's kind of assumed you know what you're doing...

Yeah, I did think about it but then I lose the ability to connect normal wires for really unsafe experiments. 😅
Maybe I should put a warning sticker on it to make it all safe again... ⚠️ 😁

Good video, would you be willing to release the 3d drawing you did for the button holder??

I've added a thingiverse link for the 3D files and other information. :)

Pretty useless request, since it will only fit one brand and model of Variac LOL
