If you look up leprosy cases way back then when there was no cure, it’s not contagious but over time a person could get it with prolonged continued contact. Depends on the person and their immune system and their contact with untreated person, some can get it some time after or some would take years later after they help take care of the sick people. That’s why without a cure the best way back then was to keep them quarantined/isolated from everyone else.
