My favorite era of Michael's playing. I was a 13-year-old drummer until I bought MSG's "One Night at Budokan" (because of Cozy Powell) and instantly fell in love with Schenker. That tone, his phrasing, that tone, the fluidity of his playing, that tone, etc., etc.. I asked my parents for a guitar that Christmas and they were more than happy to get rid of my drum set. ;-)
I saw UFO with Paul Chapman in the 70's, great band, fantastic gig, then..... I saw UFO with my hero Schenker in Newport Wales about 2005, it was something else, I literally floated out of the concert hall after, the solo on Love to love was mesmerising , trance like, I cant explain it but it was a Zen moment. Schenker is magical.
Michael Schenker is my all time favorite guitarist. If for some reason I woke up and when I picked up my guitar I could only play and sound like somebody else, I pray that it would be Michael Schenker!
Always remember going to the local metal record store in the mid 80’s. Was really just starting to play. Asked the guy at the counter if he had any Malmsteem. He just shook his head and got me some Schenker. Best move ever.
Michael’s playing is a combination of feel and melody, which is lacking in many guitarists today. Especially with shredders. His vibrato is excellent which something most guitarists haven’t mastered. SRV had the same skill set although different styles. Look up the video of Kirk Hammit with Michael. It’s not even close between the two of them. A friend of mine who also plays use to say. Most guitarists can play their fastest and complex lick. Michael, tuning his guitar and bending a few notes would make you feel it in your stomach and turn your head.

You really hit the nail on the head with this lesson. I realized, like, 20 years after first hearing him that Schenker plays with an *authority* , *intensity* and *conviction* that is really difficult to emulate. It has to come from the hands - having the 'right' equipment is not the answer.
Killer! Schenker always had great tone, vibrato and tone. However his note choice was quite different from most blues rock guitarists when he came to light in ufo in the 70s. He introduced a more sophisticated scale choice rather than just straight pentatonics. He’s still killer now. 👍🤘. Thanks.

Michael is a master of bending a note to pitch before picking it, without hearing it, then doing a downward vibrato. This is a huge part of his style and "feel". The very first lead guitar note that he played on Phenomenon, in "Too Young To Know", was performed this way, then over and over throughout that break, and the entire song, to a lesser degree on the entire album, and his style, his entire career. It's like he showed us right at the very start " Here is what I'm gonna be about, totally." David, the very first B note bent up to C should have been silently pre-bent to C, then a downward vibrato initiated. That's what Schenker demonstrated in the first note of the video clip, and it is very important to grasp this to sound like Mike. It's all over his playing. If anyone wants to sound like Schenker, get "Too Young To Know" sounding proper, then jump off from there.

Dude you nailed in on Schenkers feel. To me that's what makes him my favorite guitarist of all time. Personally I don't believe there is another guitarist that digs in like him. Im a huge fan of all your lessons, but the Schenker ones are great for all guitarists to follow and learn

Listening to his Hellfest concert,I noticed there was very slow and deep chorus and some phase on his distortion which is almost like the early Big Muff from Electro-harmonix. Back in the 70's I was able to mimmic his tone with a Peavy Mark IV with built in chorus and that one pedal thru a 2X15 cabinet. Of course his feel has been awesome since his first LP with UFO (at 17 yrs.old).His solo on "Only You Can Rock Me" is a MUST learn... No Heavy Petting and Obsession are just AMAZING!.
I love his 80's style in particular ..... When i first heard 'Lights Out' from Strangers In The Night (1979) ( and Love To Love / Rock Bottom etc ) I was a Fan for life ..... I just love his Melodic solos, with a touch of 'Classical' runs .... My Fav Guitarist, .... stolen LOADS of 'Licks' over the years !
Now I’m babbling a bit, but the obsession album from UFO is really a masterwork in lead guitar playing. And of course the strangers in the night album. Assault Attack is also in that category for me. Just brilliant!
Just watched MSG at a festival in Europe on TH-cam. He and the band were excellent. He was playing like he did during the mid 70s to late 80s when he was the best.
It wasn’t until video on the internet that I realized Michael Schenker played almost exclusively with three fingers and rarely used his pinky. Some of the melodic lines he ripped though were done without the pinky.
Good stuff as usual! Feel is certainly overlooked as the most important aspect of an artists signature sound. Early YJM had tons of feel as did most 70-80’s guitarists..
I love early Yngwie! Watching a bootleg LIVE video of him in Japan, playing with Alcatrazz, sealed the deal for me to expand from just playing drums to playing guitar, too!
Back in the day when I started playing guitar.I heard of him when he was playing with UFO.I remember "Lights out " Rock Bottom" Doctor Doctor" my favorite "Hiway Lady". .Those songs had all feeling n Vibrato .But when he went SOLO ." Desert Song " " Into the Arena" Assault Attack" .The essence of his choice of notes & feel .Makes him so unique . Your right about the idea moving the notes around or lick in different keys! Noted well below in the comment by MT, but Michael is one player that "added" and did not "distract" from the songs. It's funny that UFO is considered my most who must label music as "Heavy Metal," when they really were a rock band that had some great "pop" songs. Michael really knew when to play and when to refrain from playing. Too many players vomit cascading notes that mean nothing and have no feel or melody.

I’ve been fortunate to be able to see Michael perform on several occasions over the years. His playing is wonderfully melodic and filled with fire. I recommend guitarists go all the way back to the SCORPIONS first album, LONESOME CROW, to hear the budding 16yo genius.

I kinda lost track of him when he left the band. I saw him play live, opening for Rush in the 1980s, I just thought I wished he was still with UFO.

Too many speed players today with no feel. Schenker could play fast too, but the melodic solos he played were a song within the song. Nice tone by the way too. What kind of amp do you use? Thanks. Great lesson.
I heard some schenker as a kid (79-80), but completely lost touch with his work, until I caught one of your vids. Since then, I've gone back and listened to most of his stuff. He's a monster. Very comparable to Rhoads during the same time, but sounds way less "composed". Noodley improv like EVH, but melodic like Rhoads. Another great lesson, and thanks for getting me to check out his work!

I think what is going on is and I do it too and that is you vibrato almost every note. You dint just pick it, you inject energy into the note even if its the slightest amount of vibrato. Vibrato is the very first thing I taught myself on guitar so it comes naturally. But I think that is what is going on. Very much like a violinist vibratoing every note. Its a European thing.
Controversial question; can feel be taught? No disrespect to you or your channel. There are people playing for a year with feel. Others playing 30 years no feel.
I actually preferred all the other guitarist in UFO after Michael Schenker left the group. I know most people think I'm crazy but I think Rudolf Schenker is a better riff writer and has better melodic line solos which is like gilmourish. I agree with Rudolf to kick out Michael Schenker to chase down Uli Roth and beg him on his knees in the early 70s to join the scorpions because Uli Roth has a very unique way of playing scale patterns and arpeggios. I rather have learn the intro lead to Scorpions No One like you because even Ritchie Blackmore asked Matthias Jabs how did you overdub those double lead lines because its a special trick he did which most people have overlooked about the doubling effect used and harmonizer effect. Just the Intro section was a small minor masterclass of its own to learn from which I doubt Michael Schenker could have done.

Myself a 2 friends were camping for four days w/o radio signal of any sort and only one sole cassette to play the entire time. That was UFO Lights Out. Never tired of it. Still haven't.

You can see and hear where Michael was influenced by his own admission by the mountain man, Mr. Leslie West. He loved Theme For an Imaginary Western.

I think i can remember reading about him sticking a stack of quarters in his Wah pedal to keep it in its 'sweet spot' .

My favorite Schenker era is with Robin McAuley. Songs like Nightmare, Destiny etc. Please do an episode on this era
It rarely gets mentioned, but Schenker rarely uses his pinky. Mostly 3 fingers.

Now I’m babbling a bit, but the obsession album from UFO is really a masterwork in lead guitar playing. And of course the strangers in the night album. Assault Attack is also in that category for me. Just brilliant!
What always gets me is he is mostly a three finger player, it looks unnatural to me, but does it ever work!
That song Lost Horizons has some killer solos especially the outro solo he really cuts loose on that one. I am going to have to listen to it again thanks David.

Myself a 2 friends were camping for four days w/o radio signal of any sort and only one sole cassette to play the entire time. That was UFO Lights Out. Never tired of it. Still haven't.

What's up David? Everytime I think of Mr. Schenker, the Let it Roll solo starting from where the song slows down is so melodic. He's just making the guitar sing. Check out Shirin Siavashi on YT doing this song. I love your lessons. They always get my musical gear going. Thanks 👍

My all-time favorite guitar player! Loved him from the very start back in the 70s. I was 16 years old and 76 and was playing guitar and was around a lot of bands that were playing out. It’s amazing the amount of guitar players back in those days that were influenced by him. you’re doing a great service to bringing out what is great about him. That’s why so many great players from the 80s in on site him as a major influence. It’s always been his feel and his choice of phrasing. Love it!
