who elects the fatf and why do they hold such emense power but they are not elected and nobody seems to know about there existence yet they actually hold a lot of power. thank you for your work

Hi Tory, Thank you for your insightful question. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an intergovernmental body established in 1989 by the ministers of its member jurisdictions. It's not an elected body in the traditional sense like a political election. Instead, it's comprised of representatives from various governments, particularly from the member countries.
FATF's primary objective is to set standards and promote the effective implementation of legal, regulatory, and operational measures for combating money laundering, terrorist financing, and other related threats to the integrity of the international financial system.
The reason FATF holds significant power is due to the collective agreement and commitment of its member countries, which are some of the world's largest economies, to adhere to its recommendations. When countries don't comply with FATF standards, they face potential countermeasures or can be publicly listed, which can affect their global economic relations.
While it might seem like FATF operates behind the scenes, it is instrumental in shaping international financial regulations and standards, and its actions have a widespread impact on global finance and banking sectors.
I hope this clarifies the nature and role of FATF. Thank you for engaging with the content and for your appreciation!
      Marco

    Hi ...Hello
Thanks for the details on FATF. This is helpful. Can i ask if any memory technique can be made to remember 40 +9 recommendations.? That would be more helpful for the interviews.

Hi, I’m glad the video is helpful to you. In my opinion if you are required to actually memorise all FATF recommendations I would use the natural order provided by the official FATF list.
In the latest revision, FAFT categorised all 40 recommendations into 7 groups (A to G), I think that if you start by learning what kind of risk is being mitigated by each group you could more easily make a mental association with the actual recommendations that are contained into each group.
One last thing that I want to point out is that you say 40+9 which now are no longer in use. The latest revised FATF list has only 40 recommendations as it was updated to include also the old 9 special recommendations on terrorist financing so, a bit of a good news here for you as you have 9 less to memorise 🙂. You can find the link directing you to the very latest version of FATF recommendations in the video description. Thanks for watching 👍🏻

Hi Lee Mao, thanks for commenting on the video. FATF as an organisation was established indeed in 1989. However, their first 40 recommendations were issued in 1990. “In April 1990, less than a year after its creation, the FATF issued a report containing a set of Forty Recommendations.”
