I adopted my chinchilla from a shelter. We believe that she was just under a year old. Allowing me to pet her literally took a year and a half. I agree that the chew toys, hay, hanging toys, hay mats, wooden houses can be expensive due to the amazing frequency that everything gets chewed up. That along with the fact that chinchillas are quite intelligent and need an ever-revolving set of toys so as not to get bored. Yes they are a prey animal through and through. She licks my finger when I pet her, but place her on the floor and it is immediately..."who are you?". They are usually sweet animals, but the prey behavior is strong in these creatures so humans should not expect to be able to cuddle them constantly.
yes!! I totally agree with this! I'm sorry to hear that it took so long for your chinchilla to allow you to pet her. But hey, at least now you are bonded with her!!

?!?!? I don't see the sand being relevant unless you bathe your chinchilla in it. You're supposed to bathe your chinchilla in volcanic ash, in case you didn't know. Also, they should be eating pellets and timothy hay, I'd recommend Oxbow. Fruits, nuts, and veggies are extremely unfit for their diet, as the high sugar content can cause bloating. Seeing as you might be fairly new at owning a chinchilla, you want to avoid any plastic, anything not strictly a-ok for them, small wires they can get limbs stuck in, and brands like Kaytee and Carefresh. In terms of treats, I give my chinchillas oats occasionally (up to about 2 oats/day) and a dried rose hip at most once daily (high vitamin c content, is good for them, but can cause weight and bloating if offered too often.) Pandora is being so cute. I was literally just playing with my chinchilla in my room.also my chinchilla now realized that she can go in my dresser and now she goes and poops in my dresser. But she is to cute to be mad at her
my family has a tradition where we have to take on a new responsibility when we turn 16. The responsibility being our own small pet. My brother got a snake but I was thinking of getting a chinchilla. I've been doing a lot of research and i think its the pet i want! I love furry animals and i;m very patient.
You also need to think about where you’re going to be in life. Chinchillas live 20 years, and a lot of dorms and landlords don’t allow pets (though probably won’t blink an eye at a hamster or goldfish).
My chinchillas are called Billie and Stuart. They ate my cactus und sometimes Stuart randomly screams in the middle of the night so Imma get a heartattack
@@Chinchillakingdom they scream, when there is smth off or they feel threatened (p.e. from the cat sounds of our neighbors or a cheeky big bird on the balcony). And yes, sometimes they have nightmares, too. Then ours are screaming and waiting until we come to pet them 😭❤️

"chinchillas are not like dogs, they don't just listen to you when you tell them to do something" I could tell my dogs to sit and only one of them listens. I tell my chinchilla to sit and they listen lol. Has anyone else trained their chin? Its really hard tho
Finally, someone who speaks the truth. I have chinchillas and this is exactly right lol bang on with your explaining, and it is nice to know that mine are the same :) ♥️♥️ really good video. Pandora is so cute!
As a kid we had 500 of these guys and my brother and I earned money feeding, watering, giving them dust baths and changing their papers...I actually kind of miss the times when it was just me, the chinchillas and a radio just making sure they had the stuff they needed to be happy and comfortable. If one got out we had a little dog that would corner them for us to grab because they tended to get into spaces we couldn't easily get to. So, instead of them bolting as you crawled under something they would be focused on the dog who was more curious of them than anything.
My two chinchillas are rescues and they don’t like affection whatsoever. They will only let me stroke them but not under the chin or nose or anything. Their ears seem very ticklish aswell but all the ones I’ve seen online don’t even react when their owners touch their ears

With them being smart. I remember I had one of those dog enclosed things so I could bring my chinchilla outside onto my back yard and she was calculating where she could escape and she managed to squeeze under the enclosed fence. Luckily it was easy to catch her and bring her back inside.
I learned the noise one the hard way, the first night I had him his wheel woke me up because it was so loud but eventually adapted to the noise and I sleep just fine and unfortunately became a heavy sleeper 😂
Good video, there were some things I did not know, even though I studied animal psycholgy and keeping. Because there are just so many pets, especially rodents, chinchillas didn't get too much info. I used to keep gerbils and degus and miss having a pet at home, while my cat lives with my mom (cause its a lot nicer for her there ,as i dont have a balcony and mostly tilted roof windows, with no windowsill to sit on and I didnt want her to go through such a big, stressfull change, especially at her higher age) Chinchillas were pets I had considered for long, they are relatives to degus but there are some differences. One thing to consider though is that chinchillas should not be kept alone either. Like the majority of rodents except hamsters. Since in europe almost no one has air conditionioning and this roof apartment gets very hot, i wouldnt be able to keep the temperature down. Another reason why I havent gotten another pet yet, is that im quite sick often not feeling well, so I don't feel able to provide most pets with enough care and attention, as much as i would like to.
My chinchilla chili is rlly affectionate and well behaved his original owner must of always played with him, chili greets me every morning comes up to the cage and just asks to be pet it’s so cute and he’ll chill on my chest one next to me on my bed and I clean his cage a lot I don’t mind I love the little dude I’d die for him and my room is always cool for him always the the best temp for him

Hi, I literally just got a chinchilla over a week and half ago from my friend. She’s living in a good environment right now and I’m still ordering her new things to play with. I’ve done a lot of research about a chinchilla, and my chinchillas cage is right next to where I sleep. I was wondering if chinchillas could get fleas or any other types of bugs on them, if so could you please give some tops to help prevent them. My parents would not let me keep her if she ends up getting fleas because I also have other animals in my room and do not want them to get fleas either. Thank you for the tips, I’m new to your channel and your channel is pretty useful to me! Thank you for taking proper care of your chinchilla as well, it looks so happy and comfortable where it’s at! God bless you!
Hello, I'm so happy for you! From my experience, it is rare that chinchilla will get flees simply because their fur is too dense, so the flees will suffocate 😂 One thing you do need to watch out for is ringworm. (it's not a worm, it's a fungus). If the environment that are in is not clean, the risk of getting ringworm is higher. But I'm sure you are going to take great care of her, so it shouldn’t be a problem! Oh and welcome to the channel! ❤️
@@carolinedrake7383 chinchillas are one of the cleanest animals I've ever encountered. They don't cause a lot of allergies, they don't get bugs/mites (not saying they can't, but its rare), and they clean themselves very well. But they do poop....ALOT! Lol best of luck with your new friend!
I loved my chinchilla, but he got out once, and REFUSED to go back into his cage. So I tied a string to the door, and sat across the room. OMG! He kept jumping off, and on the door like he KNEW what would happen 💀 Eventually he went in, I yanked the string, and he went CRAZY inside trying to get out 🤣 🤣 🤣
As a former chin owner, I agree with all the above! lol I had 2 and the boy destroyed my 64 controller cable, ran his wheel and barked most of the night, chased the cats and assaulted them, chewed a hole in the wall, grabbed curtains and pulled them in to his cage and chewed them up, pooped every where etc. Still one of the best little pets ever.
Hey I’m curious why you use fleece, I used fleece for 6 years for my rats but changed when I read into how bad it is for ammonia control, since changing to kiln dried pine they’re much happier and love digging, whilst I don’t know whether chinchillas would like to dig I do know fleece isn’t good for ammonia control (from my own experience)
hmm that's interesting. Thank you for bring this up! I believe a lot of chinchilla owners use fleece because it is very clean and easy to manage (especially with the pee). The kiln dried pine would work as well, but will cost more in the long run. I think it's really up to personal choice. 😊
@@Chinchillakingdom oooo okay interesting! I’d guess they don’t chew as much as rats, they look very polite 🥺 my rats used to obliterate the fleece😅 I love chinchillas but unfortunately I’m allergic to hay and straw so couldn’t have them!
The cost of chinnnies goes up as they get older. Their tummies get more sensitive as they age and vets are expensive. We only have one pet bc we want to afford the best care. I get nervous when people get chinnies but they wouldn’t be able to afford a vet visit in case of an emergency.
My chinchilla Garou almost never lets me pet him and only comes to me when I have sweets in hand, besides, he is the one that bites my things the most😫😫
Ok so i guess my chin is kinda like Pandora my chin one time i left her little door of her cage open and she bit the cage door and slid it open and got out at the middle of the night and i woke up too her on my head mean while i was sleeping i couldn't get her back in her cage that i had to get my older brother and thats my story of the great chinchilla escape
In Asia they are called Totoro. Expectation: Cute and fluffy. Reality: They can grow plants, grow up to 7 feet tall and call on flying cat bus at nighttime.
Hi! I have a question. My chinchilla sleeps during daytime and loves playing during night time so I keep a night light next to him to keep him active and not sleepy but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Do you have any recommendations for that kind of thing?
What an adorable chinchilla ! Just might have to be careful about the wheel, it's actually not good for their back, since it doesn't suit the natural shape of their spine (so it can even become dangerous over time). Mine never had this but will usually run in a chin-proof room for 1 to 2h a day ^^
Like with hamsters, I assume the wheel is only harmful if it is too small, which is what causes the back to bend downwards while running, causing back problems from long term exposure. My own hamster will not run in a noisy wheel, and considering how extremely well all rodents hear and need to be alert, I'd say the wheel in the video is "harmful" in the sense that it must be very stressing for the chinchilla to run in such a noisy wheel. My previous hamster also despised when a wheel was noisy. Not having a wheel at all is also harmful, at least for hamsters as they run up to 9km every night and will thus be in need of exercise if they do not have a wheel. I don't know about chinchillas, but considering they are prey animals, I assume they also spend a lot of time running in nature, and would need a proper substitute for that in captivity. Hamsters are usually never comfortable with free roaming for more than 20 minutes at a time, and chinchillas seem to have the same need to feel safe. Thus I doubt that chinchillas like to be out for 1-2 hours straight every day, unless of course it's divided into 10-20 min intervals.
I feel like they are guinea pig+cat+annoyed detective who thought that they finally find a hole to get under the damn sofa but it disappear the next day.
I have never been around a chinchilla before, but if there is one thing I'd like to do before I die of old age in about 80 years time, it's to touch a chinchilla. I cannot possibly pass peacefully before I know just how soft they are.
Very good info. I would recommend your video. You need an exotic vet in NJ, maybe elsewhere too. All animals are very smart. I miss my chinchillas and degus. - RIP
We had a chi chi who wouldn't stop yipping and hated us. He would run away any chance he could get. They're not all like that but I assume like cats, males are more standoffish.
Chinchillas are so much like guinea pigs; they even make the same noices haha. (Of course not the same, but very similar: poop a lot, chew a lot, like to hide and not be held for too long)
Would it be weird or smart to keep them in the basement and change their day night schedule to fit when I'd like to play with them? It is the coolest part of the house. By change their schedule I mean make the lights come on with a timer at different times.
Me and my boyfriend say that chinchillas are ADHD the animal, always moving easily bored. I'm autistic and ADD and my little Picchu is the perfect pet for me.
I got my chinchilla from my Ag teacher at the end of my school year as a graduation gift because she was getting a new one and simply didn't have the room for him he was her own personal pet so it was ok
It makes me so jellly when people have cuddly chinchillas.. My Apollo hates everything including his first owner (my bf) but I've been slowly working with him to get him to love me, so far so good lmao
Haii Haii. i want to buy a chinchilla. :D they say you have to buy 2 of them because they are group animals. i think 2 is a bit to much for me tbh. do you think it's posible to just buy one? and do you think you can fool them if you give them a stuffed animal?
Do you mean places you can get a chinchilla? There are many shelters that have chinchilla's as well as chinchilla breeder's. Depending on where you live, there may some breeders around you. If you live in America, here is a link to trustworthy breeders: www.empresschinchilla.org/ecbc-breeder-directory Hope it helped!
Ooohh... Miss my TOV Violet boy. Had him for 10 years and then he died from pneumonia. Edit : Pandora chewing curtains and random things reminds of mine. So true. And mine would obsess over this random newfound chewing toy. He would kick up a fuss if I separate it from him. And he hates to be handled. He's only super good mood like 10% of the time where he would be photogenic and pose and hold namecards and don't move. But 90% of the time if I let him out he's exploring in a flash and I have to let him be for a while because I can't catch him until he calms down or gets bored.
I have rats ... what is the best pet ? My rats are getting old and would like to have a change of pet possibly .... Thumbs up for rats and thumbs down for chincilla ... im ready for anything but I just wanna know what others think ^-^ Thank you!

Pandora is being so cute. I was literally just playing with my chinchilla in my room.also my chinchilla now realized that she can go in my dresser and now she goes and poops in my dresser. But she is to cute to be mad at her
Aww how can we every be mad at them 🥺🥰
It's alrgiht ! They can't control poop but they can with pee :)
@@tragile9108 Yes, totally! :))
I’m so glad that pandora is having a good life with you!!
She is very loved :)))
my family has a tradition where we have to take on a new responsibility when we turn 16.
Chinchillas are social animals so you need at least 2 chinchillas.
My chinchillas are called Billie and Stuart. They ate my cactus und sometimes Stuart randomly screams in the middle of the night so Imma get a heartattack
oh wow! I've heard sometimes they scream when they get nightmares, but not entirely sure 😅

Only one I was surprised by was #7 as I fully expected them to be nocturnal like my hamsters.
Pandora is adorable!
pretty adorable indeed 😊💕
"chinchillas are not like dogs, they don't just listen to you when you tell them to do something" I could tell my dogs to sit and only one of them listens. I tell my chinchilla to sit and they listen lol. Has anyone else trained their chin? Its really hard tho

Finally, someone who speaks the truth. I have chinchillas and this is exactly right lol bang on with your explaining, and it is nice to know that mine are the same :) ♥️♥️ really good video. Pandora is so cute!
A good word to describe chinchilla intelligence is "persistent." They are *incredibly* persistent (even stubborn) haha :)
Very true on the escape cage bc on first day or like week they uh chewed on the bars and when the cage was open they try to hop out
As a kid we had 500 of these guys and my brother and I earned money feeding, watering, giving them dust baths and changing their papers...I actually kind of miss the times when it was just me, the chinchillas and a radio just making sure they had the stuff they needed to be happy and comfortable.
OH. MY. GOD. I JUST CLICKED ON A VIDEO AND NOW YOU ARE ONE OF MY FAV TH-camRS I WANNA KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU AND YOUR ADORABLE CHINCHILLA. (I have 4 right now and two others are already sold)

With them being smart. I remember I had one of those dog enclosed things so I could bring my chinchilla outside onto my back yard and she was calculating where she could escape and she managed to squeeze under the enclosed fence. Luckily it was easy to catch her and bring her back inside.
I have a really good hack I use, I use the extension hand held part of a vacuum and just vacuum the cage! It’s so fast and easy
I learned the noise one the hard way, the first night I had him his wheel woke me up because it was so loud but eventually adapted to the noise and I sleep just fine and unfortunately became a heavy sleeper 😂
My chinchilla litteraly destroied everything good I own but i can't got upset of her because she's to cute
My chinchilla chili is rlly affectionate and well behaved his original owner must of always played with him, chili greets me every morning comes up to the cage and just asks to be pet it’s so cute and he’ll chill on my chest one next to me on my bed and I clean his cage a lot I don’t mind I love the little dude I’d die for him and my room is always cool for him always the the best temp for him
I have PTSD and I was recommended to get a pet. Chinchillas are beautiful.
Don't get a chinchilla,i've had one, they are not good or friendly pets. They are wild animals. Brother, you should pray instead.
I got a snake, he helps with anxiety and grounds me
I used to have PTSD and my dog and chins helped me a lot but might be because I adore animals so being near them makes me feel better anyway!
@@Albert-oe3yg What was your experience with chinchillas like?
@@shirin8609 I must say,not very good, they are very loud at night, leace a loot of poop and when you leave them to wander in the house/apartament they also leave poop every 5 seconds. But,if you have the time and a house,i do think that you could buy one
My chinchilla learned that when she started chirping at 2AM it was a surefire way to get my attention. So that became my life.
My chinchilla changed my life. I love her dearly.
Mine just screams in the middle of the night if I forgot to give him his treat
This just makes me appreciate my cat even more😆
Hi, I literally just got a chinchilla over a week and half ago from my friend.
From my experience, it is rare that chinchilla will get flees simply because their fur is too dense, so the flees will suffocate 😂
One thing you do need to watch out for is ringworm. (it's not a worm, it's a fungus). If the environment that are in is not clean, the risk of getting ringworm is higher. But I'm sure you are going to take great care of her, so it shouldn’t be a problem! Oh and welcome to the channel! ❤️
@@Chinchillakingdom Thank you so much! I clean her cage around 2-3 times a day so she lives in a pretty clean cage!
@@carolinedrake7383 Wow! Squeaky clean!! 🧼
OMG! He kept jumping off, and on the door like he KNEW what would happen 💀 Eventually he went in, I yanked the string, and he went CRAZY inside trying to get out 🤣 🤣 🤣
Thanks for this! Thinking about getting one to keep me company 🥰
ooo yay! I'm very excited for you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Still one of the best little pets ever.
ty for posting!! I'd rather not get a chinchilla now. sad, but the good is i'm informed more on this animal, and know i wouldn't be able to have one .
yes, chinchillas are definitely not for everyone! But good job for getting informed and doing research!
This is good info because I'm probably going to get a chinchilla on Christmas
Pandora is so chill! 😍 my chinchillas wouldn't let me stroke them or handle them like that.
The cost of chinnnies goes up as they get older. Their tummies get more sensitive as they age and vets are expensive. We only have one pet bc we want to afford the best care. I get nervous when people get chinnies but they wouldn’t be able to afford a vet visit in case of an emergency.
yes, one should never get a chinchilla without considering the prior costs! Thank you for this comment!
fek it if family member in danger worry about saving first, paying comes later
My chinchilla Garou almost never lets me pet him and only comes to me when I have sweets in hand, besides, he is the one that bites my things the most😫😫
Bite his things to assert dominance
Ok so i guess my chin is kinda like Pandora my chin one time i left her little door of her cage open and she bit the cage door and slid it open and got out at the middle of the night and i woke up too her on my head mean while i was sleeping i couldn't get her back in her cage that i had to get my older brother and thats my story of the great chinchilla escape
haha yeah they can find all sorts of creative ways to escape 😂
I gotta say these are so accurate my mom has 6 chinchillas
In Asia they are called Totoro. Expectation: Cute and fluffy.
Reality: They can grow plants, grow up to 7 feet tall and call on flying cat bus at nighttime.
Where and how should I get a chinchilla. I’ve done on the research on caring for it but now I just need to know where to get it from
So adorable! Not a pet for me, though. Thank you for the video.
Hi! I have a question. My chinchilla sleeps during daytime and loves playing during night time so I keep a night light next to him to keep him active and not sleepy but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Do you have any recommendations for that kind of thing?
Same 🧐
Very informative video! I’m trying to decide if I want to get a chinchilla!
Glad to hear that! If you do end up getting one, I'm very excited for yoU! XD
One thing to add for thr messiness is the dust baths: dust is everywhere. I have to dust near my chinny's cage area almost everyday
I have never been around a chinchilla before, but if there is one thing I'd like to do before I die of old age in about 80 years time, it's to touch a chinchilla. I cannot possibly pass peacefully before I know just how soft they are.
They are so soft
When my mom bought a chinchilla I was scard but if u have a long time with your chinchilla he will love u
Very good info. I would recommend your video.
You need an exotic vet in NJ, maybe elsewhere too.
All animals are very smart.
I miss my chinchillas and degus. - RIP
i got my first chinchilla today, he didn't eat to much and only drank some water, he sleept for 4-5 hours, i'm kinda scared
please help...
We had a chi chi who wouldn't stop yipping and hated us. He would run away any chance he could get. They're not all like that but I assume like cats, males are more standoffish.
yes, I totally agree with that, every chinchilla acts differently!
Getting good pictures of my chin are so much harder than photos of my dogs lol
This was very helpful idk if I get a chinchilla 😅but this does help a bit so thank you.🌺
Chinchillas are so much like guinea pigs; they even make the same noices haha.
Is room temperature ok? As we don't really have a temperature thing
Also guinea pigs poop a lot too so yeah dont try getting one if you don't like cleaning poop three times a day
yup, rodents tend to poop a lot haha
Me and my boyfriend say that chinchillas are ADHD the animal, always moving easily bored. I'm autistic and ADD and my little Picchu is the perfect pet for me.

Do you buy them online and go to that place to rehome them and if so do you have any trustworthy websites?
Do you mean places you can get a chinchilla? There are many shelters that have chinchilla's as well as chinchilla breeder's. Depending on where you live, there may some breeders around you. If you live in America, here is a link to trustworthy breeders: www.empresschinchilla.org/ecbc-breeder-directory
Hope it helped!
Where’s the best place to get them?
