@@GrayHuska that’s almost 700k usd I’d say that’s normal price range for them. Newer technology, newer ways to squeeze more money out of the rich who think they’re getting more for the money.
I've always seen Rolls Royce as top end of luxury cars ever since I was a kid. Bentley was more obscure, kind of like Maserati. You knew it was some sort of luxury brand, but EVERYONE(Your neighbor, grandma, the janitor, etc) knows what a Rolls Royce is and where they are in the market.
@@panzer_TZsimply put: Rolls Royce is the BMW-owned Mercedes of the luxury segment while Bentley gives a sporty yet luxurious vibe, just like BMW but are 10x better. Maybe that comparison is why they depreciate. 🤣
No, that is completely wrong. I'm English, late 60's. Before the split Rolls Royce's were the cars of TV entertainers, criminals and other forms of new money, The Beatles had them (I rest my case). They never had any class. Bentleys always had class. Bentley had the history, racing pedigree etc and were more subdued in the styling. They had class. Now VW is chasing volume and BMW is conning people into paying way over the odds for 7 Series'. Still no class. Look at them. Ugh!!
Do they realize they're comparing cars with vastly different production numbers? In 2012, only 790 Rolls-Royce Phantoms were made, while Bentley produced 1,765 Flying Spurs that same year.
Rolls Royce is more iconic, their original design language (front grill and hood ornament) goes back to 1906, if not earlier. It is more common in tv, movies and pop culture (mustard commercials included), more common with royalty / heads of state / dictators. When you describe anything as ‘the Rolls Royce of’ it pretty much means the best, even if you hate the brand that meaning is commonly understood. I also wonder if Rolls is treated more as a special occasion car that owners tend to keep longer, but I have no stats on that (maybe significantly more Bentleys are leased?)
1:34 yeah but new they costed like 500k or more so its massive in depreciation this is 16% left from original Value of the car. + i dont remember anybody saying RR is unreliable. but we always hearing it about VAG and bentley . prices etc through the roof
When the original Continental came out there was nothing like it. The interior was sensational and so much better than anything from Mercedes or BMW. My father in law had one and I wasn’t a fan until I drove it and spent a lot of time in it. The luxury was on a different level plus it had proper performance that actually made it faster or as fast as pretty much anything else from high end brands. It was also widely more expensive and that made it feel so exclusive. It lasted for more than 10 years and was the market leader for the majority of the time. The second generation hasn’t captured the same place in the market and has better competitors plus it isn’t as well built now with VW cutting corners in their processes.
agree to disagree my friend the new 2025 Continental GT is everything you just described and then some. There is simply nothing like it... no competition whatsoever.
Supply and demand; I had a 20 year old luxury car that no-one wanted 10 years ago; now, after an extra 10 years of aging and use, this car is now worth 10 grand because most have been scrapped and there is nostalgia for this car that didn't exist 10 years ago; it's irrational but that's human nature for you..
You should be thankful it actually sold lol. Bentley makes a gorgeous interior but the flying spur exterior is painful to look at. IMHO bentley has not hit a home run on their exterior design since the 90's but they completely lost the plot in 2019. Paradoxically, as a complete package I do find the new 2025 continental GT Mulliner very enticing even though I'm not the biggest fan of the headlight or taillight design.
I'm making a sweeping prediction right now that if the 2025 Continental GT (speed/first edtn/mulliner) doesn't suffer from significant reliability issues, it will depreciate less than the equivalent rolls royce competing product over the next 5 years. In case you're wondering... yes I'm willing to bet money on this.
The odd part is Ghosts when new one year leftover pre Covid were around 18% off I remember seeing advertised before negotiations. So wait a year for a discount back then get a decent discount then the thing keeps value long term is quite interesting. The thing I'd like to know is similar mileage and age what do the bills look like for maintenance? Is the Bentley more or less expensive to maintain over time?
@blaketindle4703 I only have limited experience with a 13 GT Speed for a few years then a 16 GTC V8S. At the time the GT Speed luckily no engine work. The head unit did die on the GT V8S though which was pricy.
Bentley's are cheaper at purchase. ownership is another story. Same story with Rolls, $80k-90k however, the cost of ownership could buy you a Bentley. Doug is forgetting the cost of ownership.
Bentley in the 80s before the split with Rolls Royce BMW/VW was the goto brand for sports luxury sedan cars. Bentleys had a tachometer and a supercharger with torque and HP and a sportier suspension as opposed to Rolls Royces. Although uglier wheel alloys for the Bentleys. Now it's different. 10 year old Bentleys can be had for low $ anywhere because they look very different to modern Bentleys. Rolls Royces look all alike, old or new. Just my 2 cents worth.
Bentley: Just like BMW, they offer sportiness and luxury but is 10x better than BMW. Rolls Royce: the BMW-owned Mercedes of the luxury segment in terms of branding, appeal and exclusivity. Rolls is superior to Bentley and laughs in the face of a S class/ GLS playing dress up(Maybach).
Not a hot take lets compare wraith and continental gt. Wraith is ugly AF and so is the cullinan. Meanwhile continental gt is a beautiful beautiful car.
I wish people would stop referring to Bentley and Rolls as; British. They're not! Furthermore, I wish you would call them what they are. This is VW vs. BMW!
I like watching Doug’s reviews (even though he has the signature annoying voice, it’s part of the charm there) However here when he is with friends that same style just comes across as annoyingly domineering. Literally can’t watch them start to finish. Doug let your friends get in a word, would ya? 😂
BMW and VW had a bidding war for Rolls-Royce/Bentley in the late '90s. VW won and way overpaid, especially after discovering the Rolls-Royce aerospace company, not the car company, owned the rights to the Rolls-Royce name, and the factory was so antiquated it was pretty much worthless. BMW then bought the rights to the name from the Rolls-Royce aerospace company.
It’s the status. Only a Rolls is guaranteed to be parked in front of the hotel, regardless the year
Bentley Brooklands - Hold my beer.😂
Looks cool - the coorect answer. Aesthetic is everything at that level.
In Canada, a Phantom is now around $1,000,000 … 10 Years ago this was a $400,000 car 😂
So 2014/15 Phantoms appreciated to $1M Canadian or usd?
@ I’m saying new. In 2015 they were around 400-500k with options - Now a phantom of Cullinan Black Badge are 1M.

That's more to do with your worthless fiat currency than RR.
Rolls Royce doesn’t tweak their bodies as often as Bentley does. It doesn’t take long for a Continental to look ancient
Dude what?! Contis never changed in 15years!!!!😂😂😂😂
It has always been the case that Rolls Royce has more brand equity.

A Cullinan is a one of one bespoke car. A Bentayga is one of 16 outfits for a VW SUV. Generally the same can be applied for all RR / Bentley models.
“CULLIES ARE HOLDIN THEY VALUE LIKE CRAY”
Was my take away from this discussion
GT Continental added to the bucket list, after any Corvette too

Regards the Rolls Royce, its not so much the value, but what the car brand represents. This includes prestige, priviledge, exclusivity and class.
THE ghost, THE phantom
Doug, why do you hate ‘the’?!
Depreciation on Bentley is insane. Owned a 2024 Flying Spur Edition 12 bought for 340k sold 6 months later for 260k @4000 miles.

It’s about production numbers
Bentley have too much dilution from being associated with VW, as well as being known to be too unreliable.

Any Bentley with a W12 engine is more expensive to maintain and repair than a Rolls. Almost every repair is an engine-out job on those things!
@blaketindle4703 I only have limited experience with a 13 GT Speed for a few years then a 16 GTC V8S. At the time the GT Speed luckily no engine work. The head unit did die on the GT V8S though which was pricy.
Based on it looks alone, I prefer the Bentley design.
Bentley Mulsanne prices are crazy low…looks better than even latest Phantom imho
I know Bentley still depreciates way more than Rolls Royce, but damn they still lose 80% off their value.

Didn't the sultan of Brunei owned a bunch of Bentleys? This explains a lot.
Pick up a '20 flying spur for $100K next year and never look back.

have two banners maybe ?. One with a beard and one without. Beards looking good by the way.
I think Rolls looks tacky. "Look at me, I'm rich" vs Bentley, which is fancy but more understated. I guess people want tacky.
There's nothing understated about a bentley ...
Nothing understated about a Bentley. You know it when you see it just like a Rolls.
@Shivris okay true. They can be tacky, too. I guess I meant by comparison.
You are absolutely correct lol. Mulsanne ewb is the best most classy limousine in the world
One is only a 80% waste of money while the other is a 100% waste!
Doug's dad bod has a grandpa bod.
8 minutes of Doug being entertaining plus some guy ruining it by scrolling randomly in the background. Amateur…
The Bentley looks better than the rolls imo. I think what kennan said is true but will change within the next 10 years
Big difference between DEPRECIATION and CORRECTION
Meaning some cars are just overpriced
If you are worried about the depreciation of a Rolls Royce...you can't afford one.
