The drummer here is the legendary and one of the most respected drummers since the early '70s Steve Gadd!! Basically he has played everything with everyone!!

Steve Gadd's work on AJA is widely documented. He just did an interview with Rick Beato that is definitely worth checking out. You can see him actually pulling off the triplet lick all over YT.....demos and lessons.
One of the best I have ever listened to!
It was great to watch that interview. Steve emphasized how the basic rudiments (flams, paradiddles, drags) are fundamental for him. Of course he makes it look easy, but you can hear it in his work.

Steve Gadd is so freaking awesome but is over looked for many other drummers, all of which are worthy, but Gadd just gets overlooked, the dude is phenomenal; Steve Gadd isn't just the "drummers drummer", he is the musicians drummer, maybe it takes a certain ear to hear his talent

One of my favorite moments in music when the sax and drums go off together here.
Only learned recently Shorter was on this track, (and only in the last few years I've grown very fond and appreciative of jazz and all the greats,) then I was like, holy smokes, I've been listening to Wayne Shorter since I was a kid, too cool!

There are no clunkers in Steely Dan’s entire catalog. So many gems.
Lore is that Steve Gadd nailed that whole song within two takes...
And that at a later date when it was being played back to him in the studio, didn't realize it was him.

I love Steely Dan, it's a mixture of rock, jazz and funk
It is. But it's very much pop too. I don't mean that dismissively either, it's a compliment. They are certainly not a fusion band like Weather Report or Mahavishnu Orchestra. There's something very crisp and accessible about Steely Dan. There's never a spare note, it never sounds overcooked. In fact, it's easy to overlook their complexity cos they're so damn catchy!
@@SpuddySpud I think it's thanks to Donald Fagen, he was the leader of Steely Dan, he also has a couple of good solo albums, for example "The Nightfly" in 1982 or "Kamakiriad"
@@spawn4582 The Nightly is a fantastic album. Kamakiriad didn't grab me as much but it has its moments. Everything Steely Dan did was first class though. Walter Becker did some solo stuff too but I'm not familiar with it
After seeing the Steve Gadd Band live in Sydney ( Aus ) a few years back , it dawned on me Steve doesn’t ‘ hit’ his drums , he caresses them . Such dynamics and control .
( the 5.1 DVD ‘ Way Back Home ‘ is outstanding , btw )
So , another recorded performance showing his finesse is Rickie Lee Jones’s ‘ Chuck Es in Love ‘ ( sorry if someone else has mentioned it )

The musicianship and production in this group was superb. It's hard to believe popular music was once this good.
If you like Steve Gadd's playing, you'll want to hear him on "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" by Paul Simon. That's another signature groove he's known for.
Outstanding professional musicians with exacting standards. Something that is rarely seen today.
Steely Dan is a genre all their own.
There's a channel called "In my Drumroom" that has some great talks with Steve Gadd. Jim Keltner, too, who also played on a few of Steely Dan's greatest tracks. "Josie" in particular. The rivalry between the two drummers over who's track got chosen for what song is hilariously entertaining.
That was Steve Gadd, a drumming legend. Steely Dan used many hired guns, after the first couple albums Fagan and Becker were the only constants.
I have yet to hear a bad Steely Dan song, but Aja is definitely next level. High art.

Steve Gadd on drums! Anyone who loves drums must know about Steve. He’s been Eric Clapton’s drummer now for years. Steely Dan only had two members believe it or not 🤔 Donald Fagen and Walter Becker (r I p), a true studio band.
This was number 1 on Rick Beato's top ten drum fills of all time.. He wasn't sure if his studio drummer could even play it.
Just my opinion but Steely Dan is in a class all it's own. Without a doubt, when song reactors come to Steely Dan they are almost always blown away by them. So creative and fanatical about the fine detail of their music. They're definitely one of my favorite groups. WAs lucky enough to see them in concert as well.
I saw them live as well. I didn't think Aja could be played live but they did it. Stunning.

Steve Gadd on drums . They wanted a more of a jazz run . Steve lived around the corner from me in Rochester NY area . The Eastman School of Music was a start for many musicians. There's a YT vid of Rick Beato interviewing Steve , worth checking out for sure for drummers and all musicians. Thanks

You will probably be surprised that on the album "Aja", I believe there were six drummers on only seven tracks. All of them great!

The drummer Steve Gadd also plays that iconic beat in Paul Simon's 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover.
Another measure of how good this whole Lp was and how highly it was regarded is the frequency it was played at concert venues before and between sets. So often and more than anything else. I have wonderful memories being in concert crowds watching people vibe and sway to this music while waiting for the live band to start.
One of my favorite albums of all time!
It's not a group!..In the early stages, yes, but later on it was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen inviting hired guns to come play on their albums..They used some of them numerous times, like McDonald, Bernard Purdie, Larry Carleton, Chuck Rainey, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, and others..I think this is the only track Gadd has ever played on for them, and he blew them away, as you can hear, here.
Steely Dan is hard to put in one box…every song is a musical journey. ☮️❤️

You're going to hear your "new" favorite Steely Dan song quite often as you journey through their catalogue. Aja is one of a kind, as are most, if not all of their songs. There's so many great songs, just keep reacting to more. It will definitely be a great ride.
This album is used as an audiophile reference for evaluating hifi performance. It’s among the most respected recordings ever made and represents the pinnacle of 70s technology and recording techniques.
Also, this year, 1977, is likely the Overall Peak which our civilization has ever reached. While good things happened before and after, I believe this was the top.
When I was just a kid in the '70's my mom had a really cool record collection, it was all just music to me, some bands I liked better than others of course, but I can still fondly remember looking at then listening to this album on vinyl with nice headphones for the first time, it then became an oasis in a very violent and turbulent time in my young life. I had no concept of what they were singing about or just how complex the music really was, it just became a beautiful escape beyond all the other chaos in my life and a doorway into a realm of music that was far beyond most of the typical radio hits being played, most of which were actually quite good. "Home At Last" spoke to me very much, but "Aja" was on another planet as far as time signatures and composition, again, things I had no concept of, it was just such a cool and different groove altogether, I cherish this album.

Steely Dan used a lot of different session musicians on their albums. Most, if not all, of them were elite musicians of that time period.
Larry Carlton is a session guitarist they featured a lot and is probably the best guitarist most people have never heard of. He is a very signature part of their sound and ties this track in with a lot of their earlier material
The Great Steely Dan are in a different plateau than other bands bro 💫❤️☝️

Theres no other song where i get layers upon layers of goosebumps on that final section, and I've heard this song so many times over the years.

As a drummer, you need to check out the hour long 6 part documentary here on YT of "The Making of Aja" to understand what Steely Dan was all about and how they made their music with the highest production standards while utilizing the best drummers of the day and insights to them that I know you'll appreciate. I left a link and with this same comment, but YT seems to delete comments when you leave a link, even though its from their own channel. Go figure.
Walter Becker and Donald Fagen used a variety of musicians on the Aja album, choosing them to suit the individual tracks. On this one, Fagen sang lead and played synthesizer, while Becker, Denny Dias and Larry Carlton handled guitars. On backing vocals is Timothy B. Schmit, who joined the Eagles that same year. Other musicians on the track are:

Gadd's drum work in this song is legendary, but what sticks (pun) out to me is probably the most subtle feature, to end a drum fill with a single stick click is just brilliance imo, the silence is deafening...
I first heard the album the week it came out in 1977. Blown away. A reviewer in a major newspaper broke down the meaning of the song line- by- line regarding what he thought it was about. DF said it was about an Asian girlfriend of a friend. The reviewer said it is about Richard Nixon's second trip to China after resigning the Presidency. It makes sense when you analyze each line in the song.
One of the bands best albums.
I learned recently that, in spite of the fact that Eric Clapton often changes out the personnel of his band, when he needs a band he can count on in difficult situations he gets Steve Gadd, Nathan East and Chris Stainton. While they're obviously friends I'm still impressed with Eric Clapton that he can actually get these guys when he needs them. They might be the core of the band traveling with him this current tour and at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in Los Angeles.

Don’t forget the third album of what I call the trilogy even tho Don did it without Walter. It’s “ The Nightfly” and “ Maxine” will slay you. All of it.
Vibraphones and marimbas are the percussion instruments you’re hearing. They’re like big xylophones and used a lot in jazz. Steely Dan uses them a lot. Certainly much more than most bands of the time
Marimba for sure but I'm not sure about vibes on this track. Maybe buried under the piano parts? Anyhow I'm pretty sure it's studio great Vic Feldman playing the marimba parts.
Yeah true maybe no vibes on this one actually now that I listen closely. Definitely marimbas. They would use vibes underneath piano chords a lot like on Home at Last and Haitian Divorce off the top of my head and then they would use them as solo instruments of course on tunes like Razor Boy and Negative Girl. And yes definitely the legendary Victor Feldman playing them as well as the regular percussion like the shakers and all that stuff. Feldmen is the only guy besides Donald and Walter to play on all 7 of the classic 70s Dan albums.
Kansas' Steve Walsh rocked the Vibraphone on a couple albums in the mid-70s.
@@Cavie1974 Actually, I think there is some xylophone --- shorter sustain than marimba and not as warm.
@@Cavie1974 Dead on with the marimbas. A marimba is like a xylophone but with wooden keys instead of metal giving it a very unique sound.
Steely Dan wanted to expand the musicianship when making the album " Aja " and used something like 40 different session musicians in the process. Steve Gadds drumming on this track is flawless and the best way I could describe the closing is a great fireworks finale. I could listen to this album everyday and not get tired of it

Chod... you'll get a bunch of great drummers with Steely Dan, they used a lot of the best ever. From Jeff Porcaro, Jim Hodder, Bernard Purdie to Steve Gadd on this song. They used the best musicians in the studio.
Steve Gadd, that's the right one for this track. One of the best session drummers ever, he's also well known for the drum part (the hook of the song, really) on Paul Simon's "50 ways to leave your lover". He's played in a number of Jazz combos, too.

Chad, you probably remember reacting to "Black Cow" and "Deacon Blues" from the album "Aja." I just looked it up, and that unusual sound you heard is a vibraphone, played by Victor Feldman. The drummer on Aja was Steve Gadd.

The beauty of Steely Dan's catalog is you don't have to select a favorite. You can just enjoy the entire catalog, favoring one album or song or another song or album or solo work at different times and never grow tired of the music. Rather than think in terms of a favorite, I think of what song(s) I would recommend to new listeners first, based on what I know about their tastes.
I knew you would dig Steve Gadd's drum work on this cut. Many of Steely Dan's albums used guest musicians. Steve Gadd was someone that I knew from his jazz work. If I'm not mistaken he worked with Chick Corea among others. Aja (pronounced Asia) is considered to be Steely Dan's masterpiece although every one of their albums is great in its own way.

I couldn't stop smiling each time you heard Steve Gadd come in. Amazing thing is that he played this cold off of a chart. Evidently Fagen & Becker just told him to "play like hell" on the later part of Wayne Shorter's sax solo. SD were always known to work with the top studio musicians (given that they didn't really have a "permanent" band). On this particular album, they brought in Jim Keltner, Rick Marotta, Steve Gadd and - most surprisingly to me - Bernard Purdie (he played on 2 of the 7 tracks). Wayne Shorter was no slouch on sax; Jay Graydon, Denny Dias, Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour on guitar; Tom Scott arranging/playing horns; etc. etc. BTW - listen for Gadd's stick click part way through the sax solo. Fagen thought it was a mistake and was going to edit it out, but apparently Gadd purposely recreated it on the second take. So great for an old man like me to watch you discover this gold. Thank you!

I love the fact there is a lot of percussion instruments right through the whole track. It sounds awesome through a pair of KZ iems.
For me personally this is my favourite Dan song.
The masterpiece of masterpieces
The song is unique in that Fagen, Becker and Katz knew that they had a smooth jazz/pop song moving along, BUT wanted to shake things up in the bridge solo and trail-off, hence bringing in the Gadd's drum and Shorter's sax solos overlapping each other complete with the changes in rhythm.
The song goes from pop/jazz to masterpiece in one broad stroke.
Why I love watching reaction videos. Your face, knowing you're a drummer during Gadd's firsts solo/dueting with the sax player

Everyone who is captivated by this record should check out the DVD documentary called "The Making of AJA." It is highly enjoyable and fascinating to hear Donald and Walter and the session guys talking about how the album was recorded. Enlightening, funny, and inspirational. Check it out.

This drum solo on Aja by Steve Gadd is considered top 10 in drum solos....Steve is a renown jazz master drummer....I am shocked you didn't know??

I just heard Bernard Purdie play Home at Last at a small jazz club on March 31. He’s 84 and didn’t miss a beat!! The man’s still got the groove.
Mine too. It doesn't get as much play as it deserves.
I think the best way to describe this album (and particularly this cut) is a mix of rock, jazz and classical because of all the tempos, directions and rides they take you on. An all time favorite of mine.

R.I.P. Wayne Shorter, saxophonist extraordinaire, passed away only 6 weeks ago. His solo here with the equally legendary drummer Steve Gadd is EPIC.
