I haven’t seen any of these until last weeks podcast came out and I decided now is the time. I binged the trilogy 3 nights in a row and am now pretty upset with myself I didn’t watch Before Sunrise when I was in my early 20s. I fell in love with the first film as a 38 year old married w/ kid guy, but I think I know how it would have made me feel seeing it at that time in my life. Conversely Before Midnight hit so damn close to home it’s kinda frightening and heartening at the same time.
This pod is one of the most incredible in a while and all the more wonderful knowing that these are 4 of the 6 most senior people at The Ringer 🤩 It’s the perfect encapsulation of the pod culture side of the website. Great work guys 👏🏼
I'll never understand why bill doesn't listen to the great Larry David and announce the movie beforehand so folks can watch or rewatch the films before listening.
I loved Before Sunrise. I had no expectation prior to watching Before Sunset. It will exceeded my expectation. In terms of sequels here are my favorites in order: 1) Godfather II 2) Before Sunset 3) Terminator II
To piggy back on Courtney C.'s mailbag idea, I suggest the name of the which Jennifer category be called 'Jenn X'... Explaining your choice could be called 'Jenn Why?' Okay, I'm done now, thanks for all the sweet, sweet movie content!
Mallory is one of the coolest chicks on the planet she was hilarious in this episode, and her insight and passion was infectious, as someone who is already also obsessed with these movies.
I sympathize with the producer's feelings about sequels, but this trilogy doesn't really work that way. Sunset succeeds because it has so many fundamental differences from Sunrise. The characters themselves aren't the same as they were. The opening is different. The ending is way different. Even the sacred Godfather II starts out kinda the same as Godfather I - big party scene. And ends the same: violent and ironic montage. Replaying the hits. The movie, not having so many "hits", doesn't really replay them, beyond the act of having a convo. All this also applies to Midnight, so put it on Rewatchables, Simmons, don't be cowardly. Life isn't always about (French accent) "I'm going to bang you to the musique of Nina Simone, la la la, watch me dance". My nitpick for Sunset: I would be really surprised if any Parisians consider the Shakespeare bookstore to be their favorite. Too touristy, que non?
Chris Ryan could simply wear hoodies and joggers at all times(I try to) and would be so much better off than the polos I wore at age 5 in 1992 and all white tennys lol.
Met my European wife on a train to Berlin in '91 when she was outside my cabin having a smoke, returned to Europe eight months later to reunite, got married in June 1994. Didn't have a son named "Hank."
CR's hot take is the right one and I wish the pod had spent more time exploring it. Before Sunset is not romantic. Jesse and Celine are monsters. Jesse gets married knowing full well that he can't let go of the night he spent with Celine, writes a book about that night while married and fathering a child with said wife, goes to Paris on a tour for that book hoping to reunite with Celine and decides to ditch his wife and kid within an hour of meeting her again. That's not romantic. Jesse is not a hero. He's a scumbag. All I can think of is his wife - who married someone who was carrying a torch for someone else under the (clearly false) pretenses that he was fully committed to their life together - getting a call from this deadbeat saying that he's staying in Paris with the girl he screwed nine years ago. Mal's take that Midnight is the best of the three is the right one because it makes them actually deal with the consequences of their actions.
All of these new categories are turning the podcast into a an incohesive mess. I get wanting the audience to feel included or whatever but a category name shouldn’t take 30 seconds to say that is detached from anything remotely related to the movie at hand. What are we even doing here.
@mcnooj82 I dunno, man. How Did This Get Made is still a banger of a podcast and their catalog is significantly more robust than the RW is. And has been around for a lot longer.
@@Oryx7000 I haven't listened to HDTGM for a long long time due to burning out on the overall hyperbolic tone. Glad to hear that it hasn't been burdened with inside jokes! Maybe it helps that they're all comedians/performers? To be fair, it's not that I don't still enjoy Rewatchables. It was really more of a comment about how consistently I've seen people complain about people burning out on their favorite podcast after a while due to various things
@ Perhaps you see this elsewhere. Which is fair. And. I have listened to lots of different movie pods for many years. And while the format is consistent, it doesn’t get stale. Bill is a horrible listener. Or rather he’s not an active listener. It’s starting to sound like he’s ticking boxes and scrambles to finish at the end without thinking. Which is just bad podcasting. Same old lame ass takes over and over and over. But to each their own.
Hahaha he’s got an empire to run! gotta pump things out on a schedule! Probably helps that I don’t listen to any of these regularly. (I’m also the furthest you can get from a sports guy, so bill has always been the weak link for me)
Be serious...but to name a few...Godfather Part 2, Empire Strikes Back, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Terminator 2, From Russia with Love, The Dark Knight, Aliens, Dune 2, Paddington 2...
....Lethal Weapon 2, Top Gun: Maverick.... And good shit mentioning From Russia With Love. Most people don't think of that is a direct sequel but it is and is one of the few true Bond SEQUELS until the Craig era. All the other Bond movies until Casino Royale work as stand alone movies.
How is Sideways bigger than this film in any way other than apparently being made by a bigger studio? If they complete the trilogy next week, I will pass out.
early valentine's day special.. has to be
@@allistar34absolutely brutal valentines special
Bill: there should have been more eating in this movie
Mal: In more ways than one
You can count on Mal needing a trip to horny jail at some point in every Rewatchables pod she’s in
"Memories are wonderful as long as you don't have to deal with the past." Love that.
"How's the cheating, Jesse?" as PSH cracked me tf up. Mallory is great.
I love these folks!! Never miss an episode, doesn't matter if I've seen the movie or not

God damn it, Mallory is the fucking best. Put her on every pod.
I just rewatched the movie with captions and Celine says “I didn’t know your last name, nothing” during their walk to the cafe!
Baby, you’re gonna miss that plane…
I know...

And my god, the Wayne Jenkins 😂😂
I'll never understand why bill doesn't listen to the great Larry David and announce the movie beforehand so folks can watch or rewatch the films before listening.
He briefly mentioned it in the intro to Sunday's pod with Sal, but that's easy to miss and not very much of a warning!
No one understands it. Should be question 7 in his great questions of life
I actually prefer rewatching it after listening to the episode
Its not like you need to listen to the pod immediately.
just watched the whole trilogy for the first time this past week. incredible
They have to do Before Midnight!
I loved Before Sunrise. I had no expectation prior to watching Before Sunset. It will exceeded my expectation. In terms of sequels here are my favorites in order:
1) Godfather II
2) Before Sunset
3) Terminator II
I rewatched the movie last week after Sunrise. I listened to this pod, rewatched it again, and am now rewatching the pod. What a masterpiece
Me too! 2x in a week basically
Craig's "what's aged the worst" is so on point.
CR wheezing in the background at 53:20 has made me laugh like five times in a row
Just do the third, don't overthink it, it's what the fans want and this is this is the right timing
I would take a solo episode of a four hour long unbroken monologue from Mallory as a consolation
fumble of the century not doing the trilogy pod, these last two have been some of my favourites
Thank you for this. For both of these.
Thank you.
Hell ya, you did. I liked this movie better than the first.
If we don’t get the live Before Midnight pod in Greece next week, I will crash out.
Before Midnight, with Bill, Linklater, Hawke, and Delphy
@@ryanmckayw And Mal
Looking forward to Before Midnight next week
haven’t laughed harder on the pod as I did at 1:12:57 lmfao
GenX, felt the room's collective held breath hearing Craig's referendum on our gen's cornerstone romance saga.
Best trilogy of all time next to LOTR. I watch them back-to-back-to-back at least every two years.
46:00 smoke show is "spectacle de fumée" 😋 "canon" maybe
Craig's take on Ethan Hawke is so dead on. He's become the dominant closer of The Rewatchables.
The promo still has Mal smiling like she just made the horniest comment yet to grace a rewatchables episode
Shoutouts to Kirk Hinrich ! Gritty combo guard with a smooth jumper.
🙋🏻♂️ I saw it first.
When did CR complete his Woody Johnson transition?
Niiiiiiiice!! Quaded
Do short cuts!!
14:00 OMG she is so insanely right about everything there. Most romantic scene I’ve ever personally seen.
To piggy back on Courtney C.'s mailbag idea, I suggest the name of the which Jennifer category be called 'Jenn X'...
Explaining your choice could be called 'Jenn Why?'
Okay, I'm done now, thanks for all the sweet, sweet movie content!
The best Pod in a minute……Craig sayin smarmy and smug is like the black kettle calling the Boston kettle…….😮😂
“This Time” means that this time might be different.
do the third one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! plz
Letterboxd always catching strays.
One of the greatest movie endings of all time.
Mallory is one of the coolest chicks on the planet she was hilarious in this episode, and her insight and passion was infectious, as someone who is already also obsessed with these movies.
One of the very best movies ever. Second to G2 for sure.
Love a Mal appearance!
They did Godfather 3 so if we don't get Before Midnight, well, I don't know what I'll do.
o helllllll yeah i was like no way you guys are gonna do the first one without the sequels!!!
That reveal at the end she wrote a song about their night is just top tier. One of my favorite endings ever.
Apex Mountain for movie couples: Clarence and Alabama.
I refuse to watch the sequels because Before Sunrise was so perfect, but I might change my mind.
Fav sequels are Last Crusade and BR2049.
I promise you, Sunset and Midnight are some of the best sequels ever made. You will not be disappointed.
before sunset seems to be the populist favorite of the 3, if that means anything to you
Oh shit you're in for a ride
Sunset is my favorite...The fact it exceeds Sunrise in many ways is astonishing to me...watch them all

Before Midnight is the best one - my hot take
That table is brought to you by Reese's
Céline says they didn’t exchange last names.
Bill is my hero. No one like him
Hope we can complete the trilogy for the next rewatchables
Don't listen to Mal and watch BM yet, Craig... be a beautiful boy meeting cute over and over like it's the first time with Liz 1:36:00
No. It is The Godfather, Part II.
Never heard of any of these movies
Love these films but I love more debased films like Your Friends and Neighbors.
Mallory en fuego
The past 50 years takes us back to 1975, so I'm going to say no. In no particular order: Aliens, T2, The Dark Knight, Dune Part 2
Mal is freaky as hell 😂
Thanks for adding a female to the group for this one
Never heard of it or the prequel
48:20
FYI 80 degrees is very hot in France. I think the feline will be okay.
waking life is good
that's my only comment about this trilogy
The best sequel of the past 50 years is aliens
T2
Aliens
White sneakers w black socks Sean? Nerd!
No it's not
