So freaking amazed by the tremendous woodworking skills you demonstrated in this episode. I cannot wait to see the violin is oiled and these colors show their real potential.
just got the first coat on today! The videos take a while to edit and such so it will be coming up soonish. My favorite color in the whole thing is the crab apple sides!
Well who woulda thought I could get emotional about a tiny piece of mesquite...? It's not just an instrument, it's not just art, it's a memorial too. Thanks Daniel, once again, I appreciate you sharing this with us. Josh
I’ve always appreciated the emphasis you put on story when it comes to your work. Implementing the story of the woods coming from Georgetown to Sitka much like the windows coming from elsewhere to Sitka is awesome!
Your aesthetic and your skills impress me more each time I watch one of these videos. I am especially appreciative of your creativity in stepping back from the way instruments "have" to look and putting your own influence on them.
Beautiful piece of inlay work. I see one of your thumb planes has handles, I’ve never seen one like that before. Could you tell me where you purchased it please.
It was actually a gift from a friend. I have no idea where he got it. I have not seen one like it since. But he gave me two. So they must have been more production oriented. But I dont know.
The first wood I really did work of my own in was mesquite. My first real mentor help me figure out how to turn Dumbek drums and latter we built several djembes all out of mesquite.
Daniel, WOW! I would have been having a heart attack, taking the body of the violin out of the mold and routering out the back for the inlay. I love, love, love the story of the woods for the inlay. I also love that a part of Mr. Sitka will live in Sitka. THANK YOU!
Sandpaper leaves finer and finer scratches and feels smooth usually because there is dust in the pores. But when you put finish on it those things show up. The scraper is a cleaner cut but also makes no dust so it won't hurt my lungs. Hope that helps.
Template would be what you base the form off of. It is called a mold just because it is inside and you bend the work around it. But I don't see why template doesn't work as well. I just use a template to make the mold.

Love the story behind the materials in the instrument. That will go with it throughout the ages long after we are gone.
Thanks so much. That's the hope.
Beautiful Daniel! I would love to see you cutting these pieces with the laser.
maybe I could do that in the future.

Why scrapers instead of sandpaper?

Please forgive my poor English, I live in UK but I'm Italian. The part that you call mold shouldn't be called template? What is the difference?
