@@rinusvandenberg3041 Beamish is lovely and a treasure in the north east crown. However, for me, I couldn’t be dragged screaming back to the place. Growing up we had numerous cousins living abroad. Every summer, every single summer without we took them there on their visit to see family. I’m talking twenty years and I suspect they wouldn’t want to go back either.
Joking apart it is very interesting and well worth a visit. The Beamish Mary is worth a visit for a tipple or two

I went to school in Hexham between 1973-1978 and honestly, it hasn't changed that much. Those stone steps in the Abbey bring back memories of where we held the school Xmas carol services on the platform at the top - never been so cold in my life! Just one inaccuracy, the Sele is actually the hill behind the park where the annual guy Fawkes Fireworks Display and bonfire is held. Also, for the locals St Mary's Chare is always just called 'Back Street' but thats just us stubbornly refusing to use the right name, not a fault of your video :). Hexham is a half hour walk round at most but got some great cafes and one or two decent pubs but Corbridge down the road is better for a pint.

I wish other Northumberland areas would get this sort of well documented historical overviews. Hexham, Alnwick, Newcastle, Morpeth, etc always get brilliant coverage. Yet Bedlington, Ashington are often leftovers. Probably because they don’t conform to stereotypical “quaint Northumbrian town” and are abit rougher 😅

I spent a couple of days here this summer.
Very pleasant old town that has largely escaped modernisation (apart from some big supermarkets on the outskirts).
Cathedral is fantastic, well worth a couple of hours. Good place to aimlessly stroll around, plenty of cafes and pubs to rest your feet.
From here in the summer. you can catch a bus which will take you along very close to Hadrian's Wall
Some locals told me to avoid in winter-too dark and cold- but they did say stargazing on a clear winter night is spectacular.
If that tickles your fancy, wrap up well, and bring a camera and binoculars

I lived, for, a time, in a Hexham Victorian terrace that was built up to the west of the Abbey. The buildings that share the mound of the abbey are, themselves, stable (Hence their survival, all this time) but much of the lower and western town is rapidly falling away into the river due to soil erosion and may not survive the century. Much of the town's infrastructure is also a bit ropey, and the local newspaper - the 'Hexham Courant' - (when I lived there) went out of its way to make Hexham sound like some low-key Chicago. Suffice it to say, I do not miss my time living in Hexham. Hexham exists to show that you can live your entire life by the River Tyne, and not be a Tynesider, and that spending your entire lives wishing you were Corebridge, while quietly satisfied you're not Prudhoe, will not make your home a desirable location to the outside world, Hexham: dire town full if higher-functioning alcoholics that spends half its year in shadows on the shaded Hills of Hexhamshire, to south of it.
