After bending the front bumper of my 07 Silverado Classic, by hitting my first deer, here in Texas; I began searching on TH-cam for instructions on how to repair it. Though it became a journey to locate all of the parts online(opposed to paying high priced dealer parts), properly disassemble the entire front end, replace parts, paint parts, and put everything back together; it was your/this video that gave me the confidence and proper instruction to go the distance and fully repair myself. Everything came out better than it was; before the poor deer was victimized by my 45mph bumper. Thank you!
Matthew Chamakese Your buddy didn't scuff the chrome good enough or didn't clean it good enough. Or he used junk spray can paint. Plasti-dip is for guys that can't paint.
Matthew Chamakese You are telling people that your buddy did the same thing and it didn't last. That is a complete LIE. If you do it the way I show you can get many many years out of good quality paint. I could care less what you think of me or my videos. You are spreading LIES.
I don't have a video on smoking chrome. I do have a video on smoking my lights. It's the same concept except you can't scuff the chrome before you start smoking it or chrome won't shine through. Just clean it really well. Our Wisconsin winters finally took it's toll on this grill and I had to repaint it.
There is no need to have 55w in your fogs or low beams. 55w is for high beams or low beams with a projector. 35w is more than enough. The only thing you are doing is making people mad and possible ruin it for the rest of us using HID/LED correctly.
I understand back roads. Good fog lights can really light up the ditches and side of the roads and help avoid a deer hit. Blinding people is not good though. If a lot of people are flashing you they are too bright or aimed to high. Some people are more sensitive to light.
So you didn't sand at all?? Trying to make my grille on my infiniti g35 just like the gloss black on yours. Thing is, there is clear coat on top that is peeling, o'riley people say I need to sand it off with 800 grit, spray over with flat adhesion primer, sand that with 1200 grit and then put the gloss black on top and to swinish and protect they say to put clear coat. What do you think??
***** I scuffed up the whole grill. Paint won't stick if you don't sand or scuff. If you have peeling clear coat you have to sand it down. If you don't sand it down it will continue to peel even after you paint it. Your top coat is only as good as your bottom coat. If you have good solid paint you can just scuff and paint. All paint systems have different steps before and while painting. You are probably going to have to sand it with like 400 grit to get the clear off. Your paint system should tell you what grit you need to have for your top coats. With the Dupont paint you need 400 grit for your color and clear. It's up to you if you want to use adhesion promoter. The clear is what gives you the deep shine.
***** I used thinner because I painted over chrome. If you put thinner on your grill it will take everything off. I would leave the factory paint on it. It should make a good base for new paint. So you can just sand the bad clear off and paint. Using the factory primer and color as a primer. 800 grit will not do much. That grit would be used for buffing. Like if you put a ton of cleat on and planned to sand and buff it. That kind of stuff is usually done to show cars not daily drivers.
Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question...I have a 2016 GMC Sierra SLE and I want to paint the front trim black. It looks chrome but is actually plastic. If i scruff it up a little bit, throw some primer down and a few coats of paint, I should be good right?Or do I need to remove some of that shiny finish with a solvent?
There are some plastic studs with nuts screwed onto them. Not sure exactly what they are called but the nut grabs the plastic when you turn it. You need to be careful with them. They can strip easily.
+Hector Munoz This grille still looks great. I did the same technique to a grill back in 2003 to my 2002 I had at the time. I sold the truck to a local guy and the last time I saw it the grille looked great. You do have to remember this is the front of the truck so rock chips will happen. You are not going to stop that.
Quest2Aesthetics I use what my local CARQUEST carries. It is Dupont automotive paint but there are a lot of other paint that will work. You won't get pro results out of a spray can.
Paul Yeah, I don't think it hangs any lower than the boss mount. I have 10.5" of ground clearance under the plow mount. That is probably more than most trucks have for bumper clearance :) I do hate the look of it. If I keep the plow next year I will most likely remove the mounts for summer.
You might be able to find them at the auto parts store. Here is a link to what the nuts I am talking about www.ebay.com/itm/30-pc-thread-cutting-emblem-name-plate-script-nuts-sealer-assortment-GM-GMC-/131891823066?vxp=mtr&hash=item1eb55d81da . Those are probably not the ones you need.
Michelle Placencia I don't know the size of the stud. It's been a long time since I had the grille off. You will have to measure your stud and then find the nuts that work.
mossman381 leds are bad. Im an expert in hids and leds. go on theretrofitsource.com and find projectors but leds are only good with projectors designed around leds which are only oem projectors for now.
Dominique Sanchez I don't buy into that only new cars can run HID and LED. Factory HID blinds the crap out of me. You know when you are blinding people because you will get flashed. I turn my lights down a bit too.
Dominique Sanchez I have never been flashed with HID or now with LED. I only have experience with 9005 and 9006 bulbs in the Silverado housings. I know some housings are worse than other when it comes to distributing light. I have had good luck with mine.
Dude mossman. I love it. How is it holding up? Is there anything you would have done different ? I got mine taken apart too and gathering material and will be painting in about a week. Thanks
lopezbmx86duece If you opened your ears you might have learned something. If you used your eyes you would see the title of the video doesn't say HOW TO. Just showing how I striped and painted my grill. This is just a hobby for me. There are tons of videos done by professional body guys all over TH-cam. You must like wasting your time to leave a stupid comment like this.

I wouldn't call this an instructional video. More of a vlog of painting my grille. I do tell all the steps but don't get into detail on paint and sand paper. You could ask questions like other people do if you wanted to know what I used.
You can't go more coarse than 400 grit or you will see the scratches through the paint. You just want to take the shine away. I think the gray scuff pads will work too.

+Phil L Those deer are annoying when they jump in front of you. Glad you got your truck back together better than before.
Good job buddy. Just goes to show you as long as you take your time and don't rush it, it always turns out great
FFJNVT Thanks, I have done this a few times. Never stripped the paint off a grill before but have painted many grills.

Matthew Chamakese Go back and actually read my comment. The answers are right in front of you.
Hey my 02 2500 hd grille chrome part is peeling can i still paint it to color match my truck or how can I do it ?
do you have a video on how you did the smoked chrome it looks nice
I don't have a video on smoking chrome. I do have a video on smoking my lights. It's the same concept except you can't scuff the chrome before you start smoking it or chrome won't shine through. Just clean it really well. Our Wisconsin winters finally took it's toll on this grill and I had to repaint it.

what kind of paint did you use sir?
Automotive paint from CARQUEST.
Did you scuff each part of the mesh centers? If so how'd you do so?
You just have to do the best you can with scuff pads or sand paper. Your fingers will feel real good when your done.
I did play on my grill and bumper lately...vid to come
Veikra Get it uploaded man.
Suspense !
Wow that looks great

Chrome needs to be scuffed really good before paint. I have had good success with a good scuff then a few coats of etching primer then paint.
Plasti dip and be done...just a quick wipe down with solvent.....then spray.
Well this video is a waste of time unless you just want to know this guys thought process
how did you get the chrome piece to snap onto the grill. Do you need clips
There are some plastic studs with nuts screwed onto them. Not sure exactly what they are called but the nut grabs the plastic when you turn it. You need to be careful with them. They can strip easily.
You painted chrom ?
how did you make the smoked chrome look? hard to tell in the video but it looked pretty good in the begining
+Tim O I used tinted clear coat. I loved the look but after a couple winters it started peeling off.
+mossman381 interesting. thanks for the info
mossman381 how many coats of tinted coat did you use? btw great look
@@ithuriel0807 yes
55w 5k they are really white and bright
Has it chipped at all ? I'm going to do the same thing on a truck ?
+Hector Munoz This grille still looks great. I did the same technique to a grill back in 2003 to my 2002 I had at the time. Is that piece under the truck for a snow plow? I'm not from snow country so I was wondering what it was.
Yes, mount for a snowplow.
looks amazing!!!
Thanks
Un tinte the headlights and they will become brighter
Where did you order your grill at?
Cody Watts GM dealer. I believe it was around $350.
Did you use paint gun or spray cans with your exact paint code
Pro paint gun with automotive paint. You can't get this kind of result with cans.
Kool look.
James Thomas Thanks
Mossman, what headlights do you have installed? where did you order them?
Lights are from Ebay. Those were Depot projector lights that I smoked.
Which paint and clear do you recommend it looks awesome. I'm going to paint a plastic kidney grill on my gs350
Quest2Aesthetics I use what my local CARQUEST carries. It is Dupont automotive paint but there are a lot of other paint that will work. You won't get pro results out of a spray can.
damn that plow mount really hangs low!

Yeaa those are not it
Michelle Placencia I don't know the size of the stud. It's been a long time since I had the grille off. You will have to measure your stud and then find the nuts that work.
did you use etching primer on the grill itself or just scuffed it and painted it
You can, I have done it with etching primer, regular primer and no primer. I would prime it with the etching primer while you are priming the chrome.
You need to retrofit your headlights to projectors
Everything has changed and I am now running LED headlights.
mossman381 leds are bad. Im an expert in hids and leds. go on theretrofitsource.com and find projectors but leds are only good with projectors designed around leds which are only oem projectors for now.

It's holding up great. Would do it exactly the same again.
wats the brand for the paint
Isai Monteking Dupont
looks nice. :)

ur welcome. :)
how did you get the black crome affect??
Sprayed on tinted clear coat.
Disappointing video. All dialogue and no actual visual demonstration. Wasted my time.

seems like a DIY video and no instructions or your step process? or even the products you used...... 😒
If you understood nothing in the video you should stick with plasti-dip.

You should get a led light bar for the front
csx276 I like the clean look of nothing on the front. With my hid's I don't really need anymore light.
Okay thanks anyway
Horrible video
You should keep using plasti-dip.
@@mossman381 oh yeah?
Yeah, you should leave the professional paints to someone that knows how to use them.
How bout you do the world a favor and delete this vid from TH-cam cuz its horrible.
Why would I listen to a TH-cam troll?
what sand grit did you use to scuff the crome center bar
You can't go more coarse than 400 grit or you will see the scratches through the paint. You just want to take the shine away. I think the gray scuff pads will work too.
+mossman381 coo coo thanks a lot
Did you wet sand it???
