Angels are actually schoolingfish and they need a bigger (higher) aquarium because they can reach a ft in height. Imo it is not smart to take 1 angel in your 2 ft tank unless you are very experienced and have a backup aquarium. I think it is better to choose a different fish from the list in that case. But that is my opinion, enjoyed the video nick!🙌
I have a plakat betta in a 40L tank with 7 pygmy corydoras and tons of cherry shrimp (I lost count xdd). He's a sweetheart, super calm, and has never fought with any tank mates. He watches the shrimp like they're his pets... Good selection and great video :)
@dtw1622 as has mine. Mollys, platys, rummy nose tetras, peacock eels, mystery snails, and Tony Danza the angelfish tank boss. They all do great together.
I have medium size community tank with lots of fish types - wasn't sure about the dalmation molly's - but they all fit right in and look amazing too. xxxx
For 20 gal tanks I prefer the 20 long. More surface area for the fish to swim around. I have some small tetras and a few platies in the tank. The colors are amazing on some of those platies. My center piece fish is a three spotted gourami. So far she’s been awesome in the tank and so pretty.
Cool you showed Pearl guramis, I don't think they get enough attention. Used to have them and loved them years ago. ANd then for a long time last year couldn't find them locally and just now did. Still quite small, but I love how big they get and also mostly swim slowly. I'm a bit annoyed with my super sporty mollies in the big tank :D
Hey! I was considering getting a par for my guppy tank, but I'm afraid they'll eat the fry or the shrimp or the dwarf crawfish. What's your opinion on that?
@@diogocosta3549 I have cory's and neon tetra's with my female. I'm not sure if I got lucky but she keeps the peace in the tank and hasn't murdered anyone. I've contemplated getting a second but she seems happy as does the tank so Im unsure what to do.
@@Mr_jz_12 I wonder if the addition of a male would change the dynamics in your tank or if they would do their own thing together. I really want a center piece fish but it seems like there's always a chance they might hurt the community :/ I love gouramis and rams though

I've got 4 WRESTLING HALFBEAKS (pygmy freshwater garfish) as my "centrepiece" in a 60L tank with 20 embers, 10 rummy and a few neon tetras, as well as some blue shrimp. The gars behave a lot like bettas, but aren't as aggressive with each other. They are even less afraid of people than bettas, and will swarm a finger, bumping into it. As top water fish, with small, weirdly positioned mouths, they don't seem to bother the shrimp at all.
I have a gold gourami and a red dwarf gourami in a tank with endlers and ember tetras. I got the gouramis hoping that they would help keep my endler population in check. I ended up with the two most gentle gouramis ever and now I have eleventy billion endlers.
1:30 - Right, a group of angels need a large tank, but I can imagine having one as a centerpiece in smaller tank. I keep 9 (used to be 10, but I lost one) in 714l (189 gal) which is 198cm long (6.49 ft). Everytime a pair breeds, they keep half of a tank to themselves as the angels go, the other fish may go little closer, but not much. Once I had two pairs lay eggs at once. Sadly those always calcify, but that doesn't stop fish from trying regularly. Also angels have sort of pack mentality, so males at least fight everyday, but nothing serious happens in a group of this size. A sort of centerpiece in that tank is a pair of Rainbow Sharkminnows. Other fish are also great choice. Currently I keep Dwarf gourami (1 male, 2 females) in one of my smaller tanks (160 l, 42 gal). I'd add dwarf Acaras to that list, as an alternative to Apistograma or Rams. Recently I got a group of Nanocara Anomala to the Angel tank and I can imagine having them as a centerpiece in something relatively small.
A bit surprised about your recommendation to keep one single angel fish. Yes, it’s behavior will be more suitable to a community tank when alone but it shouldn’t be alone. Angel fish live in groups or schools and should be kept as such.
@@bojohannesen4352That’s not what I was saying. I think Nick has a lot of great projects going on and is doing a great job with his channel. I do however disagree with the angelfish advice. Angels live in groups or schools and should not be kept alone. But these fish grow quite large and could snap up the occasional small tetra, as they do in nature. My advice would be to keep them in a 5+ group in larger aquaria and feed them well. Tetras (not too small), other cichlids and catfish are all fine as companions.
Good afternoon, First of all, some very interesting videos. I'm thinking about putting sponge filters in my new tanks. I have filters with Matrix, siporax... and you just sponge, everything cheaper and more practical. That's why I want to change and I have some doubts...
@nachoperinandominguez9018 hey there, i use sponge filters for every tank i have , i have 15, and since I started using them, I stopped having problems with filter malfunction and ammonia spikes, they tend to be the more stable and if you need more filtration you just add another one. I recommend them if you have a rack or a cumple o tanks close by and use a large air pump to be your air source. And use irrigation tubes to build the system. If you get sponge filters use some sort of valve to regulate the flow. Ask me anything if needed

I would like to see a picture of your tank. You can also try putting fine river sand over the coarse sand to prevent leaching into the water column. I have done that, had good results
I have a 2ft tank (20 litres), which I have a tonne of ramshorn snails and 4 blue shrimp and 2 yellow shrimp. I had neon tetras but they all died and I'm finding that seems to be the case with a lot of people I talk to. I was looking to get about 4 scarlet tetras as well, but was also thinking about 1 betta as my centrepiece. Are they safe with shrimp like the tetras are, or not really? BTW, love your videos and I've been following you for about a year now ever since I started thinking about getting a fish tank. Thanks for the great videos.
Neons are MUCH harder to keep alive than anything else I've kept so far. I have CRYSTAL clear water with zero ammonia/nitrite, but even with that I've lost 70% in a year. They are VERY susceptible to Neon Tetra Disease, something that can kill most types of fish in your tank if they eat an infected fish that has died. My understanding is that Cardinals are tougher generally and less susceptible. I've also had good success with ember tetras (zero losses out of 25) and rummynose tetras (zero losses - once you get them past transport stress - they do NOT travel well, even from the fish shop to home - I lost 2 of my 10 from that, but they were replaced for free). The rummies will definitely take a mid sized, or smaller shrimp occasionally - I've seen them do it. The embers are TINY so, are pretty safe. Pygmy corydorias are also great (but need a school) and should be shrimp safe (except for the tiniest ones). Bettas will DEFINITELY eat ALL your shrimp, even the full sized adults. They are larger fish with larger mouths, and actively hunt in and under things, for food like shrimp. I couldn't come up with any single "centrepiece" fish that is even remotely shrimp safe, so I went with 4 wrestling halfbeaks - topwater pygmy garfish. They could conceivably eat smaller shrimp, but their mouths aren't really set up for that sort of prey.
I’ve thought about adding a single Apistogramma to my community tank , but i have panda corys in there and I’ve heard they can be aggressive towards them specifically
