    This is really good, practical advice. What you're essentially telling people to do is an applied version of what Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists call "Exposure and Response Prevention." It's an incredibly effective technique for combating anxiety. Also, one can just take Propranolol. :)

    Great video Rob! Thanks so much for doing these--my students have been buzzing about your channel for quite a bit now. This video was particularly helpful, since I STILL deal with nerves! Keep up the good work! :)

    Concert Percussionist: plays matched grip on a tilted drum :/
    Marching Percussionist: plays traditional grip on a flat drum :/
    How typical

    Don't forget Alan Abel's classic advice! Nerves effect different muscles in different ways depending on size. The fight or flight response is great for track runners who use large muscle groups to give them more twitch and power, but it's bad for people who use small muscles groups because extra twitch and power will mess you up. So he would teach students to use more arm and wrist if they were shaking instead off relying so much on fingers (when possible) the arm is more stable and can help when the hands are shaking!

    Lol 6 weeks of daily mocks. Lucky. I have 1 week from getting the music to audition day! Strangely, I feel at ease knowing that all I can do is go for it and give it my best. Thanks for the video!

    This is good-- I'm also a drummer and used to occasionally experience nervous issues---- I have to tell you I then started going to Iyengar yoga classes and really got into it due to a very fine teacher--- All nervous issues whether performance related or otherwise disappeared---- I highly recommend it to anyone but especially performers of any kind.

    Fantastic video, seriously, it nails exactly what it should, it is the same on clavichord: shaking by stress, or by just having carried something, ... it ruins your performance. very well done, Rob !

    I shared this with some of my string students that are going on to become music majors. Substitute stick for bow, and the problem is the same.

    Nice video! As a new subscriber and wannabe percussionist I would like to know if you had any suggestion for a percussion bag where I could put my mallets, sticks, triangle, tambourine and other percussion stuff.

    If anyone out there is suffering from stage fright, butterflies in the stomach that lead to nervousness muscle tension etc., I have a cure that worked for me in one fell swoop.When I was about 14 years old I was on the way to a gig and had the butterflies which usually lead to tension nervousness, etc., I for some reason at the first butterfly took a quick and deep intake of breath in the manner I’d learned as a child for trombone studies, (I was going to a bass guitar gig), and the feeling was very relaxing; it felt like the adrenaline defused outward from my solar plexus/stomach area and out to my extremities in a very pleasant way which then left me with just a pure feeling of excitement without any kind of negative anticipation, anxiety or anxiousness.That was the very last day I had stage fright even before going out in performing in front of thousands of people, but the first hint of butterflies I automatically take that diaphragmatic breath and it transforms it into a pleasant anticipation of excitement of the gig. It is become so automatic that I probably don’t even have to do it anymore although I am looking forward to more of those big gigs.

    beta blockers works as well :P

    • @robknopperstudio
      @robknopperstudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Philipe Davis i used beta blockers. but here's my blanket disclaimer: never ever use beta blockers without going to a doctor first to get them prescribed... it can have negative effects. and try out some natural alternatives first like meditation, tai chi, yoga, and the ultimate nerve-buster: over preparation. www.robknopper.com/blog/2015/12/1/day-12-should-i-try-beta-blockers-for-audition-nerves
