Javed Akhtar Sahab has written the lyrics, using the words and phrases used 100 - 150 years ago, presented in the film. Indeed, a master lyricist. Majeed Akhtar 17th Oct, 2011 (Los Angeles)
While composing the songs for Sardari Begum, Vanraj Bhatia was ill. Hence, the talented Assistant Music Director Ashok Patki (Jingle King) composed and recorded all the songs. Only because of Sham Benegal's request and respect for senior Vanraj Bhatia, Ashok Patki agreed to have Bhatia's name as Music Director on the cassettes and not his.
Fond of film classical songs. Good looks likesome type of Malhar. If some one would please write the name of the singer. Too good a song.I think it i definitely Miyan ki malhar
Thanks. I am looking for a very old geet that they used to teach in Music classes in schools (in 1950's in India), "ghir ghir aye badarwa kare".. and in the "Antara" the tempo of the taal changes (it's faster) - words are "Koyal ki kook hook jiyara mein laage"..and then it goes back to (slow) ghir ghir aye badarwa kare. Can anyone help in the search?
The singer's name is not arti anarkalikar - it is Arti Ankalikar-Tikekar. She is one of India's top classical singers today.
this is superb. can't get tired of listening to this beautiful piece even thousand times. This is the real music. Thanks for uploading.
Lyrics with rough meaning:
ghir ghir aai badariyaa kaari
ghar ghar laayi laayi mahar matavaari
ghir ghir aai badariyaa kaari
घिर घिर आइ बदरिया कारि
घर घर लाइ लाइ मेहेर मतवारि
घिर घिर आइ बदरिया कारि
Swirling black clouds have gathered
Bringing grace and redemption to every home
kaali kaali koyal kuhuke
daali daali bhanvaraa guunje
san san aayen bhigi havaayen
ghan ghan kaale badaraa bole
कालि कालि कोयल कुहुके
डालि डालि भंवरा गूंजे
सन सन आयें भीगि हवायें
घन घन काले बदरा बोले
The Koyal (Cuckoo) is calling out,
On every branch bees are buzzing,
Moist winds are blowing,
The dark clouds are thundering
chham chham baaje barakhaa paayal
chham chham barase badari paagal
gin gin tin raah nihaaruun
kin kin naam tohe pukaaruun
छम छम बाजे बरखा पायल
छम छम बरसे बदरि पागल
गिन गिन तिन राह निहारूं
किन किन नाम तोहे पुकारूं
The rain is tinkling like melodious anklets
The cloud is raining down melodiously,
Counting every day I wait for thee yearningly
By what names do I call thee beseechingly.
भाई वाह!
What a masterful performance by Arati Tikekar and what poetry by the great Akhtar sahab.
Extra ordinary..... Kudos to Vanraj Bhatia ji for composing such Bandish..... Believe this is Miyan ki Malhar....
Beautiful song from a wonderful movie! This was the high culture of North India-- a secular culture contributed to equally by Hindus and Muslims.
Melodious ! An era of heritage of different cultures.
What music and so different and crisp voice texture. 👌👌👌

The singer is lovely! But sitting here missing Madam Noorjahan, I wonder how it would´ve sounded if she sang it? Sigh!
