John Frusciante adopts Jimi Hendrixs' playing style here. Using the modified bar chord that omits the deepest bass root note leaving the index finger on the 2 high strings (1st e & 2nd B). Which in turn frees up the hand for easier embellishments in the chords using the middle, ring and pinky fingers.
Although it is possible to play it with the standard full bar chord shapes as shown in the video @ 00:32 during the 1st phrase of the 1st Verse. I always suggest to my students to try and play it both ways. It just depends on what is more comphortable for you. But a versatile guitarist should try to be well versed in all the different kinds of techniques & play styles.
